5 Tips to Make iTunes 11 Look Normal Again
OS X Daily

[image: iTunes 11 looking normal again]

So you got iTunes
11<http://osxdaily.com/2012/11/29/itunes-11-released-download-now/>,
launched it for the first time, and now you're wondering where everything
is and why it looks so different? You're not alone, any time an apps user
interface is redesigned it's sure to leave some people confused as things
are switched around, hidden, and adjusted. If you're a creature of habit
like me, you'll want to make iTunes look "normal" again, that is, more
familiar to what we've long become accustomed to with the past versions,
and here are five simple tricks to do just that.
Show All Your Music Again by Sorting by "Songs" Instead of Albums

The new album view looks cool and all, but it can make it harder to browse
music because it shows less music on screen. This is a super easy one to
change, just click the "Songs" tab across the top and you'll see a familiar
list of music again. Phew!

[image: Change iTunes 11 UI Sorting]
Show Sidebar to See Playlists, iPhones, iPads, and the iTunes Store

This is probably the most important thing to change immediately, because
for whatever reason Apple hid the sidebar by default and if you're
accustomed to seeing it all the time, that's really silly. Showing the
iTunes sidebar again is simple, and you'll immediately be able to see all
your playlists, iOS devices, and other stuff again:

- From iTunes, pull down the "View" menu and select "Show Sidebar"

Show Status Bar & How Many Songs in iTunes Library Again

The status bar in iTunes tells you how many songs are in a library, what
the playtime is, and how much space it takes up. This is useful knowledge
particularly if you're trying to stuff an album or two onto a pretty full
iPod or iPhone. Showing the status bar again is easy:

- Pull down the "View" menu and select "Show Status Bar"

Show Podcasts Again

If you subscribe to podcasts in iTunes and listen to them frequently, you
probably want quick and easy access to them from the sidebar. You'll have
to check this option in the preferences:

- Open iTunes Preferences and click on the "General" tab
- Check the box next to "Podcasts" under Library

[image: Show podcasts in iTunes 11]
Lose the Color Scheming in Album View

iTunes 11 changes the background color of the display window depending on
album artwork. If you prefer your UI's to be nice and simple, disabling
that feature is easy:

- Open iTunes Preferences and choose on the "General" tab
- Uncheck the box next to "Use custom colors for open albums, movies,
etc"

[image: Stop iTunes changing the background colors for albums]

Got any other tricks to make iTunes 11 look familiar again? Let us know!

If you don't like change, why did you upgrade? Just don't complain you can't access some new feature.

Some people are so resistant to change. Without even giving it a try, you want to make it look like it used to.

Give it a try, and if you don't like the new iTunes, then use the setting changes, AND send Apple feedback. If enough user send constructive feedback, Apple with change it back.

BTW, normal does not mean old or familiar.

I don't think the OP's post was constructive. iTunes 11 just came out and the OP is trying to change it back.

And JR, can you choose a word other than bray with its negative connotation?

Hardly. Those changes are all valid, included options. You make it sound like the OP was offering hacks to disable new features.

One way to look at it. I don't like wasting time kowtowing to Apple's forcing mt to adapt to their idea of what my work flow should be which is why I stay with 10.6.8.

So why does what "some people" do concern you? Better to concern yourself with what you do.

What does 'normal' mean?

Downloaded and installed. Played around in it some. Decided I was better off with the missing beautiful Cover Flow. Tried to restore various iTunes 10 folders from Time Machine backups that morning before. Disaster. The iTunes Apple Store keeps erring, as I cannot authorize nor de-authorize my computer following restoration. Consequently I cannot play movies, books, TVShows, etc. I get the (-42408) error.

Anyone know what missing file I have yet to restore to get the store to work? jr

I would search for 'iTunes' in the root Library and User Library and preferences and restore all of them along with the app.

Or restore everything from just before you updated.

