Are you holding Option when you reboot? Option allows you to select & target a startup device whether it be external, internal, DVD, CD, or Flash drive.

Well, I took the bull by the horns, with assistance from Take Control of Upgrading to Mountain Lion, and re-installed Mountain Lion on my hard drive that is in process right now. So far so good. I am soooo glad I took the repeated advice of the gurus on this list and made sure I had set up Super Duper to create a clone and update it twice a week.
I also wanted to let people know that I went out and bought Airport Extreme, installed it (no big deal of course, thank you Apple) and it did the trick as far as extending my wi-fi reception to the other end of our house, unlike the linksys router I had before. I am especially pleased since someday I may want to get Apple TV and when I do, I will be able to stream Netflix onto a TV screen at that end of the house (of course I also have to upgrade the TV, so all of these improvements are some time in the future, but a gal can dream).

All's well that ends well. I have erased the hard drive, reinstalled Mountain Lion, restored my files from the clone and am back in business. Thanks to the help from people on this list, I have save myself four hours of my time (up to Burlington, Vermont, to have the problem diagnosed, back home again for a few days while waiting for the diagnosis, back again to retrieve the computer, and back home) as well as the expense in gas, to say nothing of expenses for repair (Apple Care for this computer had expired). All of these savings would not be possible but for the kindness of people on this list.
FYI, though booting in safe mode didn't work, booting in recovery mode (Command-R) did work, and Disk Utility gave me a bad diagnosis for the hard drive, namely that it couldn't repair it. Hence the erase and reinstall.

I'll sleep a lot better tonight. Buona notte.

Howdy.

Do you mean that your Mac can't boot from the Recovery partition? Try
pressing Command r to boot from recovery partition.

You might try booting with the Option key pressed. This is a special
type of startup command that will show images of each hard drive with a
bootable partition including the Recovery partition. You then use the
arrow keys to pick the drive image, the partition, to boot from.

If it won't boot from regular partition OR from Recovery partition then
I think you need to erase the whole shebang and ins all a clean
Lion/Mountain Lion.

Note that if you have not made a bootable DVD of Mountain Lion (when
you first bought and downloaded it) you can still download your ML
purchase again from Apple.

Howdy.

Joan, glad things are back to working.

However, do you have a working UPS battery box that your iMac is
plugged in to?

If not, I really recommend it.

If you find yourself near a big computer store, or a computer chain
store like Micro Center, the often carry these in stacks by the front
door as a loss leader at good prices.

If you do get one or already have a UPS box, then be sure to test the
battery to see if it needs replacing. They all do are several years.
Then check to see that your computer is plugged into the battery
protected socket on the UPS and not the surge only socket (if it has
both of these kinds of sockets - some do and some do not).

A UPS might have prevented the problem you experienced. I have 5 in my
house and use them on expensive equipment.

good luck!

1. My friend has my old iMac with OS 10.4. He moved it from one room to another and when he started it up, he got a rectangle with a Hardware Test procedure on it. He can do the tests but it will not go away. If you shut down and restart it, the Test area is back. I sent him the directions for a safe start and he said it did not work. I have never come across this. Any help will be appreciated.

2. When I start Safari on my AirBook running Mt. Lion, the opening page will not start up till I hit the X to stop loading and hit the go arrow. Then I get a "force load" message and that brings the pages right up. I have run utilities, verifying the disc and repairing it and permissions. I have also done Onyx cleaning and automation using their settings but nothing has helped. Any ideas?

Thank you so very much
