Apple building mysterious new tactical data center in North Carolina

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 05:15 PM PDT

Apple is moving forward with plans to build a new, smaller data center next to the existing $1 billion iCloud facility in Maiden, North Carolina. The company has just filed for building permits, a story today revealed.

The upcoming 20,000 square feet facility will have tight security measures, such as “man trap” security doors and chain-link security fence, and will be t-boned to the existing iCloud facility. Official documents refer to it as the ‘tactical’ data center, whatever that’s supposed to mean…(...)

Carriers reportedly testing Nano SIM cards in partnership with Apple

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 04:02 PM PDT

We told you earlier in the week that European wireless carriers were stockpiling Nano SIM cards in the hope that the next iPhone will incorporate the newly ratified technology which enables thinner devices due to a 40 percent smaller footprint versus the Micro SIM standard.

As you know, Apple’s Nano SIM proposal was chosen last month by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute as the industry standard, following weeks of bickering between Apple on one side and Nokia, Motorola and Research In Motion on the other.

A new report from this morning has it that Apple is supplying its carrier partners with Nano SIM adapters so they could test Nano SIMs on existing devices before the next iPhone arrives in October…(...)

The ChargeCard: an iPhone charger that fits in your wallet

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 02:39 PM PDT

This is pretty cool: inventors Noah Dentzel and Adam Miller have finally come up with a solution to the problem of having to lug around a spare iPhone cable.

The ChargeCard works just like your average 30-pin USB cable — it will charge your device and transfer data — but it’s compact enough to fit in your wallet…(...)

Drop test: iPad vs. Nexus 7

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 01:47 PM PDT

Google unveiled the Nexus 7 last month to much fanfare. And although its price and screen size don’t really line up with the latest iPad, many reviewers are still using Apple’s tablet as a point of reference.

You’ve probably already seen all of the speed and performance comparisons between the two slates, but what about durability? That’s right it’s drop test time. Nexus 7 versus the iPad, round one, fight!(...)

Banners Plus: another growl inspired notification tweak for the iPad

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 01:16 PM PDT

Yesterday we brought you a preview of NotiPad, an upcoming jailbreak tweak that enables Growl inspired notifications on the iPad. Although NotiPad looks promising, it wasn’t without a few quirks in my testing, and it will also cost $1.00.

Another developer, undoubtedly inspired by what he saw, has created a new tweak that mimics many of the functions present in NotiPad, and he will be releasing his tweak for free. He’s calling his tweak Banners+, and we’ve taken it for a spin on video…(...)

How to add a traditional refresh button to Google Chrome

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 12:55 PM PDT

The way Google Chrome for iOS handles its refresh/stop functionality is a bit unorthodox. You have to first open a menu, and then tap the refresh or stop button to perform the action.

While it may seem like a small deal, I’ve found that this extra step is a bit frustrating in real world usage. Thankfully, as you may have guessed, the jailbreak community has responded with an answer.

EasyRefresh for Chrome is that answer — it’s a jailbreak tweak that adds a traditional refresh button to Google Chrome for iOS…(...)

First screenshots of Firefox OS arrive

Posted: 19 Jul 2012 10:30 AM PDT

Mozilla’s Firefox OS may be driven by HTML5 but it sure looks a lot like an unusual cross between iOS and Android. It’s already got strong support from carriers and now the first screenshots depicting the user interface and various system apps have surfaced.

The interface looks distinct enough to stand on its own, even though Mozilla clearly borrowed some of the best design practices from iOS and Android…(...)
