Howdy.

I used it yesterday for the first time. Still very new.

I'm not sure about how to search for a podcast that might be on the
iTunes Store (yet?).

I have a long podcast set of episodes (about 180) on my iTunes Program
on Macintosh and have been downloading them to iPad about 5 episodes at
a time. They seem to form a single entity in Podcasts that when you
click it expands to show all of the episodes synced to iPad.

Podcasts also shows episodes already played which my Music app on iPad
didn't do so that's a nice improvement.

Howdy.

There are a lot of used Mac dealers. Note that Macintosh tends to hold
it's used value at a higher level than PeeCee/Windows computers.

These are some of the dealers I've had at least some kind of contact
with.

You can also check the usual eBay.

Apple's "refurbished" Macs tend to be more expensive but also tend to
work, have a warranty, and have a period of tech support and as such
are worth considering.

Mountain Lion (system due out this month).

If you currently have a 12 year old G4, then if you intend to use the
current monitor you have, you need to investigate the video connector
plug and socket type for your older monitor and what you need for a
Mac Mini. You might need to get a video adapter plug.

1. I would suggest you get the most recent version.
The *earliest* version to consider is the "Mid-2007" model, Macmini2,1 -- Model Number A1176. This is the first model that will run Lion. You will probably want to get a trackpad to use with Lion. A mouse works, but when you have learned the trackpad, it is pretty slick.

2. The most recent models are easier to upgrade RAM or hard drive than earlier models.

3. <http://lowendmac.com/deals/best-mac-mini-prices.html>

4. Apple's refurbished store sells like-new models at a significant discount, fully warranted. Unfortunately, when I checked just now, they didn't list any Minis.

Interesting that this morning's Hartford Courant carried an article on the possibility of tens of thousands of computers losing internet service in Monday that contained the following sentence:

"There are various ways to test your computer for the DNS Changer Malware, but it's key to note that this applies only to Windows users, so if your computer has an Apple logo with a bite taken out of it, you're fine."

That's funny — I thought we were advised to check our Macs for this many weeks ago. Has it since been determined that Macs are not susceptible to this after all?

I had read that this virus affects both PC's and Mac's - a fake codec of
some sort that must be installed is used to infect both operating systems.

A few weeks ago or more the flashback was all te rage.

NEVER use the mainstream press for any sort of advice with regard to
your Macintosh. They usually get things wrong, and they often
outright lie.

The DNSChanger Trojan Horse can and did infect Macs...years ago. It
is also known as RSPlug or Jahlav.
http://www.reedcorner.net/guides/macvirus/malware_catalog.php

There are articles being published saying that "the FBI is shutting
down the temporary DNS server for those who were previously infected
with the DNS Changer Trojan." That is, if you were infected years
ago, supposedly your Mac will stop working after Friday.

The easiest way to check if your system is infected by the DNS
Changer malware is to go to one of the "are you infected sites"
http://www.dcwg.org/detect/checking-osx-for-infections/

This one shows whether your computer is infected for those located in
the U.S.. Green is good.
http://www.dns-ok.us/

(My guess is that not a single person here will find that they were
infected. I posted about this to my 9,000+ users in my user group,
and not a single person reported being infected.)

Note: Users running OS X 10.6 or later are protected from this Trojan
by Quarantine.

All good info and advice Randy, but my concern was with those many Mac
users out there who don't check in here (for example). They just use
their machine day after day and expect it to work, and probably get
most of their computer info by rumor or from the mainstream press
(which is worse). For the few who have this malware one of the simple
checks would find it. Telling them to ignore the warning could cause
them problems. Also, there are even quite a few members of this list
running an OS version earlier than 10.6.

It's just a matter of inaccurate reporting that "gets my goat."

I could go on a rant about the mainstream press for hours. My basic
take on that is that just about everything that you read in the
newspapers is somehow inaccurate at best, and way too often it is a
big lie. This isn't a political viewpoint, by the way, the press
lies about *everything* as a matter of course, not just political
stuff, mostly for the purpose of sensationalizing things to sell papers.

Back to the matter at hand...

Very, very few Mac users were infected by DNS Changer. DNS Changer
did some things back when it was an active piece of malware (that is,
almost 5 years ago) that generally drew attention to the fact that
the user was infected, and generally those few who were infected back
then have long since done what was necessary to fix things.

I suspect that only a tiny number of Mac users will experience any
problems come Monday (assuming that the entire story about the FBI
and their substitute DNS server is even true), and those few users,
at worst, will find themselves without Web access, which isn't that
big a deal. Those folks will probably either call AppleCare, or they
will go to talk to a Genius at an Apple Store, or they will call
their ISP, and any one of those will direct them to check their DNS
settings and help them to set things up so that things work again.

It is important to realize though, that keeping your OS upgraded to
the latest version of OS X (or, at least, the latest version of OS X
that your Mac can run) is how Apple (and other personal computer
manufacturers) primarily update you to the latest in security. I
know that folks have reasons to stick with older OS's (I do this
myself), but you need to realize that Apple doesn't support older
OS's beyond a certain amount of time, and they aren't taking
responsibility for your safety from malware if you decide to hold
back...you are.

Interesting article in the New York Times:

> Despite the storms that have swept through financial markets over the last year, the overall stock market in the United States actually managed to eke out some gains. In fact, the market value of all stocks in the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index increased by $282 billion in the 12 months through June.

> There's a catch, though: One stock alone accounts for the overwhelming bulk of that increase. In fact, of that $282 billion, some 83 percent of it comes from gains in shares of Apple Inc., now the highest-valued company in the world.

I used to have a contextual menu with the above command, but it is no longer there. Have I not used this since Leopard or earlier, or have I somehow removed this command? Or was this an applescript I had added? But I know it was a contextual menu item.

I've tried to find help online, in the various Mac web sites and from Apple support. I've tried a laser lens cleaner. Nothing has helped.
I put in a music or data disk; the drive makes various clicking noises, then ejects the disk. But not all disks: those I burned on Windows machines appear on the desktop and can be opened as normal.
