Have you tried using the Quicklook feature built into the Finder?
Highlight a file or group of files and press .

I know what you tried to do, since there is a space between "press" and the subsequent period, but let me clarify it that you mean to press the space bar.

Yep.
I actually typed it -- it's there in my Sent folder. I put it in angle brackets, which some part of The Mail System decided to remove.

In fact, Barry, it is apparently *your* Mail server, because the copy I received back from the list still has the word "Space" and the angle brackets in it.

Maybe the system took it as an HTML command since it was in angle brackets?

I wondered that too but Jim's message came through to me intact
(Gmail/Safari webmail). In fact, it's common on these lists for people to
use this convention for keys such as the space bar without the crucial
word(s) disappearing.

I just tried that. The first image pops up, but not the others..then on top
there is an option to open in preview, and when I do, it goes to that black
back ground with one image in the center, and other images on the left side
in a vertical colum.

1. If I have a folder full of images, and I single-click on one then press the spacebar, I get a display of that image, which can also be enlarged to a degree (double-arrow in the upper right). But if I press the up- or down-arrow while the image is displayed, the previous or next image in the folder is displayed.
2. If I have a folder full of images, and I highlight several (or all) then press the spacebar, the first one is displayed, and left- or right-arrow will move the view to the previous or next highlighted image, and up- and down-arrows will move the view to the image before or after the highlighted group.
3. With regard to Preview, have you tried first running Preview, THEN choosing an image using its "File/Open..." menu item ( )?

Howdy.
Apple changed the default way the Preview opens and displays multiple
image choices.
I don't know when the change happened.
Check Preview > Preferences.
Click the General icon.
Then click the radio button Open groups of files in the same window.
It may do the trick.

Since Preview only opens a single image in 10.7.5, I am guessing the change came with 10.8.

Otto,
That sounds a good idea, but I have already reset the AE back to factory defaults in my efforts to communicate with it !!

Thanks, you pointed me in the right direction. HP does not have a new driver for this printer but based on their support pages I deleted and reinstalled the printer and it seems fine now.
As a bonus my HP 4L is now accepting print jobs from my laptop. I deleted and reinstalled, it quit after my last OS update.

My PC desktop died, and since I have 2 iPads and an iPhone, I have been looking at Macs. I bought the 27" iMac on Saturday. Overall, I love it.
But boy, what a learning curve! My first training class is this week.
In the meantime, though, I have 6 email accounts and would like to find a way to separate them when they come in, as I did in my PC and on my iPads and iPhone. Each account has a separate purpose and I find it too confusing to have everything in the same inbox.
Can anyone tell me how to separate them?
Also, I am on a few digests. When I replied to posts by my PC or iPads, no problem. But I don't seem to be able to reply from the Mac because it goes from a me.com, which the digests don't recognize. How can I correct that?
Thanks,
Carol Corley
