Sony “unveils” its next-generation gaming console, the PlayStation 4 Posted: 20 Feb 2013 05:56 PM PST After months of teaser videos, and years of speculation, Sony has just unveiled its next-generation gaming console, the Playstation 4, at its “See the Future” event in New York City. That’s right, it’s supercharged, it’s intuitive, it’s social, and it’s finally here. This might seem a bit off topic for iDB, but with growing rumors that Apple’s looking to add apps and games to its set-top box, you don’t have to work very hard to create the connection. Not to mention, we love games too. So without further a do, here’s the PS4…(...) "Sony “unveils” its next-generation gaming console, the PlayStation 4" is an article by iDownloadBlog.com. |
Netflix gives its iOS app better playback controls Posted: 20 Feb 2013 05:32 PM PST Netflix has a pretty decent app on the iOS platform that really becomes indispensable if you’re among the growing number of people subscribed to its service that streams Hollywood movies and television shows to your home. Today, the company has issued a new version 3.0 build of the iOS app, tweaking the user interface while adding a few improvements. For starters, the zoom icon is back so you can control your experience when in full screen. And if you’re on an iPad, you can also touch the player UI screen to see the title of the currently watched show…(...) Apple and Google app stores are nearing saturation point Posted: 20 Feb 2013 04:59 PM PST Making it big in mobile apps is getting tougher. That’s the finding from a company which researched how many new developers reach the top level at either Apple’s iOS App Store or Android’s Google Play. In fact, just two percent of first-time App Store developers enter the top 250 list of publishers while only slightly more – three percent – reach that level at Google Play. As a result, three times as many “newcomers” to the app game publish for Google Play than the iOS App Store. According to analytics firm Distimo on average six Android apps are published for every two Apple titles. And the news doesn’t get much better for newbie app developers hoping to cash-in at either app store…(...) Strategy Analytics: iPhone 5/4S are world’s two most popular smartphones Posted: 20 Feb 2013 04:09 PM PST Just as investors are (again) punishing the Apple stock on talk of Foxconn freezing recruitment in China amid weakening iPhone 5 demand (or perhaps because the iPhone 5S is entering production in March?) comes a new survey of the smartphone market by research firm Strategy Analytics. And the numbers look good: the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S each outsold Samsung’s Galaxy S III during the all-important 2012 holiday quarter. This makes the iPhone 5 the world’s bestselling smartphone, but what’s really eyebrow-raising is that the 16-month old (and now discounted) iPhone 4S also overtook Samsung’s flagship device…(...) Real-life footage shows what it’s like wearing Google Glass Posted: 20 Feb 2013 03:58 PM PST With speculation of Apple’s growing interest in wearable computing and a smartwatch-like gadget the company’s reportedly working on, it’s worth remembering Google entered the space in a big way with last year’s astonishing on-stage demonstration of its Android-driven augmented-reality eyewear, Google Glass. One of CEO Larry Page’s moonshot projects, the Glass is still in its infancy, but watchers predict it will become the next big thing in wearable computing. While only Google developers are allowed to buy the $1,500 sci-fi eyewear, Google is working on mainstreaming the technology in order to get even more people use its services all the time. And in doing so, the search Goliath has released new footage showing what it actually feels wearing the Glass. In case you were wondering, everything you see has been captured through the Glass…(...) Apple hires Rolls Royce director to bolster European corporate communications Posted: 20 Feb 2013 02:51 PM PST Less than two weeks after recruiting OLED display expert Dr. Jeung Jil Lee from LG, Apple has hired another high-profile executive away from a major company. According to a new report, the Mac-maker has picked up Rolls Royce’s Josh Rosenstock. Rosenstock has been with the London-based aerospace firm for 4 years, as the director of external communications. It’s believed that he will join Apple in a similar role, as it attempts to bolster its corporate communications for its EMEIA region…(...) How to enable HDR Camera mode on iPad, and iPod touch 4G Posted: 20 Feb 2013 02:06 PM PST HDR is a photography mode that stitches together several pictures along a range of exposure settings. Using various algorithms, the effect creates pictures that can have fewer dark or washed out spots than a conventional digital still, which is great if you intend to capture textures and detail instead of glare or shadow. Apple introduced HDR photography to iOS 4.1, but the feature wasn’t rolled out to every device. The devices that currently lack the option to enable HDR in the stock camera app include the iPod touch 4G, iPad mini, and the iPad 2 to the iPad 4. Lucky for us, this disabled feature is fairly easy to manually reintroduce on a jailbroken device…(...) New iWatch concept takes a more traditional approach Posted: 20 Feb 2013 01:30 PM PST As reports claiming that Apple is working on a wristwatch-like device continue to swirl, and subsequent speculation grows, concept artists have taken to their digital palettes to create their own versions of the so-called ‘iWatch.’ We’ve already seen a handful of these Apple-watch mockups—most of which feature curved glass displays and futuristic designs. But today, we’ve come across a concept that takes a far more traditional wristwatch approach…(...) "New iWatch concept takes a more traditional approach" is an article by iDownloadBlog.com. |
