I suggest you read this page, esp. the first paragraph. http://webcenters.netscape.compuserve.com/menu/about.jsp

You were looking to engage an old method of using the internet which has been for the most part left by the wayside. I used AOL back in the late 90's so I remember how it was back then.
It seems AOL still has their client so one could use that but I don't know if would jibe with your compuserve email address. It was convenient back then, my internet training wheels as it were, but there's much better ways to browse nowadays and Safari, Firefox, and Google Chrome will all do the job for you.

I tried downloading software that would supposedly do this, but ran into error messages when trying to install: "Cannot install this application because Power PC is no longer supported". Is there a workaround to this, or some other avenue to get this done?

Howdy.

Rich, you already have free email and free web browser apps in your Mac
OS X based iMac.

I'm assuming you are running the Mac OS X system and not the long
discontinued Macintosh OS as in Mac OS 9.

Every Mac OS X system comes with a good (free) email program called
Mail. It's in the Applications folder. Mail works with multiple
accounts and has some excellent features.

Every Mac OS X system also comes with Safari web browser. Safari is by
Apple, it's free, and is quite good. Safari is also in the Applications
folder.

I use a web browser called SeaMonkey that is based on the old Netscape
engine/Mozilla. It includes an email section.

I also use a commercial email program called GyazMail. GyazMail is low
cost, reliable, has some good features like filters and other features,
but while it can display HTML content (things like different fonts,
text sizes, images), it can't create HTML content.

Good luck.

I hear you--I signed up with CompuServe in 1987! I canceled my
CompuServe subscription ca. 2003, so anything I say will be
speculative, but here goes. Does CompuServe allow you to use generic
browser and email software, or does it have to be CompuServe-
specific? If the latter, how important is it to you to be able to use
CompuServe? In my case, the answer to the latter question was "not
very." I got an account with an ISP and quickly discovered that a
generic email program could organize and archive my emails much
better than the CompuServe software I was using. Dissatisfaction with
CompuServe's support also entered into it, but that's another
discussion. I had to inform my email correspondents of my new non-
CompuServe address, but that was the price of switching. I was
running OS/2, not MacOS, at the time, but the principle is the same.

I think that worked. I now have listened to podcasts from the 9th on the phone.

"HAL9000" jrswebhomeSince you have been using iTunes on a computer or the iCloud to back up your phone, I would suggest completely wiping the phone and reinstalling a fresh system, not a backup. iTunes knows what apps you have purchased and downloaded freely.

I use an iPhone 4 and have had no problems w the new iOS. If I do, I completely shut down the phone, then restart. Many issues are solved in this way.

Howdy.

I meant to reply earlier but deleted the original post.

There may be some issues with podcasts and iTunes and iPhones and
iPads. This is uncertain but I put in several calls to Apple Tech
Support on a new iPad 3 which had some problems with podcasts.

The suggestions were to turn off the automatic sync stuff for a bunch
of things in iTunes and then do all the regular things, sync them,
etc., and finally to sync podcasts last. Tech support suggested to try
syncing only a few podcasts at a time with the iOS device at first.

They also suggested downloading and using the new Podcasts app for
podcasts instead of using the Music app on the iOS device.

When I was with AT&T in 3s and earlier iterations, I was able to change "My Number" to the Google Voice number. Apple's and Verizon's technical choices diminish the value of my selected phone number and I've seriously considered suing them.

I use an AT&T iPhone 5 with iOS 6.0.1 and am easily able to change "my number" in Settings/Phone, and am able to set the phone to show/not show caller ID in Settings/Phone (though not on an individual basis - only universally).

Howdy.

Jim, be sure that both Macs are configured the same for File Sharing.

Then check the type of User Account on each Mac. There are several
levels of User Account that can be created. The "Standard" user
account is a basic and very restricted account.

Both account ought to be "Admin" accounts unless you have a security
reason for using restricted Standard/basic accounts.

When you see the "Connection Failed" notice on the Mac Mini exactly at
what point do you see this? Can you "see" the iMac in the Sidebar of a
Finder window under the Shared section? Can you click and click and
then "see" the Dropbox folder on the iMac on the Mini BEFORE attempting
to drag a file to the iMac's Public Folder?

And, a note, if you have a security issue where you might need to
create Standard/basic user accounts that are restricted from installing
software, deleting software, and much more, you can still set these up
via File Sharing for certain access rights to specific locations and
folders on a network.

Greetings!

I understand that the 'Contacts' data is stored in the 'Applications Support' file in the 'Users'>'Library'.

How do I open the 'Library' file in 'Users'?

Thanks,

earle

Howdy.

Earle, the answer depends on which version of Mac OS X you have
installed. This is why it's a good idea to mention the vernon in your
post

In Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, and then in Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, Apple
made the User's Library folder invisible.

Yes, I think it's a dumb choice.

Several options.

1. You can make the Users/Library folder temporarily visible by using
the Finder's Go menu while pressing the Option key. Press Option,
select Go menu, then pick the Library that shows up.

2. You can make the User Library folder permanently visible by putting
it in the Sidebar under Favorites.

First open the User's Library folder so it appears on the Desktop.
Then you use a little blue folder icon that you see on the top center
of every Finder window (to the immediate left of the window name). In
the case of the Library folder, drag this little blue Folder icon next
to "Library" in the top center of the window to the Sidebar and drop it
there. It will remain there.

Different tip for this Folder icon. You can use this same folder icon
to print a list of files in a folder. Drag the folder icon to a
printer icon on your Desktop or in your Dock. To make a printer icon
always present on Desktop or Dock open Printer & Scan in System
Preferences then drag a printer queue icon from the left Printers
column to Desktop or Dock.

Howdy.

I've been reading in TidBits about a new keyboard called the Quiet Pro
by Matias.

It uses the same mechanical key switches as the late GREAT Apple
Extended II keyboard that was so extremely popular after about 1990.
Some are still in use today via ADB to USB adapters.

Many consider the Apple Extended II keyboard to be the best keyboard
ever made. Quiet, durable, fast, easy touch.

The Apple Extended II keyboard was expensive and so is the Matias Quiet
Pro.

I found the Matias Quiet Pro at OWC for $129.99.

<http://www.matias.ca/quietpro/mac/>

If anyone here has tried this keyboard, please post your opinion and
thoughts.

Here's some features from the review I read.

1. Caps lock key actually depresses and stays down.

2. Key cap symbols are laser etched and do not wear off.

3. Keyboard is higher off desk. This is an issue with the Apple
aluminum extended keyboard. I can't use a wrist pad with it and often
make typos because I don't depress the space bar and bottom row of keys
enough.

4. Key caps are not flat and closely spaced but have natural
"sculpted" curves and have some spacing between them.

5. There is a Function control key. I'm not quiet sure where this key
is looking at the images.

6. 3 USB ports.

I am installing a new hard drive and doing some long-overdue housecleaning.

One if the things I did is move my iTunes Music folder from its default location. I didn't do it properly because now when I launch iTunes I see the generic screen with no music listed.

I've searched Apple Support a bit and see that later versions (after 6?) the name of the iTunes Music folder was changed to iTunes Media folder. I tried renaming the folder but I think this just made my hole deeper. )-:

Would someone using Snow Leopard please tell me where their iTunes Music (or iTunes Media) folder is located and what it's called? If someone has moved it to another location, step-by-step recollection of what you did would probably be helpful.

Thanks,
Dave
