I was thinking of using ooVoo as a video chat program and while downloading, it calls for Java RunRuntime and I've seen a lot of discussion about Java programs. I want to make sure I don't download something that will cause problems if I can help it.
Is this a problem with Mac or is it probably safe? I have one iMac with Lion and one with Mt. Lion. I hope I was clear with my question, I am not a techie, just a very old guy who loves to use the computer!

Hints building for new MacPro Tower major upgrade.
OWC is talking about it in their newsletter.
A bunch of current tower models were put on sale at a major discount
and all sold out - even back orders no longer available.
MacPro sales in parts of European Union ended.
Leaks abound of new video card code for high-end PCIe cards included in
developer releases of next iteration of Mac OS X 10.8 M Lion.
Tim Cook responded to a frustrated MacPro user several months ago
saying that Apple would have a surprise in 2013 for that topic.

hello group,
i am wondering which printers group members are happiest with. my 7
year old canon pixma is acting up, so time for a newer machine. my
knowledge of printers is limited.
most of my printing is black and white text documents, with
occasional color/pictures. a long-lived machine with economical ink
costs is what i am interested. the duplex printing option is
important. my budget is $350.00.
thank you for your ideas.

If, as you say, MOST of your printing is B&W with an +occasional+ color print, I would suggest not getting a color inkjet printer. I would get a B&W only laser printer, and have the occasional color print done at a service, or at the drugstore if it's a photo. A B&W laser printer uses long-lasting toner carts instead of ink, it's +extremely+ inexpensive to operate, and it prints faster. Also, for the price, you would, probably, be getting a higher-quality printer. The drugstore photo prints will be better, too.

I would suggest that, if you do decide on getting a laser B&W printer, you get a Brother printer. I bought one (a 5150D) about ten years ago and it has been trouble-free.

Forget HP. Get Canon. A cheap one at Walmart was <$30. You could replace the printer when you run out of ink, not the ink cartridge :)

OTOH I've been very happy with my duplex-printing color HP Laserjets over
several years. The color is there when I want it -- I rarely even approach
needing "photo" quality but it's nice to have a touch of color or an
"inferior" color pic when wanted. The toner doesn't dry out the way ink
cartridges did when I didn't use them often enough. My color toner
cartridges last me a couple of years or longer but are ready to go anytime.
I'm on a PC, not a Mac.

Right, you are a PC user. HP lies to Mac users.
Their techs said their drivers are compatible for weeks.
They aren't. Bought a Canon and never looked back.

For about $250 you can get an excellent color inkjet *and* an excellent black and white laser printer and have the best of both worlds.
I recommend these models:
Black and white laser:
Brother HL-5450DN
1200dpi
40ppm
128MB RAM
Postscript emulation
Duplexing
AirPrint
Ethernet or USB
Accepts an 8,000 page high capacity toner cartridge
http://www.brother-
$133 with free shipping
<http://www.pcnation
Color inkjet:
Canon Pixma IP3600
Has their 5 cartridge system for excellent true blacks and dynamite photo-quality prints (DO NOT get a cheap Canon inkjet at WalMart. These are a really low quality models built to a price-point with a single color ink cartridge.)
Reviews:
http://is.gd/
$104
http://www.sears.
Plus...I can tell you where to get third party ink cartridges that are indistinguishable from the OEM cartridges, but which are a fraction of the price!

HP at one time was very friendly and compatible to the Mac OS. They even made the Apple printers.
But that was many years ago, and I guess that I am a slow learner sometimes. When I bought an HP LaserJet P1006 in 2009, they had not released a workable installer for the current version of OS X.
I figured out a work around for the installer and got it up and running. It was almost a year before HP fixed the installer. It was a very, very simple fix, but they seem to still be slow to update the software.

I'm on my 4th (I think) Canon inkjet, a Pixma iP3500. That should
tell you my opinion of Canon printers! One feature to look for in a
color inkjet, and most Canons have it: Separate ink tanks for the
different colors. If you have a single multicolor tank and one color

As Randy has often pointed out, Brother has been very good about
supplying OS X drivers for their printers.
I'm on my 4th (I think) Canon inkjet, a Pixma iP3500. That should
tell you my opinion of Canon printers! One feature to look for in a
color inkjet, and most Canons have it: Separate ink tanks for the
different colors. If you have a single multicolor tank and one color
runs out, you have to pitch the entire tank.

Looks like my Canon iP5000 has finally died. I like it very much and would like to replace it with a printer with similar features. Ideally it would use the same ink cartridges as my iP5000 as I still have a few of those, probably worth more than the cost of a new printer.
I'm not interested in a multi-purpose unit, but some other features--like maybe wireless printing--would be nice.
Any ideas?
Thanks!
Best,
Jim
