> I'm considering a Time Capsule for my Time Machine backups. I already have a wi-fi router from Comcast that handle my Internet access, my question is, once I setup the Time Capule for my Time Machine backup and and I switch over to my wi-fi connction for Internet access does the wi-fi from the Time Capsule still keep the connection active to do the backup. Right now, I am using a USB drive for my Time Machine backups, I have too many devices on my USB hub.

I have a 1TB Time Capsule that I don't use:

First, because I have a perfectly good Wifi network generated by my Airport Base Station.

Secondly, because making backups over the Wifi connection was so tediously slow I ended up never using it, and simply connected the TC by ethernet.

And thirdly, because I decided simply using a separate Firewire 800 hard drive was easier.

I feel that the Time Capsule is a reasonable solution for someone who (a) has no other Wifi source at present, and (b) has only small backup needs (because of the Wifi backup speed). And with an iMac (as compared to a Macbook) there is even less reason to use a Wifi-connected drive rather than a continuously-wired-connection drive.

If you are interested in the TC I no longer use, contact me off-list, and we can work out a price.

Just so I understand, when you say the backups were slow, I thought they made in the background? Did they otherwise slow down your system?

Also, are your backups just as slow if you connect the Time Capsule via Ethernet?

They didn't seem to slow the computer much, it just took, often, most of an hour to perform the hourly backup, even after I blocked it from backing up most of the other partitions connected to the computer, and huge files like Fusion virtual hard drives.

(For reference, Firewire 800 is theoretically capable of transferring 100 megabytes per second -- the equivalent of 6 gigabytes per minute, or 360 GB in an hour. Real-world speeds, of course, are slower.)

> Also, are your backups just as slow if you connect the Time Capsule via Ethernet?

I found (gigabit) ethernet backups to the TC to be faster than Wifi, but I can no longer tell you how *much* faster.

Epson I feel are better HP or Canon.
It is all I've owned for the last 8 years in the way of inkjet.
just stay away from the $99 or less ones. (any brand)
The
Epson WorkForce 845 All-in-One Printer
is great but the

Epson WorkForce Pro WP-4530 All-in-One Printer
is very reasonable with good ink costs.
And works great with you Mac products.

Hello,

I called Yahoo customer service because I use their portfolios to keep track of
my stock account. The site was malfunctioning and the total was incorrect and I
wanted to know how to erase it and put the correct total in.

My call was answered by a man with an Indian accent who said his name was Sean
Jackson. He said he would help me, but first he said I had to give him access to
my computer. He sent me some numbers which he had me read to him and then he
took control of my computer.

Instead of helping me with this problem, he immediately told me that unknown
people had been attempting to access my computer and they were tracking
everything I do. He sent me a whole page of the attempts. They started on April
17 and continued including his
access on April 23.
His entries looked like this:
"4/23/13 11:31:16 AM ...,TeamVieverQ5 [488] Tue Apr 23 11:31:16
unknown001ff3ce276c,att.net TeamViewer_DesktopQS [485} <Error>:
kCGErrorIllegalArgument: CGXGetWorkspaceWindowList: NULL pointer"

The numbers and letters were very small and I had to guess at some of the
letters. The above line was repeated numerous times on the list he sent me.

He wanted to sell me a $500 3 year warranty from a company named GCompTech which
he said was approved by Apple. I called my local Apple store and they had never
heard of it. Has anyone there heard of it?

My other questions are:
What is this all about?
Does this indicate a compromise of my computer?
If so, what should I do?
Is there a way I can access the kind of information he sent
and which I copied one line of above? I mean is there any way I can check to see
if anyone is trying to access my computer?

I called the local Apple store and they
told me to bring my computer in but it is too heavy for me to attempt to get it
into a car.

Would appreciate any help. I am thinking of removing the system and installing a
different one. Does anybody think this would help?

Will appreciate any suggestions.

You have now given a stranger access to your computer. Yes, I would be
very frightened. Get a friend or neighbor or pay someone to help you
get it to a reputable repair shop. Do not use it until you do.

The first thing I would do is to call my broker and put a lock on everything you have there.

I would contact Yahoo in writing and let them know. If Yahoo has a Facebook
account (which is weird, but who knows), I would post it there, too.

This scenario sounds really fishy to me. How can anyone owning stock, control the stock through Yahoo? A stock broker provides a web interface. That's why you use a broker to buy stock. You don't buy stock through Yahoo. You can watch stock with a twenty minute delay, if that's your preference.

I think someone needs to watch more tv, call their broker and leave computers alone.

For anyone who may run into this issue, I dropped my iPhone 3Gs a few weeks ago and it's wifi reception went away almost completely. I had to stand next to the modem/router in order to get any reception.

I finally resolved to dis/reassemble to see if that would rectify the problem and did my due diligence first by searching the topic.

It turns out that some have fixed the issue by giving a good smack to the phone (memories of tube-TV days, for those old enough to remember "fixing" one of those...).

Holding the phone face-up by the lower half (thumb on top method), I brought the back of the phone down smartly to meet the heel of my other hand (a bit too smartly if you ask that hand...)

Wifi reception is restored for now. This means that it was probably a connection issue and, therefore, may recur.

But for now the phone is as it was, working fine.

FYI.

Cheers,
Dave

I have a MacBook Pro Retina and I want something to carry it in with
plenty of room for other goodies: magazines, maybe some puches and
pockets for cables, phone, Kindles, iPad.

Do any of you have a favorite case (I don't like backpacks i prefer
more briefcase style but I might be swayed) that is tough and fits the
MacBook well with room for more stuff I always have a lot of stuff to
carry on my 1.5 hour commute on train and subway.

Tomorrow is pay day so I wanted to order a case this weekend or no
later than Monday night.

I would look at Waterfield Designs website, and after perusing, phone them and discuss *exactly* what you would want to carry.

For example, later this year I will be asking them about a "messenger bag" w/shoulder strap for a iPad4 in an Apple SmartCase, *plus* a 15" laptop, and possibly some accessory space.

They make extremely high quality products, and entirely in the USA:

I've had good luck with a bag made locally here in Seattle:
http://www.brenthaven.com/. It's about 16 years old and has taken a
beating with little or no noticeable wear. The one I have is not
specific to Macs, but could easily accommodate one with accessories.

Thanks Jim I will look at their website. I know your recommendations are
thoughtful and researched so I have high hopes. Anyone else want to pipe in?

Thanks again Jim! I have been taking my iPad while commuting but am
resolving 1-2 weeks per month to take the MacBook Pro so I can get some
book, magazine article, and fiction writing done.
