I installed a 2nd hard drive in my Mac Mini and want to use it as the boot disk. I installed a fresh OS onto it and then booted from a backup.

I then started Migration Assistant to... well, assist me. So there are 3 drives involved here: the old boot drive, the new boot drive, and the backup (that I'm booted from right now) I'll call the current boot drive -- it is not a complete backup, only system files, user, etc.

If I boot from the new drive, MA tells me I can't replace the main (only) user because I'm using that identity.
If I boot from a backup drive, MA tells me that I can migrate any date *to* the new drive.
It seems that my only option is to

The problem is that MA only wants to copy from a source drive to the current boot drive. It only works "from there to *here*", not "from there to there".

How can I

My main issue is that Migration Assistant is set up to migrate files from one *computer* to another. Yes you can migrate from an external hard disk but... Well, here's the story:

I installed a 2nd hard drive in my Mac Mini and want to use it as the boot volume. So there are 3 drives involved here: the old boot drive, the new boot drive, and the backup -- it is not a complete backup, it's small so has only system files, user, etc.

I installed a fresh OS onto the new drive.

If I boot from the new drive, MA tells me I can't replace the main (only) user because I'm using that identity.
If I boot from a backup drive, MA tells me that I can migrate any date *to* the new drive, which is not my goal.
It seems that my only option is to

1. Use an external drive to migrate files to this boot drive (but not replace the main user)
2. Migrate from this boot drive to another computer (but not another internal hard drive)

How can I migrate my files from the old boot disk to the new one?

Please note that this computer has no optical drive.

Thanks,
Dave

If I understand you correctly, I would do this:-

Log in using your user on the new boot drive.

Create a new (temp) admin user on that drive.

Log out, then log back in as the new admin user.

Migrate from the old boot drive to the new one.

Log out, then log back in using your newly migrated user.

If everything is OK, delete the temp admin user.

Thanks, Otto, it looks like such a scenario would work.

Questions:
1. Can I have 2 Admin users (my one-and-only user on the new drive is also Admin user)?
2. How does a temp Admin user differ from a permanent(?) Admin user?

Thanks,
Dave

Howdy.

Here the link to the TUAW article on using Terminal to increase Time

Thanks for the suggestions and leading me to the right folder with the preferences. I deleted all the recommended preferences but since I couldn't open Safari I couldn't make any changes within the program.

I did manage to fix it but not in any conventional manner. Now desperate (not really there are other browsers), I tried something simple and it worked, I copied a working version of Safari from my laptop (same OS etc) into my User Application folder, I couldn't copy it into the Applications folder as it is a "Necessary Apple component" and the OS wouldn't let me replace Safari. So the work around was to delete the corrupt "Package Contents" and replace them with the ones that worked.

Haven't a clue but that issue is resolved.

Still wish I understood more about the recent glitches that corrupted my OS and Safari. I do frequent backups but this event would have hurt if I'd had to wipe my OS with all my Applications too. Plus several projects that are in limbo on my desktop. Feeling lucky this time.

Also thanks for pointing me to the System Preferences to change the name of my computer.

I do but I'll have to see what is available here in Thailand. Any shipments that come here from a supplier in the US are dutifully labeled as to their contents and then give the postal folks here (or FedEx) a reason to collect duties on the value of the contents.

My RMA RAM from OWC was labeled "warranty replacement parts", but they put the value of the dimms on the packing list and I had to pay $5-6 duty to the FedEx guy to get the package. Don't even try to send an iphone here as they really stick it to you then!

Smith and Jones agree on this!

Graphic Converter is my photo app of choice. I have been a happy user since Thorsten Lemke brought out the first version -- long time ago. I have never had a bad experience with this program. Lemke is quick to respond to enquiries and very helpful -- always.

I'd like to know if anyone can help me with a problem I'm having with the Finder in Mountain Lion. Ever since I updated to Mountain Lion, I'm having to relaunch the Finder anytime I close or save a document or eject a disk. All I get is the endlessly spinning beach ball. After I relaunch, the problem is resolved until I open another file. Facebook, mail, safari, etc. seems to be all right. I am using Adobe CS4 and every app in that is also affected; many times having to relaunch the Finder and force-quit the CS4 apps to get things going again. I'm using a 20" iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB SDRAM. Before the Mountain Lion upgrade, everything was working fine. I've restarted many times. Would appreciate any suggestions.

Are you sure CS4 is compatible w Lion? How much RAM is in your machine?

I'm sorry, 2 gigs of RAM, just sounds inadequate to run CS4 if it is compatible.

Good thought but the CS4 ran just fine for years before I upgraded to Mountain Lion just 2 weeks ago. I'm using a 20" iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB SDRAM.
