Four iPad minis will be given away in a holiday raffle organized by a California mom, children's author and educational app developer. Melissa Northway has pulled together 32 children's app developers from several countries to join in the giveaways, which kicked off Nov. 13 and will take place during the holiday season. Each prize package will include an iPad mini 16GB, a collection of educational and storybook apps and a case by Domeo Products in the color of the winner's choice.

Each prize package will include an iPad mini 16GB, a collection of educational and storybook apps and a case by Domeo Products in the color of the winner's choice.
The raffle is open worldwide and can be entered at her author site or dandelion moms, a site Northway founded to give moms support, resources and fun.
The first two iPad minis will be given away Dec. 12 at the dandelion moms and Penelope the Purple Pirate Holiday Facebook party. The second two giveaways will begin Dec. 12, with the winners announced on Penelope's Facebook Page on January 1st. Winners also will be posted on both her author site and dandelion moms website.
"As makers of educational apps and quality learning content for kids, we wanted to make this holiday season really special for four families," said Northway, a mom of one. "The iPad mini can be a great resource. It's mini-sized for mini hands, and families can take advantage of a wealth of great apps for kids on iTunes."
Those entering the contest can Tweet, share on Facebook or pin on Pinterest to gain additional entries into the giveaway, Northway said.
"The developers who are sponsoring this giveaway are members of a hand-picked group that make some of the best children's educational apps in the world," she said. "We are small, independent developers who really care about how technology is consumed by our children. We want technology to be a learning tool, not a baby-sitter."

Northway has since released her second book app, Gerry the Giraffe last month. In 2012, Northway founded Dandelion Moms to help hectic moms like herself find peace in their day and provide a platform for other women to share their journey.

Like most iOS jigsaw puzzle games, this one, played in landscape orientation, employs a vertically scrolling tray that holds all the pieces of the puzzle. As a piece is dragged from the tray on to the white tabletop, it expands to its full size. This allows the user to browse through many individual pieces easily, since they do not assume their final size until dragged on to the board. At its most advanced level, where pictures are 26 pieces wide and 22 pieces high (572 total pieces), pieces dragged from the tray do not expand at all; they are already scaled correctly.
Many jigsaw puzzle games provide a view of the finished puzzle as a reference, but Puzzle Plus HD eschews this possibility that would have the effect of reducing the challenge presented by the puzzle. Players will soon find that assembling oil paintings is more difficult than photos, simply because every part of a painting is more imaginative and less predictable than most photographic scenes. Puzzle champions can engage the "Rotate Piece" option, which allows pieces to be dragged from the tray oriented incorrectly. Each time the player double taps a piece, it rotates 90 degrees, thus the option effectively multiplies the complexity of each puzzle by a factor of four.

The reproduction of the included art masterworks is excellent, as are the detail and color of the downloadable photographic pictures, and the ability to zoom in and out facilitates the appreciation of subtle details of line and color. The touch interface performs perfectly, and dragging any piece creates a subtle shadow around it, as if it were being lifted and moved. Pieces that have been correctly assembled can be moved as a single unit, and pieces can be returned to the tray at any time until they are needed. Another feature that sets Puzzle Plus HD apart from similar apps is that it is possible to cover one piece with another, simulating the confusion of apparently missing pieces, so common in doing actual jigsaw puzzles. For entertainment, laughter, accomplishment, and puzzlement have a friend over on a Saturday night to work on the 26x22, rotating pieces puzzle of Vincent van Gogh's classic Starry Night.

Like most iOS jigsaw puzzle games, this one, played in landscape orientation, employs a vertically scrolling tray that holds all the pieces of the puzzle. As a piece is dragged from the tray on to the white tabletop, it expands to its full size. This allows the user to browse through many individual pieces easily, since they do not assume their final size until dragged on to the board. At its most advanced level, where pictures are 26 pieces wide and 22 pieces high (572 total pieces), pieces dragged from the tray do not expand at all; they are already scaled correctly.
Many jigsaw puzzle games provide a view of the finished puzzle as a reference, but Puzzle Plus HD eschews this possibility that would have the effect of reducing the challenge presented by the puzzle. Players will soon find that assembling oil paintings is more difficult than photos, simply because every part of a painting is more imaginative and less predictable than most photographic scenes. Puzzle champions can engage the "Rotate Piece" option, which allows pieces to be dragged from the tray oriented incorrectly. Each time the player double taps a piece, it rotates 90 degrees, thus the option effectively multiplies the complexity of each puzzle by a factor of four.

Pieces that have been correctly assembled can be moved as a single unit, and pieces can be returned to the tray at any time until they are needed. Another feature that sets Puzzle Plus HD apart from similar apps is that it is possible to cover one piece with another, simulating the confusion of apparently missing pieces, so common in doing actual jigsaw puzzles. So begins the intro animation for Rex Rooster: Eggsterminator, a game whose breakneck pace will challenge even the most experienced arcade/action players. Featuring expertly rendered animated chicks, predators, and special effects, the detailed game gives players the opportunity of beating back an assortment of vicious predators by splattering them with eggs.
Gameplay takes place in portrait orientation, with enemies advancing from the top of the screen, trying to reach the five bird nests at the bottom of the screen. The isometric view is from above and behind the chicks, offering a dynamic view on the action. At the start of the game, Rex is alone protecting the nests. As players earn coins they can add additional chicks to the horizontal row at the bottom of the screen. Rex throws standard eggs, which break to create an slimey bull's eye on the predator's face.
Predators range in size from large to small, with the smallest poachers the most difficult to hit successfully. Wearing angry, vicious expressions and moving with cat-like stealth, the predators include the following: rats, weasels, cats, martens, foxes, badgers, wolves, lynxes and bears. Each of the predators moves at the same rate of speed, taking about 12 - 15 seconds to reach the nests. This allows more than enough time to hit a few animals. However, their attacks come in waves, with more than 10 predators advancing at one time.
Several factors influence performance in the game. First, animals that are directly in front of Rex present a smaller profile than the identical animal advancing from the left or right. Second, the smaller the predator, the more difficult it is to hit. Third, players must increase their rate of fire as the number of attackers increases (which can lower accuracy). Fourth, the predators react differently to the eggs. Badgers have to be hit twice, wolves have to be hit 3 times and bears have to be hit 4 times. Foxes have to be hit twice in rapid succession or they will shake themselves clean, and lynxes will run faster after the first hit. Last, after a hit, a gold coin may be left behind where the predator stood. To collect coins and eggs left on the battlefield, players must touch them within the first few seconds after they appear. Expert players have a very high rate of fire, excellent accuracy, and pick up coins and eggs between shots.
Rewarding high rates of fire and accuracy of greater than 90% is the Frenzy Bar, a horizontal health meter underneath Rex. Greater speed and accuracy assure greater multipliers, leading to higher scores and more coins. Their are a variety of items players may shop for, including additional nest and an assortment of bombs. Most entertaining are the eight kinds of special eggs that can be employed through store purchases. Special eggs enable players to hit more targets per throw and light up the screen with animated effects.
