Howdy.

Jim, there is a known issue that might be impacting your network
connection problem.

This is a fairly rare issue.

There are two basic ways to use your network to connect to another
computer (and other ways, too).

1. Shared things as seen in the Sidebar of a Finder window.

2. Using the Go menu and the Connect to Server command.

The Connect to Server methods may work more often when the Sidebar
method does not.

I've seen this problem occasionally but it was more often a number of
years ago. In addition, connecting to a Windows computer may work
better using the Go menu and the Connected to Server command.

Note that you can use both the Macintosh AFP or the Windows SMB network
file system protocols in Connect to server.

Example for a Macintosh on your network: afp://xxxxxxxxxx and put
the computer's name in place of the x's.

AFP means Apple Filesystem Protocol.

Note that in Connect to Server you can save one or more different
connects and in future click to connect instead of retyping.

Find the name on a network for the OTHER computer you want to connect
to in the OTHER computer's Sharing panel in System Preferences.

You could also use SMB for a windows computer. SMB is sometimes
pronounced Samba.

Here's a MacWorld article from Mac OS X Hints on this topic that may
give you some clues to solve the problem.

<http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20100403050702737>

Here are some other things to check to try to solve this issue.

1. Is a Firewall turned on on either computer?

2. Is there an 2nd account set up for access to the problem computer
and is it configured as Basic or Admin?

3. Is there any antivirus program running?

4. Check the Sharing and Permissions section in Get info for both the
Public folder and the enclosed Drop Box folder on problem Mac.

Public folder should have 3 items in the name section
your account (Me) - set to Read & Write
staff - set to Read only
everyone - set to Read only

The Drop Box folder's Get Info should be:

your account (Me) - Read & Write
staff - Write only (Drop Box)
everyone - Write only( Drop Box)

I periodically reset my iMac password and it isn't working which means I probably hit a wrong key when resetting and all the different combinations I have tried have not revealed the mistake. What to do? I should have let well enough alone.
