James,

You can access VM from any phone, cellular or landline by dialing your number. It's in the manual that is available online .

http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iphone_user_guide.pdf

You can find it at http://www.apple.com/support/ by drilling down under Manuals.

As for the voice passcode, you can find information on that at AT&Ts site. For it to be the same as your iPhone unlock code, you must have set that in the past and just don't remember.

Yes, the POTS tricks, don't work on cell phones. The switching equipment is completely different. I think nztours was speaking of landlines, at least in New Zealand.

Unfortunately, that link doesn't provide info that's helpful for an iPhone.

I "chatted" with a series of 3 ATT reps today and learned the following:

1. It's NOT possible to set the ATT iPhone to block transmission of the caller ID info by default but reveal it for a single call.

2. It IS possible to set the ATT iPhone to show caller ID info by default but hide it for a single call by prepending the dial string with "#31#" (I tried it, and it works). By the way, pre-pending the dial string on an ATT iPhone with "*82" doesn't seem to do anything. The call goes through, but the show/hide caller ID settings stored in the phone's settings are not overridden.

3. It IS possible to retrieve ATT iPhone "visual voicemail" from a landline. Dial your own number, press the "*" key when you hear your own voicemail greeting begin, then enter your voicemail passcode. I didn't remember creating a passcode. The chat rep suggested trying last 7 digits of the phone number, 1111, and 0000, none of which worked, but my phone unlock code DID work. I don't know if that means the unlock code is linked, at the network servers, to the voicemail account, or whether I'd set a passcode years ago and just forgot.

This info is from the AT&T site:

Access voicemail from a landline phone

Place a call to the wireless number and do not answer.
Interrupt the greeting by pressing the star key (*).
When prompted, enter voicemail password.

There's no item about Caller ID in my phone under Settings>Phone. I'm running iOS 6.0.1 on a 4S.

Now THAT is weird.

First Panel is "My Number"

Second Panel is named "Calls" and contains Choices for:

Reply with Message >

Call Forwarding >

Call Waiting >

Show My Caller ID >
and
TTY

and below that is

Change Voicemail Password.

I guess it's possible that stuff is all carrier specific. Mine, of course, is ATT.

Then it must be the carrier, James.

I'm on Verizon, and the "Calls" panel has only 'Reply with Message' followed by 'TTY'

Below that is 'Change Voicemail Password' which is followed by 'Dial Assist,' 'SIM PIN' and 'Verizon Services'

Now THAT is really bizarre. Why would a carrier choose not to offer a commonly-requested and easy-to-implement basic component of every day phone service?

I hear lots of squawks about ATT's heavy-handed approach to its customers, but unless they've somehow managed to implement the "show or hide Caller ID" choice on some other screen, that alone would take them off my list as a possible service provider.

Y'all:
Using my Mac, I'm able to use Compuserve for webmail, but would like to have the full service Compuserve software/desktop on my Mac. Is there such a thing? I tried downloading software that would supposedly do this, but ran into error messages when trying to install: "Cannot install this application because Power PC is no longer supported". Is there a workaround to this, or some other avenue to get this done?
Help appreciated,
Rich in Blue Ridge.

Howdy.

I had no idea that CompuServe was still around.

The "Power PC" message means that this software will not run on recent
versions of Mac OS X system. This is because several versions ago
Apple removed a thing called Rosetta.

Rosetta allowed an Intel processor based Macintosh to run old software
intended to run on old Power PC processor based Macs.

My antique PowerPC Macintosh G4/533 GHz/Dual Processor would run this
software without needing an interpreter/translator like Rosetta.

The issue here is that if CompuServe has not bothered to update it's
software for current Macintosh models, something they should have done
YEARS ago, then you are out of luck.

i would guess that it might be possible to use a program like VM Fusion
or Parallels or VirtualBox to create a virtual machine on your Mac and
then install an older version of Mac OS X in it that has the Rosetta
feature included. I think that would be Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard but
Rosetta didn't come with Snow Leopard by default and had to be
downloaded separately and I don't know if it is still available.

Can anybody verify that this is possible?

Dan:
Thanks much for your detailed response. Yep, Compuserve has been around since the last ice age. I'm only still using it because I've use it since it's inception in a DOS format.
It's the browser that I'm familiar with, but I think based on what you've said, that I need to switch to a browser/email software that will get along with my iMac. Do any of you have favorites that you would recommend? Suggestions appreciated.

Not as it comes, but it can be implemented with an AppleScript.

You can find a script here:

I have done several searches and read a bunch but have not found the solution to my problem. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Here is the problem:

I work at a small museum and we have two Macs, a 2006 iMac running 10.7.5 and a 2011 Mini running 10.8.2. Both are connected to a wireless network.

The problem is that the iMac can put files in the Public Folder Drop Box of the Mini but when the same action is attempted from the Mini to the iMac, there is a "Connection Failed" notice on the Mini.

Thank you in advance.

First, check that you have "System Preferences > Internet & Wireless > Sharing > File Sharing" configured so that other computers can see the iMac, and that it's configured to allow the Mini to put files in the iMac's public folder (either Write Only or Read/Write) access to that Folder.
