Your accounting above adds up to 354.94 GB on a 500 GB drive. SD probably should get a 500 GB partition, unless you want to give it TWO partitions and alternate backups between them.

TM should get at LEAST 1.5 times the space of the data being backed up, and preferably 2-2.5 times.

Yes.

No.
[These 2 answers are from my understanding of how it works, but I personally have always had TM and SD backing up to separate partitions.]

Yes.

I have a 2 TB external with two 500 GB SD partitions, a 700 GB TM partition, and a "Spare" partition for stuff like those movie projects (in my case, older photos).

Depending on how much movie data you have, you might be able to backup on the same external but you don't need a partition for this. Actually, you only need a distinct partition for the SD backup if you want it to be a bootable clone. You can create a "backup" on a shared partition. A Time Machine partition can contain other data, though this reduces space for Time Machine. Time Machine data is isolated in a folder. Generally this is not recommended as a normal practice, but this is not for technical reasons. I have at times placed full backups on my TM drive.

Just to explain the Time Machine space issue a bit more. Time Machine will use as much (or as little) as you give it. You need a minimum of 1.5 times the source drive for it to work, but that will only give you a full backup with limited "incremental" detail. The more space time machine has, the greater it's ability to roll farther back in time in greater detail. The backup drive on my laptop is three times the size of the source drive. With that ratio, I can go back about 1.5 years with snapshots about twice a month. That's a lot. It depends on what kind of files you make and delete though. For instance, if you create 100GB of temp movie files and Time Machine backs these up, Time Machine will keep these in your backups. If you do this type of work a lot, Time Machine could get jammed with movie files quickly.

I am a video editor. I do NOT permit Time Machine to backup my working drives for precisely this reason. It would be entirely impractical.

Cheers,
tod

No suggestions here, but...
It sounds as if you are feeling about as paranoid as I do when I have to leave my MBP with Apple.
That said, I have certainly never encountered, nor even heard of, "client security dishonesty" with machines left with Apple for servicing.

AND CAREFULLY RECORD THAT PASSWORD FOR FUTURE REFERENCE, ELSE YOU'RE REALLY SCREWED LATER....

Apple has released Mountain Lion 10.8.3, recommended for everyone running ML. Here's what it includes:
The ability to redeem iTunes gift cards in the Mac App Store using your Mac's built-in camera
Boot Camp support for installing Windows 8
Boot Camp support for Macs with a 3TB hard drive
A fix for an issue that could cause a file URL to quit apps unexpectedly
A fix for an issue that may cause Logic Pro to become unresponsive when using certain plug-ins
A fix for an issue that may cause audio to stutter on 2011 iMacs
Includes Safari 6.0.3
I'm currently downloading it.

Dan,

Thanks for the suggestion. I downloaded OnyX, ran it and reset my Help system. Unfortunately, that did not solve the problem.

I moved my stuff to feedly with no problem. My only gripe so far is that you can't sort by date. I'd rather see older items first. Hope they'll add that to their settings in the future.
