Last weekend I was visiting my mother. She was sad to have lost a lot of important pictures from her iPhone. Later, she was happily surprised to find them all. She had found at the bottom of her sidebar in the Finder, a series of items that could be searched on the computer, one of which was Images. Clicking that gave her a list of every single image file on her computer, apparently, and all the lost pictures were found.

I was thrilled. I forget what operating system she was running. I think it is Snow Leopard. Here at home on my system running Lion, I don't have those search categories at the bottom of a Finder sidebar.

Does anyone know if they are available in Lion, and if so, how to get them to appear in the Sidebar?

I opened Preview. Selected User/View/Contact Sheet
It took awhile, but it's incredible what I have forgotten about over the years.

Can't do that in Preview 6.0.1 under OS 10.8.3. Is Apple removing functionality in more and more of its applications?

Pictures is one of the options for the sidebar in Finder Preferences.

OK, I found Contact Sheet this time, and it is apparently only selectable when the option to show Pictures in the sidebar has been chosen. On the other hand, Contact Sheet in Preview shows only items which are in the Pictures folder, which in my case includes only my iPhoto pictures and those saved there by some other applications. I have only about 1,400 pictures there, while I have almost 45,000 stored elsewhere, so I can't see those this way.

It's interesting the features we completely forget about once we're very familiar with MOST of the features and haven't changed settings in a long time.

I don't have a "confirm before closing" option.
Where else would i look?

Thanks!

In the absence of "confirm before closing," you can use History >
"Reopen All Windows from Last Session" to get back everything you've
accidentally just closed when you quit the program.

Hope that helps.

Does that mean that there's no "prevention" to closing all windows by mistake?
Thanks for sharing this. This also helps a lot!

That is the case if you haven't got the preference set, as you can in older
versions of Safari, like mine. Unfortunately, Apple have a habit of
removing options for no good reason and this is one. The History > Reopen
All option is something I use habitually.

I seem to remember that the last time I used IE, there was no such option:
you had to remember to save all tabs/windows *before* closing each time. I
hope that's been improved since then.

When I bought my mac I was told that I no longer needed virus protection and malware protection because Mac viruses are very rare.

I had a friend that sent me a link today for Trend Micro malware protection.

Is this needed?

I've used my Macs for almost ten years without virus protection & have never had a problem. You might search the archives for this group to read a number of very informative recent posts on the subject. Just go to the group homepage, click on messages & use the search term "virus protection".

I have owned a Mac since they were invented in the 1980s. I was also one of the first people in the UK to get a virus on my PC (in the late nineties, I think). It came from London University. The only time that viruses were an issue is when they were attached to Word files, due to Microsoft's sloppy programming, and they could be transferred from a PC to a Mac. This apparently no longer happens.

Probably not. I've been using Macs without virus protecting since 1986, and have never had a problem. IMO, it a waste of money and time to have virus protection for a Mac.
