I have the weirdest problem with Safari (v6.0.2). Most of the time it won't quit and I have to force quit it. It will quit properly the first time I open it after I have rebooted my machine, but the second time and thereafter (most of the time), it refuses to quit. It just hangs, showing the SPOD. I have let it run all night and it still wouldn't quit. The next morning the SPOD was still working. I don't have this problem with any other app. I have no clue as to why this is happening.
I'm running OS x 10.8.2 on a 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 iMac I have two other machines running 10.8.2 with Safari 6.0.2 that do not have this problem. They basically are running clones of my main computer - not totally, but close. The Safari extensions and plug-ins are the same on all the machines.
I have these extensions active: Incognito, Ghostery, AdBlock, Videobox, Youtube5, DivX Plus Web Player HTML5, and WOT.
The following plugins are installed: Browser Plus (from Yahoo), DivX Web Player, DivX VOD Helper Plug-in, Flip4Mac Windows Media, Garmin Communicator , Glims, Google Earth , Google Talk, Google Talk Video Accelerator, Google Talk Video Renderer, iPhotocast, Java Applet n, Musicnotes, PDF Browser Plugin 2.4.4, Picasa, QuickTime Plug-in 7.7.1, Shockwave Flash, Shockwave for Director, Sibelius Scorch, Silverlight, and WebKit built-in PDF.
I have run Diskwarrior, Disk Repair, reset permissions and ACLs, and reset Safari to no avail. I have even reinstalled the OS.
Any ideas out there?

Shut off all applications except Finder. Open Applications/Utilities/Console. What is it saying is happening the moment you chose Shut Down? Something will be reported as erring.

I presume you meant to shut off a all apps except Safari and Finder. I also presume you meant shut down Safari. That being said, I did that and found a Safari hang report among the system diagnostic reports in Console. The problem is, there are about x 1000 lines of data. What am I looking for?
I saw launchd and dyld coming up a number of times, so I rebuilt LaunchServices and dyld's shared cache with Oynx. That seemed to work until I tried to quit Safari after two successful quits; however, it hung on the third try.

What was the console readout at the moment Safari hung? The console reports are timed.

The hang report is 426k. That's a lot of text. The the entire hang report appeared the second Safari was force quit. Do you want me to send you the report off-list?

Yes. I think you can click beneath my name in the list. Since Safari is a free download, you might download the safari app first from apple, then trash the present safari app. better if you use AppZapper, but ok if not. Empty trash, then reinstall safari and see if it helps.

At our local newspaper, the photogs and page designers all use Macs, the writers use PCs.

Randy,
I'm interested in what all the roadblocks are to corporate use of Macs. It sounds like you're saying there's more than software and hardware cost in keeping Macs out of the mainstream corp. office?
Thanks,
Dave

Another issue is manageability - Windows combined with a Windows Server
give you Domain/Forest (Active Directory, Group Policy, etc). A Mac can
certainly be connected to a Windows Server but the managing (adding /
removing network shares, resetting passwords, etc) is much more labor
intensive. There is software that attempts to bring some features of a
Domain but it just becomes another thing to manage. Most businesses will
not avoid Macs because they are a little more expensive to buy but they
don't want the burden of maintaining them unless it benefits the company in
some way. Most office computers are task specific so the end users
experience or opinion of the experience is generally irrelevant.
As far as software it isn't even close in Mac verses PC but as more and
more becomes web based that will become less relevant.

Thanks Dane for your perspective. That helps fill out the "why" of PCs in the corporate world nicely.

If you can't write DL, then you are stuck w Blu-Ray disk burning. That I thought was overkill. Maybe I am short sided. Maybe I would be using floppies still. Naw. :)

Sorry, I should have been more clear. The problem I encountered was, with
the old firmware, the drive would not burn *Blu-Ray* DL, TL or QL media. It
still burned DVD DL media.

What experience do any of you have with a word processing program for the iPad? How about Pages? Can it open a MS Word Document? Any suggestions are welcome. I don't expect to do complicated stuff that I would have to do on my Mac, but being able to open files and make minor changes would be helpful, if that is possible.
Joan in Vermont where I mis-wrote about winter hanging on, today is T-shrit weather (while south of us they had a foot of snow yesterday - curiouser and curioser)

Yes, Pages can open Word docs, and also export in Word format.
You should find this worth a read.

(Each of these programs can read, edit, and create Microsoft Word documents on your iPad. Note that none of them have all the functionality of Word on your Macintosh [as you might expect as the iPad is not as powerful as a Mac.] e.g. Things like footnotes may not show up, or may be formatted unusually.)
OfficeSquared/
http://www.bytesqua
http://www.bytesqua
https://itunes.
(can handle Word footnotes)
Docs to Go/Premium $17

QuickOffice/
(now owned by Google)
http://www.quickoff
https://itunes.
Pages $10
https://itunes.
CloudOn (free...for now)
http://site.
(I highly recommend checking this out!)
OnLive (free to $10/month)
http://desktop.
And, if you don't mind doing your Word processing in the Cloud from your iPad's browser, there is now a cloud-based version of Microsoft Office:
