I have not needed this since OS 8 and 9 and used ARA, but now have a need to access my work LAN from my home LAN and vice versa.
The work LAN is mixed Mac OS, 10.5. 10.6 and 10.7 plus one Win XP.
The Home LAN Is mixed Mac OS 10.5, 10.6 and 10.8 no Windows except on VMs,
I would like to be able to transfer files as well as share desktops and manipulate programs on the remote Macs.
What commercial and open source software will allow me to do this? Where is a good recipe for setting it up. Security is a big issue and needs to be HIPPA compliant.
Thanks,
BillB.

When security is an issue, it is not so straight-forward. Your network
group is going to need to select a VPN server and then you will need a
compatible VPN client. Cisco seems to be one of the more popular VPN
solutions. But getting ballpark prices is nearly impossible, you need to
call Cisco to obtain a quote for your particular situation.

TeamViewer.com works great in these situations.

1. In burning a playlist to CD, as an audio CD, I have not yet found a way to equalize the volume from track to track. I've made sure 'Sound Check' is selected and even adjusted track volumes in Get Info>Options, but with no luck. Is there a workaround to this problem?
2. In iTunes on my Mac I can select and play internet radio stations, but I haven't found a way to do so from iTunes on my iPhone 4s. Is it possible to do this?
Thanks for any suggestions.

I don't think that iTunes radio is available on the iPhone, but there are a number of free apps available for streaming radio.

For all of 2 days I've been using TuneIn. So far so good. It's free and you can purchase an advert-free version.

Thanks Dave. It seems to work quite well, and I plan to purchase the "Pro" version. Unfortunately, when I go to the App Store to get it, the button already says "Open," rather than showing a price. When I click on "Open" what opens is the free version! I've sent an email to the publisher to see what's happening.

Does anyone use Aperture? And are you happy with it? Do you wish you bought something different?
I am fairly new to Mac and love the way iPhoto works -- it is so logical! I like it better than any photo organizing program i used on my PC. But I would like to get a program that would let me do some editing.
Aperture was recommended to me at the Apple store, but it isn't even listed in the Top 10 photo programs for a Mac.
Thoughts?
Thanks,
Carol

You can do limited editing in iPhoto. Have you tried that and found it
doesn't do enough?
You can also set up iPhoto to use another app for editing, such as
Photoshop Elements, passing control back to iPhoto when you've finished.

I just acquired a 4 TB hard disk. As I was experimenting with my new "toy"
I discovered something interesting. If I used a large partition size (3 TB
or more) the cluster size (allocation block size) increased from 4 KB to 8
KB (HFS+.} So, comparing a 4 TB partition to a 2 TB partition, you can have
larger files, but the maximum number of files will be the same. If I take
that a step further and compare a 3 TB partition to a 2 TB partition, you
could theoretically store more small files on a 2 TB partition.
My thinking now; stick to 2 TB or smaller partitions unless you need really
large file sizes because there is more wasted space with an 8K allocation
block size than with 4K.
Anyone else care to chime in with their thoughts? (Opinions always
welcomed.)
