Howdy.

A correction, Brent, if I may.

BootCamp is a little application provided as part of the Mac OS X
system. BootCamp lets you partition your hard drive into the already
present Macintosh partition and a new and separate Windows partition.
You can then install Windows OS and Windows programs like MS OFfice for
Windows, etc. This is not virtual.

BootCamp is an either/or boot. Boot in normal Mac OS OR boot in a
normal Windows hardware based OS.

Parallals and Fusion and other similar programs provide a "virtual"
environment where you can install your own Windows OS, MS Office for
Windows, etc. You can then boot in the normal Macintosh manner but
then can run Excel for Windows as a virtual program.

With a virtual machine you an run Mac OS and Windows OS at the same
time and even copy/paste text from one to the other. The drawback is a
bit of a loss in speed for programs running in the virtual environment.

Turn off Java (but *not* JavaScript) in your browser:
In Safari, go to:
Safari menu --> Preferences --> Security --> uncheck Enable Java

Make sure that you have installed all of the Security Updates sent to you by Apple.

Then you should be good.

When printing an image in Preview the default Scale size is other than 100 percent and the default value cannot be easily changed.

You *can* change the defaults using Terminal:

(Scroll down to the 9th reply.)

I have Snow Leopard and I don't know what other versions of OS X this applies to.

Cheers,
Dave

I suspected the Canon driver for this networked (LAN) Pixma MP970 multifunction inkjet of being corrupt or otherwise buggy so I downloaded and installed the current one from the Canon support site. This was, apparently, a mistake.

Using the System Preferences > Print & Fax pane I deleted the current printer and set it up.

I used the Default icon and the printer showed up as a bonjour device. I selected the printer and clicked on the "Print Using" menu and selected the "Canon MP970 series" selection, and clicked the Add button.

The new device shows up in the list of Printers but the icon is that of a scanner. When I print I can click on that icon and all the features and choices of a printer are there and the printer does print.

How can I get back the printer icon?

A bonus question: are there CUPS drivers available for this printer? What is involved in installing those drivers?

Thanks,
Dave
