Hi group! I am a real newbie but I love my mac! I have a mini mac with tiger on it I want to upgrade not sure to what, and do I do this at home or do I take it to my mac guy? What if I do this at home what do I buy and is it pretty simple to do? Thank you all so much.

I assume you want to upgrade the OS?
It is fairly simple but first you have to tell us which mini it is as this
dictates the latest OS X version you can install. See if you can identify
it here
<http://lowendmac.com/mini/mac-mini-index.html >
You can also go to Apple menu > About this Mac and tell us what it says for
Processor and Memory.

Howdy.
First, Nanci, no one can help until we have some more information from
you about your Macintosh computer model.
Second, can we assume you want to upgrade from Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger to
Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion?
That is a very big upgrade since you would be jumping past Leopard,
Snow Leopard, and Lion. This major jump covers a whole slew of
changing technology and old technology dropped and abandoned.
It is very possible that you would need to do a lot more than just
"upgrade" the Mac OS X system.
Here are some important things to find out first.
1. If your Mac Mini is a PowerPC mini (rather than the newer Intel
processor Minis), then you are out of luck. It's too old to upgrade to
Mountain Lion.
2. Do you have an AppleTalk printer? AppleTalk networking support was
removed in Snow Leopard.
3. Are you using PowerPC coded software programs? If so you are out
of luck. In order to run a PowerPC coded application on an Intel
processor Mac, something called Rosetta is required and Rosetta is no
longer part of the Mountain Lion system.
Denver Dan
Just as an FYI, here are the Mac OS X system numbers and cat names
listed with the date the OS was released:
10.0 Cheetah - March 2001
10.1 Puma - September 2001
10.2 Jaguar - August 2002
10.3 Panther - October 2003
10.4 Tiger - April 2005
10.5 Leopard - October 2007
10.6 Snow Leopard - August 2009
10.7 Lion - July 2011
10.8 Mountain Lion - July 2012

Tiger Mac minis go from Tiger to Lion 10.7.4 Max with a maximum of 4GB of RAM. Your model missed the cut for Mountain Lion.
Where are you? If you are in the SF Bay area I can help you.
The smartest thing to do is to find someone who has a Lion install DVD or Flash Drive and to put it on your Mac mini with 4GB of RAM and then sell it for $400 and buy the next - not out yet - Ivy Bridge Mac mini for $599 and it will be running radically faster then the Mac mini you have.
We expect the new Mac mini to be announced this week or next. Any day now. It will ship with 4 or 8GB of RAM max 16GB and includes USB 3 ports and HDMI out. Your Mac mini is not worth putting any money into. It is more valuable to you as an item you can convert into cash you can put towards the new model. Craig's List is your friend.

Define "upgrade." Memory? Hard drive? OS? What? Also describe your
mini. If it is a PPC machine then Leopard is the latest you can use
and probably not all that much better for your purposes than Tiger
and you would lose the ability to run Classic apps. Of course it you
are new, though, you probably don't have any classic apps.

It is not a Mountain Lion "flub" of any kind.

The odd thing about all this is that somehow a folder with the name 'Applications' is contained in folder of the same name. I would have expected the OS to have prevented that happening. But nevertheless it seems to be the case that you have two 'Applications' folders, both named 'Applications', one inside the other.

Since she doesn't have any backup strategy, unfortunately no. Good thought, however.
Your question reminds me, however, that she SHOULD have one, and that I probably shouldn't meddle more with her files until we back up what she has now. Thanks for that :-)
Once I've created a viable backup, I'll pull out the Applications Folder that I think is the culprit and see if I can delete the aliases one at a time.

I would have thought so, but I may not have picked the right icon to drag to the desktop previously. As I told another list member who offered a suggestion, the other thing that this episode has brought home to me is that my wife needs a backup strategy. Before I muck around TOO much, I'll implement that (I could do some real DAMAGE, I fear, running terminal), but I think the Folder that needs to be escorted to the trash is "Applications_

Hi folks,
Kind of a long story, so I 'll try to shorten it. I build guitars. I have a video I want to move to the ipad gen 1 so I can keep it on the bench with me when building. I converted the ts files to both .mov and .mp4 in anticipation of moving them to the ipad. After moving the files over, the ipad shows almost 3 GB of video, but I'll be darned if I can find them. Can anyone get me in the right place? I know I'm going to feel stupid for not thinking of the answer, but I don't know where to look.
