Welcome to Mac.
It depends on what you mean by "word processing". There's a text editor on your Mac that's OK for very basics things: TextEdit. Just drag its icon from the App folder into the Dock.
MS Word work OK for a full app. For free you can get Open Office. A couple other quite good free apps for simple work would by TexEdit Plus (not Mac's TextEdit), which I use a lot, and Bean.

Open Office does all of those things. Unless you have lots of extra money, Open Office will open and save documents in MS Office formats.

Thanks, Michael. I never did get a chance to d/l Open Office, but I've had
NeoOffice for several versions and will probably never go back to MS Office!
K have a Mac and use OSX v. 10.7.5.
Works like a champ!

As far as I can figure it out, to have the latest verion of NeoOffice you have to pay a fee. OpenOffice is still free. Just something to be aware of.

There is a comprehensive (though slightly outdated) list of all of the available word processors for the Macintosh here:
http://www.emailman
(Apple's Pages is the most obvious word processor missing from this list.)
Missing from that list are:
Bean (free)
http://www.bean-
Pages ($79 part of iWork)
http://www.apple.
Apple offers free tutorials on how to use Pages here:
http://www.apple.
PageHand ($40)
http://pagehand.
Note that OpenOffice/Mac and NeoOffice are listed. These are free (actually, the very latest version of NeoOffice isn't free, but you can download the previous version for free) open-source office suites that include a word processor. Both use the same code-base but were ported to the Macintosh by different groups. There is a third in the family, and it has the most support of the three:
LibreOffice (free)
http://www.libreoff
There is a very lightweight word processor already on your Mac:
TextEdit
http://www.apple.
Which of these is best for you depends on what you intend to do with your word processor.
- Do you need to exchange business documents with Microsoft Word users?
- Do you need to create fliers, newsletters, pamphlets, etc.?
- Do you need to create documents with complex formatting?
- Do you need advanced features such as tables, document comparison, collaboration tools, etc.?
- Are you a professional who does a lot of writing?
- Or do you just need a word processor to write letters and jot things down?

I dropped Open Office like a hot potato when I found it does NOT work with other formats. Unfortunately, you will be stuck with buying Word for the Mac simply because it transfers seamlessly to the PC but it is a very inferior word-processing program and does not support right to left text (though I doubt you will have a need for that).

Need a little more info here, Ms Bacon...
What version of OpenOffice were you trying and what version of your Mac or
PC operating system were you trying it ON, please?
See interspersed below for more comments.

What specifically is "a very inferior word-processing program"? In the
previous sentence you were taking about TWO W-P programs, OO and MSWord.
Which one, in your estimation, is "very inferior"?
To what others?
...and does not support right to left text (though I doubt you will have a

I'm unfamiliar with OO, but do have and use NeoOffice, which is based on OO
and find it most capable.
BTW, so far as working with other formats, I find that when I attempt to
save a WP document, looking only at MS Word entries and ignoring all the
other 'save as' entries, it will save as:
Word 97/2000/XP, Word 95 and 6.0 (.doc)
Word 2003 XML (.xml)
Word 2007 XML (.docx)
FWIW, I am Keith Whaley
OS = OSX v. 10.7.5
NO = v. 3.2.1 Patch 8

I use Microsoft Office all day, every day. I find it to be a superior word processing program in just about every way. There are no other word processors for the Macintosh with as much power, and nothing else that can be counted on to open any and every Word format document, no matter how complex the formatting, no matter which platform they originate on, perfectly. (Word even has a Compatibility Wizard built-in to help ensure that your documents will be perfect when you send them to others.)
There are well over 9,000 users in the MacAttorney User Group. I'd say that somewhere between 85 to 90 percent of them use Microsoft Word and find it to be an essential tool. They don't use Word because they love Microsoft...

Agreed. NeoOffine started life when OpenOffice didn't exst of OSX, but
it does now and has excellent support. NeoOffice adds nothing other than
a small hole in your wallet, so stay away from it I would say.

This afternoon I was helping a friend get ready for a trip to New York. He trades homes with someone in New York every year or two. He has an older MacBook that he hasn't used in two years. It is running Tiger. It has 512 MB of RAM.
He had been sent the wireless password for his host's wireless network and wanted to know what to do with it. I showed him in the wireless menu on the menu bar. But then I wanted to show him where the Network preferences are, in case he needed that as well.
I opened System Prefs and clicked Network. I got a message saying something like (the subject of this message). I couldn't make the message go away. I would click OK and it would just reassert itself. I had to force quit system prefs. I looked over his applications to see if I could quickly see what might have done it, but didn't see anything.
He had a whole list of things for me to do for him, but I resolved I would try to fix it later. However, by the time everything else was done, I forgot to check into it.
Does anyone recognize a message like that, and hopefully, have an idea of what to do about it? It prevented me from making any changes to, or even seeing, his Network preferences.
I would love to be able to tell him what to do to fix it before he leaves here on Tuesday morning. Maybe I should have deleted a preference file??

The solution is to either update to a more recent version of Tiger (or an even later version of OS X), or to delete these files:
"...problem, which manifests after applying Security Update 2008-06, can be fixed permanently by removing the following preferences files:
Go to Library/Preferences
com.apple.airport.
NetworkInterfaces.
preferences.
com.apple.nat.
All these files will regenerate as necessary when the associated system features are accessed. If you're using Airport or Internet Sharing you'll have to reestablish the appropriate settings, because these will have been lost when the preferences files are removed. "
