Simple chart makes the case for mini iPad

Posted: 22 Jul 2012 05:21 PM PDT

Really, why should Apple make the iPad mini other than what Bloomberg, WSJ and NYT heard? Per conventional wisdom, Cupertino needs to move fast now Google’s Nexus 7 is picking up steam (the $249 16GB model is sold out). Some people reckon Apple must launch a smaller iPad in order  to keep folks locked inside its ecosystem and away from Google’s.

Others reason the shrunken iPad that fits inside women’s purses could easily become a new fashion statement (and they’re probably right). And we can fairly safe assume that Santa would bring $199 mini iPads to lots of kids this Christmas (naughty ones will get a Kindle Fire).

But as with all consumer electronics, including Apple’s shiny gadgets, the case for iPad mini boils down to sales projections, spreadsheets and charts. It just so happens that I’ve stumbled upon an awesome chart which illustrates unambiguously why the iPad mini is a missing link in Apple’s iOS portfolio…(...)

On Wired cover: how Steve Jobs’ management style affects industry leaders

Posted: 22 Jul 2012 04:26 PM PDT

Wired in its August issue runs an interesting (albeit premature?) cover story about Apple’s late co-founder titled Am I Steve Jobs which seeks to explore how the mercurial CEO’s unconventional management style has affected and continues to inspire industry executives. The feature mostly draws from the authorized bio book by Walter Isaacson, but is also spiced up with interviews from today’s business and tech leaders…(...)

Dashboard X 2.0 makes adding widgets to your Home screen even easier

Posted: 22 Jul 2012 03:15 PM PDT

The original Dashboard X was a fairly monumental tweak for jailbroken iOS devices, because it brought true widgets to the iPhone and iPad’s Home screen.

Dashboard X 2.0, the follow up to the hit release, is aiming to build on all of the things the original Dashboard X did well, while fixing the things it didn’t do so well.

This time around you can resize widgets using pinch gestures, and you can position widgets on both portrait and landscape orientations independently of one another.

Simply put, this is an awesome follow up to an already great jailbreak tweak. Check inside for the full video walkthrough…(...)

Samsung surpasses 10 million Galaxy S III shipments in 55 days

Posted: 22 Jul 2012 01:53 PM PDT

A month ago Samsung publicly set a target for Galaxy S III shipments at ten million units by the end of July. Today, the company announced it hit that milestone. A successor to the Galaxy S II, by and large the most popular Android handset, the Galaxy S III was unveiled at a London event on May 29, 55 days ago. A month later it arrived at U.S. shores.

In the two weeks following the London unveiling, the S III received more than nine million pre-orders from a hundred carriers, making it the fastest-selling gadget in history.

For comparison, the iPhone 4S sold four million units during its launch weekend (including pre-orders) and the Galaxy S II took five months to hit ten million shipments…(...)

ITC dismisses Kodak’s patent case against Apple

Posted: 22 Jul 2012 08:00 AM PDT

In its heyday, Kodak controlled more than 90% of the US film market, and 85% of all camera sales. But a lot can change in 35 years, and unfortunately, time has not been kind to the Rochester, New York company.

Kodak is currently in the process of filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and looking to sell off its patent portfolio in hopes to restructure its business. But as it turns out, those patents may not be worth as much as it thinks they are…(...)

Parts vendor offering new permanent unlock service for AT&T iPhones

Posted: 22 Jul 2012 06:00 AM PDT

Apple N Berry is an online parts vendor that also deals in iPhone unlock solutions. We actually point to the store quite often when mentioning GEVEY Ultra products — they usually have them.

But now it’s offering something much different than interposers. The vendor has just launched a new IMEI unlock service that, it promises, will permanently unlock all AT&T iPhone models…(...)
