Apple granted patent for smaller charging port

Posted: 18 Jul 2012 05:44 PM PDT

Rumors that Apple has been looking to trim the size of the dock connector in future iOS products started back in February of this year. It’s believed that the company is making the change in an effort to save space inside of its devices.

We’ve since seen the smaller dock connector on a number of “leaked” next-gen iPhone components, cases and more. And if that wasn’t enough to convince you that the change is coming, check out this newly-granted patent…(...)

After more than 15 years, Cupertino finally secures Apple.co.uk

Posted: 18 Jul 2012 05:17 PM PDT

Apple has finally managed to wrestle the apple.co.uk domain away from a U.K.-based design shop, which has been a registrant for the domain for more than fifteen years.

Records show that the Apple.co.uk domain name was in possession of an illustration agency called Apple Illustration. It obviously relinquished ownership as Apple now owns Apple.co.uk.

A simple WHOIS lookup reveals the domain’s new registrant: Apple, Inc., based at 1 Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California. As a result of this change, Apple.co.uk now finally redirects to Apple’s UK home page and Apple Illustration has moved to a new home at AppleAgency.co.uk…(...)

There’s been a lot of talk over the past few days regarding AT&T and the new FaceTime over cellular feature in  iOS 6. The carrier has yet to deny accusations that it will charge customers extra for Apple’s video calling service.

But it looks like Sprint customers can rest easy. A spokesperson for the company has just confirmed that it has no intentions of charging their subscribers extra for the new FaceTime feature…(...)

Posted: 18 Jul 2012 04:45 PM PDT

Apple’s contract assembler Foxcon, also known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Company, is planning a brand spanking new manufacturing facility in Indonesia said to be worth one billion dollars. It will assumably help Foxconn churn out more iPhones, iPads and iPods.

The new plant will come in addition to Foxconn’s manufacturing sites in China’s Chengdu province and Brazil, where some of iPad and iPhone production could move in the future. The Indonesia facility will create approximately one million new jobs in the region where the average monthly wage is a hundred bucks a month…(...)

Here’s the original iPad prototype next to an iPad 2

Posted: 18 Jul 2012 03:40 PM PDT

Earlier today, leaked images of the original iPad prototype started making their way around the internet. The ’035 mockups’ depicted a significantly larger tablet that Apple is believed to have worked on between 2002 and 2004.

The photos included several fuzzy, black and white snapshots of the prototype, and were obviously several years old. But this afternoon, new pictures of the tablet have surfaced, showing how big it is compared to newer iPads…(...)

Is Apple stepping up fight against IAP exploit with UDIDs?

Posted: 18 Jul 2012 03:31 PM PDT

A flaw in the in-app purchasing mechanism in iOS that a Russian hacker exposed last week by leveraging a proxy server which enabled $30,000+ in sales of extra content may soon become a thing of the past as Apple is reportedly looking to contain the exploit by issuing a unique identifier in validation receipts.

This identifier apparently includes the Unique Device Identifier (UDID) for the device making the in-app purchase. The development is indicative remembering that the company recently began rejecting third-party apps over use of UDIDs. Apple was also thought to be readying tools for developers to let apps figure out users without resorting to UDIDs…(...)

Verizon lights up 4G LTE in 33 new markets

Posted: 18 Jul 2012 02:46 PM PDT

Boy, does Verizon Wireless know how to spoil AT&T’s unveiling of shared data plans from this morning. The Big Red carrier made a point by saying it now has more high-speed Long Term Evolution (LTE) coverage in the U.S. than all of its rivals combined.

In addition, the company announced today it’s flipping the switch on 4G LTE in 33 new markets. Verizon’s LTE is now in a total of 337 markets and the carrier is on track to cover more than 400 markets by the year’s end. Plus, it is broadening the coverage in the existing 32 markets which already have its 4G LTE…(...)

The iPhone 4S emits 3 times the radiation as Galaxy S III

Posted: 18 Jul 2012 01:33 PM PDT

Ever since Samsung unveiled its new Galaxy S III earlier this year, we’ve seen the handset compared to the iPhone 4S in a number of different ways, including specs, voice control features, and even durability.

But up until now, we’ve yet to see a comparison like this. A new report is out this week claiming that Apple’s latest smartphone has been found to emit 3 times more radiation than Samsung’s S III handset…(...)

How to download files with Google Chrome on iOS

Posted: 18 Jul 2012 12:39 PM PDT

Just a few minutes ago, a new tweak entitled Chrome Download Enabler appeared on Cydia. Excited about the prospect of finally being able to download files via the Google Chrome Browser on iOS, I quickly paid the somewhat steep $2.00 asking fare, and jumped in.

What did I find? Chrome Download Enabler works well, allowing you to download files that you ordinarily wouldn’t be able to in Google Chrome. It’s not pretty like Safari Download Manager, but as you’ll see in the following video walkthrough, it does get the job done…(...)
