Howdy.
Drobo has announced a new Drobo 5D external drive case to start
shipping September 30, 2012.
It's a bit pricey but for mega storage and speed this is an interesting
device!
Drobo 5D. External drive case:
five SATA HDs,
one mSATA SSD drive,
two Thunderbolt ports,
one USB 3 port,
hot swappable drives,
includes a sort of UPS battery that in case of power outage will take
over and finish writing data to storage before shutting down.
Wow!

I surely don't understand iCloud in Mountain Lion. To wit: I open TextEdit
for the first time (in ML) and what appears first is not a blank page ready
to type on, as in the past, but a dialog box of iCloud. It explains that
documents can be drug to the box and saved in iCloud. So, out of curiosity,
i tried that. Instead of actually moving a document from my hard drive to
iCloud, I wanted to move a *copy *of the document, the same concept (in my
mind) as Time Machine. I would have a document on my hard drive* and* in
the Cloud. Nope! The iCloud dialog box wouldn't let me move a *copy* of the
document to the cloud, only the *original*. I didn't want to do that.
After dragging and dropping *one* document from the Finder to iCloud, just
to see what happened, under the document it showed "Waiting" for a bit then
the title of the document appeared. The document had moved from my hard
drive. I assumed this meant it was stored in iCloud. So, in Safari, I log
in to iCloud and look at what's in my iCloud. The document is not there.
There's not even a heading for documents there. And yes, in the System
Preference iCloud pane I have 'Documents & Data' checked.
Would the knowledgable luminaries of this forum be so kind as to explain
what I'm missing in this scenario? More elucidation very much appreciated.
Thanks....Jim

What have you already read about learning/using/understanding OS 10.8 ?

Thanks to all for your comments. I've been reading a lot about Mountain
Lion, but didn't have a good understanding of how iCloud works till I read
this article in Ars Technica (and I just now read it):
http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/07/os-x-10-8/12/#icloud-and-you
The way iCloud is designed will be helpful to many people, but not for me.
I have been using, and really like, Dropbox. This works for me in the way I
store and use documents. I like to store documents in my Documents folder
on my hard drive. Certain documents I also copy and save in Drobox so they
will be accessible to me on any device I use. I don't store anything in
Dropbox of a confidential nature.
Thanks again......Jim

I just got my new iMac with Lion and Safari v5.1.7. I seems that now when I download a file I get a blank (dark) window, a progress bar runs through the displayed download address and when that finishes I'm left with the blank window. I can't find the download anywhere, either via spotlight or a manual search of the usual locations. Safari is set to use my desktop as a location for downloads. 'Remove Download List Items' is set to 'Manually.'
But my download is not on the desktop, nor in the Downloads folder, nor does it show up in Spotlight. Where can it be? Did it ever arrive?
BTW, the new (to me, at least) version of Spotlight is next to useless. Mousing over a filename listed in a search no longer reveals a location for the file, which is what I hope to have revealed by doing the search. Why did they change that?
Forgive me. I guess I'm getting frustrated it's been a long day. Help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
..............Mike

When you are downloading a file, or have recently downloaded one, a "download icon" appears in Safari at the right edge of the toolbar; click on this, and a download window opens.
To the right of the filename there should be a small magnifying glass icon; click that and Finder should open a window with the download file highlighted.

I stumbled upon that just before getting your response, Jim, but the most recent download in that list (there are 20) is from June 20 of this year, a month before I got the iMac, and the oldest is from 2010. Nothing recent, maybe because I've used Speed Download for some time. Out of concern that might be causing this D/L issue I deinstalled it several days ago, but nothing appears to have changed regarding downloads since then.

The purpose of this list is to help people, not to tell them to Google their question.
Last Pass is a Safari Extension. Go to Safari Preferences->Extensions->Click on Last Pass and press Uninstall.

In my opinion my reply was an answer to the question, as it provided them with the means to get the information they needed.

Last night I was helping my wife fill out a personal info form on her MacBook Pro for an upcoming trip. I needed something from the calendar, and I forgot that I've not yet converted her from iCal to BusyCal (and that I wasn't working on my own laptop). Looking at the Dock, I didn't SEE BusyCal, so I tried <Command-Spacebar>, discovering to my horror that Spotlight couldn't find it either!
Before I realized my own stupidity, I popped up the Applications Folder from the Dock, and discovered that one of the first items (I have it set to display an alphabetical list) was... an Applications Folder! So, I opened a new root Finder window (I know, it's not REALLY root level), and sure enough, inside the "Applications" Folder there's an"Applications" Folder, and inside THAT "Applications" Folder there's an"Applications" Folder, and inside THAT "Applications" Folder there's an"Applications" Folder, and (you get the idea).
At first glance, it appears that each nested version of the Folder is a copy of the one above it in the hierarchy, but can I make sure that the actual pkg or app for some program isn't one or more levels deep in this.
My first thought is to make a screen capture of the top level Applications Folder, move the first iteration of the nested copies to the DeskTop, then look at the top level Applications Folder again and see if anything (other than the folder nest I've moved out) is missing.
A second check could be to compare the size of the Applications Folder (top level) before and after the move to desktop of its first nested copy. My guess is it should decrease a bit because all those pointers have to consume SOME disk space. Of course, that leads to a question: how many iterations of this should the original creation of the "nest" spawn?
Anyone have other ideas? Perhaps I should ask Disk Utility to see if it discovers any other oddities, but my guess is that this was created by user error rather than by directory corruption.
Thanks so much,

Howdy.
Here is a web site that has a list of Lion and Mountain Lion
applications and shows which are compatible with Lion and Mountain Lion.
<http://roaringapps.com/apps:table >
There are other similar web sites with similar info.
If you find one that you think is good, please post a quick link for
group members to use.
