Exactly which formats did you have trouble with ? I've found it to be
pretty good.
Unfortunately, you will be stuck with buying Word for the Mac simply
because it transfers seamlessly to the PC but it is a very inferior
word-processing program and does not support right to left text (though
I doubt you will have a need for that).

I use text edit for most needs. I only have occasional need for a word processor and have been using LIbre Office on Randy's recommendation successfully.

I just downloaded NeoOffice for OSX 10.7 for free. I see that NO for OSX 10.8 is $10. I seems like more than a reasonable charge, to say the least.

Here I don't understand. I've never used it myself, in fact never even seen it, but I was under the impression that it read and wrote Micro$oft Office documents seamlessly.

I noticed that too quite a while back. You have to type the Hebrew characters in a left to right order. Pages and Text Edit work fine, as does FireFox and Apple's mail. For just a few words it is not that much of a problem. "Shalom" can be typed mem (sofit), vov, lamed, shin to get (I'm typing t his in Mail now, and have no idea if it will transit the internet) 蚸. I always thought it was something I simply did not understand, that there was some way to do it, one I simply did not catch onto. I guess misery loves company, so your message at least kept me from keeping on looking how to do it.

That's because your needs are different to mine. The search and replace has become ridiculously clumsy compared to previous versions nd on the Mac it doesn't support right-to-lft script which is a huge disadvantage for me. Locoscript was a much better WP program

Its pretty good, but not perfect. Certainly OpenOffice can open the
standard MS Office file formats, and most of the time does a perfect job
formatting them. But its not 100% guaranteed, sometimes there are
slightly differences, with fonts for instance.
Note though not even MS itself can get this perfect. I've seen just as
many examples of issues when a document written with MS office on a mac
is opened with MS office on a PC, or vice versa, so OpenOffice is not
really doing any worse..

NeoOffice asks you to donate $10 per year in order to get the latest updates as soon as they are released. You can use it for free if you don't mind waiting before getting the latest version.

For what it's worth, here's an article I found that discusses how to do this using TextEdit and Apple Mail (and other things):

Thanks you Paul. $10 is pretty cheap for a great little WP.
I figure that by the time 5 years are past, you'll either be moving on, or
decide $10/year is pretty inexpensive for what you get...
Most usually "free" stuff is worth just what you pay for it.

Interestingly, it shows how to do it in NeoOffice, but not in Micro$oft Word, which NeoOffice supposedly is sort of the same thing as.
Looks as if my Hebrew did transit the internet okay.
