If you intend to keep the Mac for a while I would replace all the RAM with
the largest that will fit from Crucial or OWC.

Thanks for your reply Dan.

Apparently iTunes folder is right where it should be. But for grins I click the Reset button and then the Change button and again navigate to the iTunes Music folder. Then I click the OK button. The Preferences window closes and then... nothing.

When I choose Music in the left column of the iTunes browser window, only one or two songs are listed there.

For example, to pick a specific song, it's located thus:

<hard drive>/Ds Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/The Beatles/Revolver/Good Day Sunshine

In Finder, if I double-click on this song in the iTunes Music folder, it will become visible in the iTunes music listing and start playing.

Any further suggestions?

Thanks,
Dave

Howdy.

Sounds like it lost it's mind. Maybe got moved around.

You can try the Add To Library¡Ä command under the File menu in
iTunes.

I recently replaced my two WD 2TB Drives because of the same problem you
were having, and replaced them with two Glyph GPT50 2TB drives. It was an
expensive venture, but the two Wester Digital Drives were of no value to me
if I could not rely on them.

Unboxing the Glyph Drives really gives one a sense of their build quality,
and of course I researched most of the drives available, and came to the
conclusion that peace of mind was going to cost me. It was a decision I do
not think I am ever going to regret.

Have a look at them here: http://www.glyphtech.com

As far as I can tell, Glyph makes enclosures, not drives.
Do you know whose drive mechanisms they install in their enclosures?

Also, I do not see USB3 or Thunderbolt listed as connection choices.

Absolutely. It's no good having great exclosures if the actual mechanisms
(internal drives) are the same ones that have let you down before.

And also, there's now no way I'd buy any new computer or external drive
that lacks both USB3 and TB (to be clear, it must have at least one of
those). That would be like settling for USB1 when USB2 and FW were
available.

They make external hard drives; they don't sell any bare enclosures.

Folks on the Web say that they use Seagate mechanisms, but that is more or less irrelevant. What's important is that they test them and return those that fail the testing for replacement. When you purchase a Glyph, you are putting your faith in them, not the company who manufactures their internal mechanism. If you do a Web search you will find that Glyph drives are as reliable as they come.

They aren't available with those interfaces yet. However, since there are no drives that can oversaturate the FW800 interface yet, if you have a Mac with only a Thunderbolt interface, you can use a Thunderbolt to FW800 adapter and get as much performance as possible.

I seldom use Safari but wanted to test my website in Safari and I cannot get it to open. I've tried to update it but updater won't allow it as it is up to date.

Saturday evening I had the Apple Genius Bar reinstall (Lion) operating system because it bellyflopped earlier in the day. I haven't a clue why but my OS was corrupted and kept crashing on startup. It hung and when I did a manual reboot, bad stuff happened. Now Safari is behaving just like the OS was, crashing upon attempts to open it. Fortunately the Genius was able to just install the system over my existing system and not have to wipe my disk with all my applications and files. Though it's all backed up I was lucky to not have to rebuild anything. Any suggestions about Safari? I'm at 10.7.5 .

Also when the Genius installed the OS he named it Test, so now when I search for the computer on the network it is called TEST. How do I fix that? I know it is something simple but I can't figure it out. I'm so out of practice troubleshooting. Seems these days the systems are more stable and I just can't remember how to do all the things I used to do to solve stupid problems. I couldn't even remember how to boot from my system backup.. Life is good!
I'm so grateful I have a genius bar 20 miles away and appreciate how little time it takes to fix things with help.

Mary

I struggled with the computer name problem for a longtime. As an old UNIX system administrator I kept searching for "Hostname" with no luck. Was sure it should be somewhere in Networking.

I finally found it. Its in Apple Menu / System Preferences / Sharing.

OS X 10.7.4

p.s. I have a Genius bar twenty minutes away. That's 20 minutes at 400 knots over open ocean.

What you are seeing is usually a sign of a software conflict or an outdated plug-in. A common occurrence when you update your OS.

Things to try:

Update or disable any plug-ins:
Safari --> Preferences --> Extensions

Reset Safari:
Safari --> Reset Safari

Update Flash:
Uninstall the copy of Flash that you have installed with this uninstaller (Adobe recommends doing this first):
<http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player_osx.dmg>
or
http://is.gd/lrnKUG

Then download the latest version of Flash directly from Adobe, and install it:
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
http://www.adobe.com/downloads/

Other things that tend to help:

In the Finder
Option-click the Go menu
Your ~/Library will appear in the menu; choose it
--> Preferences
and delete this file (it will be rebuilt the next time that you launch Safari):
com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist

Delete all of your Flash cookies (this cannot be accomplished using Safari's Security settings; they don't effect Flash cookies):
Delete everything in these two folders:

- In the Finder
Option-click the Go menu
Your ~/Library will appear in the menu; choose it
Trash all of the files in the folder at:
PreferencesMacromedia/Flash Player/#SharedObjects

- In the Finder
Option-click the Go menu
Your ~/Library will appear in the menu; choose it
Trash all of the files in the folder at:
/Preferences/Macromedia/Flash Player/macromedia.com/support/flashplayer/sys

Howdy.

A note how to revert a new feature in GraphicConverter version 8.3.1 to
the normal look.

GraphicConverter 8.3.1 introduces something called "Create custom
enclosing folder icon."

With this on, Folder icons seen in the Browser view or Convert & Modify
view are a sort of 5 angled miniature icons of some of the contents of
the folder but it's NOT a folder icon. I found it very irritating and
at first confusing and finally very unnecessary.

I ended up posting a message in the owner/programmer's group about this
and he responded with the Preference setting that reverts this to
normal.

So here it is.

GraphicConverter>Preferences>Browser, uncheck Create custom enclosing
folder icon. Done!

Another though, since you'll be changing your addresst: You might
consider getting your own personal domain and setting up an address
at that domain, which is what I did several years ago. If you do
that, then you have a stable address even if you change ISPs.

This is an intriguing article in TUAW on a way to have more control over multiple Time Machine backups.

This a quote from story.

"For those situations, says researcher Simon Heimlicher, there's a cool little Terminal command called "tmutil." The command, which was introduced in OS X 10.7 Lion, allows you to reconnect your computer to older backups if you swap hard drives or upgrade your Mac. While Lion and Mountain Lion will give you the option to inherit old backups when you migrate your machine, it's nice to be able to do it manually if you need to."

When I get back to my desktop I'll try to provide a full reference and link to the article.
