Thanks, all.
Since it seems to not be an OS issue, I think I won't reinstall.
Brent, I like your idea. I really don't want mail to come up first, anyway, since I almost always read mail on my iPad. Do your idea would eliminate this little annoyance whenever I power up the Mac.
Thanks again,
Carol

It happens occasionally with many ISP, if the server does not respond fast enough. But Yahoo, does seem to be having problems lately.

But what you said make me think that there is another cause to your problem.

Either take Mail.app out of the Startup Items or move it to the end of the list. It might be trying to connect before the network or internet before everything is ready.

Don't open Mail, until your iMac has completely started up.

I would like to find some software to convert a bunch of GFX graphics and GFX graphic libraries to some thing useable. These are graphics that were included in/with Print Artist and Print Explosion Deluxe apps. Free is good, but I'm willing to shell out some bucks to be able to convert these graphics. BTW Graphic Converter can't handle it. I've googled the subject, but I don't seem to find what I'm looking for. Any suggestions?

If I remember, Print Explosion was a library of vector, eps, tif, and pict files, etc. Have you tried to view the library in OSX Preview app? Maybe some of the images would be viewable that way. I'm not sure Preview will reveal any vector images. Adobe Illustrator will.

What type of file are you trying to convert to what type of file?

Preview cannot handle a GFX graphic. Preview can open vector graphics that are in eps format, however.

The file type I'm trying to open is GFX, and according to the Print Explosion Deluxe manual, "The vector graphics included with Print Explosion Deluxe are in GFX format…. Note that GFX graphics cannot be used in other applications."

As I mentioned, the graphics are GFX. I really don't care what format I convert them to - png, jpeg, tif, pdf.

If I were able to use my Print Explosion Deluxe (v3.0.2.8.) I could open and export them one at a time, but I wouldn't live long enough to open and export them all.

I've been looking into this out of curiosity, and it appears to me that you might have better luck doing the conversions on a Windows machine. I don't find any converters for Mac, but quite a few candidates for Windows.

Once converted, you could, of course, move the files to the Mac.

I'm curious - not being much of a techie myself - where did you find the: Home>Library> Prefs> com.apple. systemuiserver. plist
...so you could delete it? Thanks!

It's there, you must make Mountain Lion OSX reveal the User/Library folder. Later OSX HIDES this folder, even from searching with Spotlight. Even if you reveal it in Terminal, Spotlight will not search it. That's why I use FindAllFiles. Forget Spotlight.

Type this command into Terminal:

chflags nohidden ~/Library/

To make it invisible again:

chflags hidden ~/Library/

Hold down the Option key when you click Go to display the Library choice. Open that, then Preferences & look for com.apple.systemuiserver.plist.

My guess would be at Home>Library> Prefs> com.apple. systemuiserver. plist In other words, just where he said it was. If you are in 10.7 or 10.8, though, you have to hold down the option key and then go to the go menu in finder to get to your library.

Open a Finder window. In the sidebar on the left, click the icon with the "house" icon and your user name. That is your "home" folder. In that folder, find the Library folder and open it. In the Library find the Preferences folder. In the Preferences folder, scroll down to the one called "com.apple.systemuiserver.plist".

(and "systemuiserver," by the way, means "system user interface server")

I pulled out my old 2006 iMac from the garage to retrieve some files
and was pleased to see that its display was still in great, clear shape.

Is it possible to connect this old iMac to my current Mac Mini
and use it as a standard display?

below are its details - thanks!

24-inch
1920 X 1200
2.16 GHZ - intel core duo
GeForce 7300GT

On Windows I've used MaxiVista to good effect. They do have a Mac 'viewer'
app, which allows a Windows user to use Macs as additional displays, but
not for Mac to be the native 'user'.

It looks like Air Display might work for you. You can even use the iPad
and iPhone as additional displays, as well as other Macs and Windows PCs.

I've not tried it out yet, but I think I will.

Here's another discussion of this issue. I recall having set up just such an arrangement myself many years ago. It CAN be done. Just google it.

IMO, that would be a Rube Goldberg way to operate it. It could be done, not as a monitor, but as a computer screen sharing or connected to another computer.

The iMac's video port is output, not input.

You can operate both Macs, with the iMac in screen share mode, but there would be very noticeable latency and the image would be smaller. I am guessing, the iMac would be limited to 10.7.5, but you should be able to run whatever the Mac mini is capable of, since the iMac is just a viewer. I use screen sharing but only with the viewed Mac running a lower version OS X.

Mac's have a built-in ability to screen share. I have used it for headless (monitor-less) operation of a second Mac, and/or to work a second Mac that was just out of reach without moving.

To use screen sharing, open a new window, select the other Mac from the sidebar. You should have the option to connect to or screen share with the other Mac.
