Thank you both for your advice. I have 3 different sets of OSX
installation discs, and only the OSX 10.5.4 Leopard disk gives me
anything at all, which is the black screen with writing on it. The
other 3, one a DVD for OSX Tiger, and 2 sets of CDs for earlier
versions, do nothing at all. I hold down the C key for a long time, and
finally the apple appears and it tries to boot from the hard drive.
Then the message appears telling me to hold down the power button and
reboot the machine.
I am coming to the conclusion that this problem is indeed a defective
logic board.
By the way, the optical drive reads the DVD and CDs just fine when I
boot up with the old hard drive and insert them while the system is
running, so I am fairly certain the optical drive is OK.

I've tried a few things to correct the oddity on my wife's computer. Disk Utility found no errors on her boot drive. DiskWarrior 4.4 found a few flags set incorrectly, but when I replaced her directory with a rebuilt directory, there was still an "Applications" Folder insider her "Applications" folder. I have uploaded a screenshot as "Recursive App Folder.png" to the group's file section; it illustrates the problem. Using Column View, at the far left is the "Applications" icon in the "Favorites" column, with its distinct Graphic to the left of its name. In the first column to the right are current versions of apps, plus another "Applications" folder (no graphic on the folder image). Next column right is an "Applications" alias (that DOES have the graphic on the folder icon, as well as many older apps not in the top level folder, as well as apps that have versions older than the apps in the folder one level up.
Next column to the right the list of current apps is repeated and there's another "real" "Applications" folder (again, no graphic on the folder image). Every time I create a new column by clicking on the most extreme right "Applications" folder or alias, the pattern continues.
I'm thinking now that at some point, an install in place of an updated version of Mac OS must somehow have left the previous "Applications" folder in place inside the new applications folder.
Another tidbit: if I do a Spotlight Search, typing the filename of any of the apps that are present in older and newer versions, the newer version is listed as being in "CLR MacBook Pro Lion" (the volume name); the older version is listed as being in "Applications"
So, I'm thinking that I could just move the nested "Applications" folder to the desktop and reboot and see what happens. Anyone have better ideas?

Isn't that only an Alias of the Mail Application folder? Just delete it. You won't delete any contents deleting an Alias. jr

Isn't that only an Alias of an Application folder? You can delete an Alias and no content will be deleted, just the Alias.

No, because the contents of the first "nested" Application folder are not exactly the same as the one above it in the hierarchy. When I've tried dragging the alias to the Desktop, it's immediately replicated in its prior position.

Thank you for the information, just what I wanted to know. I was wondering if I scan and clean with "Cleanmymac" would I keep the caches down to a good level or do I need to go to the Systems file to clean them properly?

Stop! Do not download and use CleanMyMac. Download Onyx. It is free and will do the same.

Howdy.
I have a first generation MacPro which doesn't qualify for Mountain
Lion install.
However, there is now information going about, and some articles, that
upgrading the video card in a MacPro may <possibly> make it qualify and
allow for the installation of Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion.
Here's one article from MNN:
<http://www.macnn.com/articles/12/07/12/graphic.chipsets.limits.some.fairly.recent.models/ >
And here's one sentence from this article;
"As a rule of thumb, if a user's machine is using an Nvidia GeForce
9400M or better, it is likely to work with Mountain Lion."
I intend to do some more research on this and would get a newer video
card if it would allow for Mountain Lion to be installed.
I think that the MacPros seem to have some problems with video cards
becoming defective. I've had this experience with a 2nd and faster
video card that became defective and have know several other MacPro
tower owners with similar experiences.

Hi Otto
Yes , I meant double click.
However, it is solved now. Apparently when I upgraded to ML the
double-click speed was changed to fast.
I found out that when I clicked 8 or 10 times very fast the file would open.
Changed the double-click speed back to what it was before and everything is
OK now.

Howdy
You wouldn't be asked for a password when opening a Numbers document unless you had used the password feature to make it a secure document.
I haven't had a password problem with numbers. However, I've only experimented with the feature. Could it be an issue related to moving the document to a different computer? Or some kind of Auto Save problem? I'm a bit nervous about Auto Save in any case.

I did set up a password and it did work, once.
Tried several times with negative results, simply opened without putting in the password.
Thanks.

Howdy.
Try <http://gyazsquare.com/gyazmail/ >
Before buying GyazMail check it out carefully. I use it for the good filters/rules, reliability, and because it doesn't keep mail in a big database but in separate folders.
But note that it can't compose messages in HTML format (but can display incoming messages in HTML), and lacks some of the good features found in Apple's Mail program.
