They're all deleted now, so I can't look at the dates but I do know they were the same apps, same versions.
I just had an idea. For a short while I had CNet Tracker installed and I'll bet that's what did it. I'll keep an eye on the downloads folder but I think I just solved the mystery.

I just upgraded my MP from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, and for the most part it went smoothly. I do have one outstanding issue -- I cannot access the Help system, which is now on-line. For example, if I select "Help->Help Center", I get a list of topics, but I get the above error when I click on any of the topics.
I contacted Apple Support, but they just told me that some customers, who use a Satellite ISP, have this issue, but they could not help me resolve the issue. Note, that I don't have any other problems accessing the Internet or downloading or purchasing items.
Has anyone else experienced this error?
If so, were you able to work around it?
If so, what did you do to resolve the problem?
Thanks,
Bev in TX

As an alternative work around, you might go to Apple Support and ask the topic there to find the help answers.

Thanks for the suggestion :-).
I appear to have forgotten to list the error message:
==========================
The selected topic is currently unavailable
Make sure you're connected to the Internet. For help connecting, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click Network, and click "Assist me."
If you're connected to the Internet, and the content still doesn't appear, try again later
===========================
I searched & posted on the Apple support forums before calling support; there was only one, unhelpful reply, which is why I ended up calling.
BTW, support said that everything is dynamic (constantly changing), so that I cannot download the support files to my MP. Their only suggestion was to search help topics on Apple's support pages, which I was already doing.
I searched the Internet this time (not just Apple) and found the following on Mac Forums:
http://www.mac-forums.com/forums/internet-networking-wireless/281163-mountain-lion-help-center-not-working.html
(OR: http://tinyurl.com/crgjpjh )
If the above is true, then t appears that, as of this time, there is no help available for those who are using a Satellite ISP and encounter this problem.

Howdy.
There is a way to reset the Help system. Probably with a Terminal
command.
Several maintenance programs can also reset the Help system. I don't
know if it would solve the problem but is worth a try.
The free OnyX maintenance utility has a Help reset command. You can
download and install and use OnyX for no charge.
Check at MacUpdates.com and search for OnyX.
I occasionally do a Help reset and find that it speeds up Help's
response time nicely.

I'm taking my Macbook to the Apple Store this afternoon to have work performed on the trackpad - queer mouse behavior.
I'd like to do as much to secure any private information as possible. For example, I'd like to password protect the entire Documents folder. Perhaps prevent Safari and Mail and Keychain from being opened. There's a fair bit of personal sensitive data throughout.
Any suggestions?
2008 Macbook running Lion.
TIA, Roger

Settings, Security, Filevault... turn it on. Make sure you are using a good user password.
That said, you would be using Apple technology to protect your data from experience Apple techs. Certainly not ideal, but I'm assuming you are not protecting government or corporate secrets, in which case you might want to consider third party encryption software.
Another option would be to temporarily remove the data. Make sure you have a good Time Machine backup first. Then copy everything you want to protect to *another* drive. Now trash that data on your laptop and "secure" empty the trash (hold down the Command key). This has the advantage that it leaves no evidence that you had anything to hide in the first place.
Cheers,

Secure empty trash take a lot longer than normal empty trash. I would select only parts to securely empty.
For future use, create encrypted disk image and place your private stuff in that. Then it won't be an issue next time it goes in for service. Just make a back up copy or clone before you send it in .

Or you may not have enough room on your iPad for the updates. Usually for me, if the issue is that I need to update via wi-fi, it tells me that. But I just had Ken's problem where nothing happened--no message--when I tried to update, and then finally after a few weeks of alternately ignoring it and trying it, I finally got the message that there was not enough room on my phone to install the update.

In checking out a problem wherein I couldn't delete a draft from Mail, I noticed that clicking on the Airport icon in the top menu shows 'Wi-Fi39; as grayed out, and has the message "Looking for Networks" after it. If I open Network Preferences, it shows I am connected to my home network.
There is also a network shown in the drop-down menu under the Airport icon which I don't recognize as one I created, although I may have done so at some time in the past and don't remember it.
Please note that the Mail problem I was trying to fix was fixed by a restart, but neither a restart or shutdown has changed the network issue. Turning off WiFi and resuming it also has changed nothing.
Computer is a 21", 2012 iMac running OSX 10.8.2 and is connected to the internet via a ComCast Xfinity cable modem and Airport Extreme.
Any suggestions as to why this problem exists? (I'm assuming, of course, that the continuous search for networks is not normal.)
Thanks,

Well a post in the Apple Forums indicates that this effect is normal. Apparently clicking on the menu bar icon tells Airport you want to find another network, so it starts looking, while if you don't click on the icon it doesn't look. That doesn't seem intuitive to me, but then Apple didn't ask me if it was. ;-)

I was just about to write the same question to this group, Michel. I really
like Google Reader because of the ability to organize, sort, rename, etc.
all in one place, with easy viewing of those items which have been read, or
the new unread items. When searching for reader apps today, I noticed
several tout being synced to Google Reader. So it makes me hesitant to look
at them.
Hope someone can suggest a good reader which is not synced to google reader.

Hey everyone! I have been combing the files for messages on how to partition an external hard drive. I am wondering how to determine how much space to give to each section. Here's what I have:
Glyph 2TB; Super Duper; Time Machine
500 GB MacbookPro (37.74 GB Audio, 145.05 GB Movies, 19.68 GB, 11.65 GB Apps, 140.82 GB Other)
I have run the Super Duper only once on last weekend and have never used TimeMachine. The movies are mostly iMovie or FinalCut projects that my daughter worked on a couple of years back. I only own one external hard drive.
Herein lies my question(s):
1. Can I do incremental backups with TimeMachine for the daily tasks/projects that I work on without somehow messing up the SuperDuper backups? Will I need to reformat the drive in order to partition it?
2. How much space would you recommend I allocate for SD & how much for TM? Can I have a third partition for photos/videos/etc?
3. Can I move these movie projects to the external and erase them from my internal hd?
4. There are 5 users on my computer for the time being, is that what the "other" category is allocating space to?
I did purchase Super Duper so that I can schedule a weekly backup on Friday nights. I am new to all of this, so I appreciate you sending me the Kindergarten version of answers (or the link that I couldn't find on the group site). Thanks much everyone!