Reed Thomas, who maintains an excellent Web site on the topic of Macintosh malware (with an associated Macintosh Malware catalog) that I've frequently cited
http://www.reedcorner.net/mmg-threats/
http://www.reedcorner.net/mmg-catalog/

has published online the results of a huge comparison test between a large number of Macintosh anti-virus programs:
http://www.reedcorner.net/mac-av-detection-rates/

You can download the raw data in a table here:
http://www.reedcorner.net/downloads/malware_detections.pdf

Interesting tidbits from the results:
- None of the AV programs were 100% effective at detecting all malware
- ClamXav is surprisingly ineffective
- Sophos AV, Dr. Web Light, and Virus Barrier Express, all free, are quite good
- MacKeeper, MacScan, and Kaperski are all just about worthless

I had a working Western Digital external harddrive that I used for my Time Machine backups. A week ago it slipped off the table, however it seemed to work after I connected it.

At some point the WD drive (which is 1 TB) stopped showing my backup volume. It eventually became clear that I had lost backups dating to January.

Not a biggie since I have a SuperDuper! startup-volume clone on another drive, a 500 GB LaCie. I rarely used Time Machine anyway and everything is also on the LaCie.

I want to repartition my WD, however I'm getting a bunch of error messages, such as: Partition failed with the error: POSIX reports: The operation couldn't be completed. Cannot allocate memory.

The most recent message was that the "disk you inserted was not readable ...".

No operation (such as Verify Disk, Repair Disk, Partition) seems to work without an error message. I want to repartition my drive so that I can again use it to back up Time Machine.

Is my Western Digital cooked?

Thanx. Oneal

It's probably broken, but it *might* be the case/enclosure, not the drive
itself. The only way to find out is to buy/borrow a drive dock or
case/enclosure and try the drive in one of those.

Anyone else order new iMac? I ordered 27" base with 1tb fusion then realizes ill be keeping it for many years so I reordered with 3tb fusion and cancelled first one. Left the base ram as it was ridiculously expensive compared to third party ($600 for 32gb va $200 for 32gb or $200 for 16gb vs $50 for 16gb).

I'm about 99% sure it's related to this:
http://www.liquid.info/osx/index.html
which I recently installed from the App Store, and like, but which *is*
running and seems to be working perfectly. The current version is quite
new, although it appears to be based on an earlier Firefox extension. I
think the developer may have used the hyperwords.com domain in the past
although it now seems to be for sale. I sent the developer a message about
the log entries a couple of days ago but haven't received a response.

Thanks in advance for any other ideas anyone may have!

There's really no such thing as translating. It's all a scam. We basically
just make stuff up and try to make it sound plausible.

In the last several weeks, I've had about a half dozen occurrences (or at least that number that I've been around to see) of a popup from Airport Utility 6.1, telling me that my Airport Extreme has an IP address in the 192.168.xxx.xxx range, creating a "double NAT" situation. The "virtual LED" displayed in this popup is amber, not green, and so is the "virtual LED" for Internet access.

The popup also displays my Airport Express (which is configured in bridge mode to extend my network range and provide internet access for my TiVo at the other end of my house); it's "virtual" LED in the popup is green.

The popup advises me to change the Airport Extreme to Bridge Mode.

The weird thing about this is that with no interaction from me, the situation resolves in less than a minute, and at the same time the Airport Extreme returns to the IP address assigned to it, as DHCP server at private IP 10.0.1.1.

My actual internet access is via a Comcast access point. I don't know if it's also capable of doing dhcp.

Any ideas what could cause this? Could it mean that my Airport Extreme "gigabit ethernet" version 5,105, (4 LAN ports, provides only one SSID) is failing? Is it more likely because of a configuration problem between the Comcast terminal adapter and my router?

I have iNET running on my Mac Pro. I don't have any access to configuration of the Comcast device, nor is it visible on iNet scans of my network.

I don't think I've ever seen this popup on my MacBook Pro (which also has Airport Utility installed on it) fwiw.

Thanks for any ideas.