How Eastern European attackers hacked Apple Posted: 20 Feb 2013 01:25 PM PST Investigators now believe a group of sophisticated Eastern European criminal hackers are responsible for a cyberattack on Apple and other U.S. technology and media firms. Until today, those probing the computer break-ins thought China was behind the electronic assaults. In Apple’s case, malware placed on an iPhone developer website may have been used to ‘bait’ visitors, according to one report Wednesday. According to Bloomberg, which anonymously cited people close to law enforcement, malware which other victims described as “sophisticated,” was placed on the popular developer forum to potentially gain access to data stored on corporate computers…(...) Graphics powerhouse Nvidia has thrown down the gauntlet by announcing Wednesday a state of the art new HQ. Covering one million square feet, the massive site will be comprised of two triangle-shaped buildings with a distinct feature: a nearly translucent glass roof. Part of its campus expansion in Santa Clara, Nvidia describes the upcoming headquarters in Apple’s parlance, as "iconic"…(...) Apple chairman Art Levinson talks life after Steve, product creation and more Posted: 20 Feb 2013 10:52 AM PST Arthur D. Levinson, former CEO of Genentech and current chairman of Apple’s board, spoke at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business on Tuesday. Art talked openly about a number if interesting topics, and luckily, Fortune was around to write it all down. Levinson joined Apple’s board in 2000, and was a colleague and close friend to Apple’s legendary founder Steve Jobs. And he says that despite the fact that the company continues to introduce new products, Jobs’s absence still remains tough to ignore…(...) Microsoft CEO goes on defensive, says the Surface is ‘a real business’ Posted: 20 Feb 2013 10:05 AM PST Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer recently addressed the companies Surface and the tablet’s sales (or lack thereof). We’re going to try our best not to characterize his comments as whiny or envision the firm’s leader stomping his foot in the face of gloomy analysis. But it’s hard – real hard. Speaking with MIT Technology Review, while admitting the Microsoft product was not an iPad-killer, Ballmer stressed the Surface isn’t a post-PC fantasy, either…(...) Spotify and record labels in talks over free streaming on mobile devices Posted: 20 Feb 2013 09:47 AM PST I get literally 90+ percent of my digital music through Spotify. Just ten bucks a month buys me unlimited, high-quality, ad-free streaming. Apple’s à la carte iTunes downloads just don’t stand a chance. But Spotify isn’t the juggernaut of Apple’s calibre so no wonder record labels have limited free streaming to computers and notebooks. That could change now as the Swedish startup is reportedly in talks with content owners over extending free streaming to smartphones and tablets like iPads and iPhones…(...) Posted: 20 Feb 2013 08:51 AM PST In the speeded up world I’m increasingly finding myself listening to audiobooks because I just don’t have the time for long reads. Besides, reading is rarely a background activity. That’s what I love about spoken word: it saves time. I can enjoy my audiobooks while jogging, cooking, commuting and what not. Heck, I sometimes even listen to audiobooks while I simultaneously blog about technology. Amazon-owned Audible sells some awesome digital audiobooks, radio and TV programs and today they’ve finally launched an iPad app. And let me tell you, it’s been a worthwhile wait. Of course, the Newark-based company has had an iPhone app in the App Store since July 2010. That piece of software, too, has received a major refresh today, bringing out a revamped interface, quick sign ups / sign ins and other tidbits…(...) Jony Ive on Apple product naming, David Beckham connection Posted: 20 Feb 2013 06:51 AM PST Apple’s London-born VP of Industrial Design Jonathan Ive was last week honored with the greatest accolade in United Kingdom's children TV, BBC's Blue Peter programme. BBC's Barney Harwood briefly interviewed Ive on his design work and journalist and recording engineer Tom Davenport has posted a video where Ive discusses how product naming philosophy can affect the design process. And as 9to5Mac noted, Ive also reveals a little known connection to David Beckham. Another video right after the break…(...) AAPL falls on talk of Foxconn hiring freeze Posted: 20 Feb 2013 05:46 AM PST Shares of Apple are (again) under pressure as Financial Times issued a report Wednesday that Foxconn, the world’s largest contract manufacturer that assembles iPhones and other products for Apple and other tech giants, is putting a freeze on recruitment in China as it slows production of the iPhone 5. It wasn’t clear whether Foxconn winding down iPhone manufacturing means that Apple is getting ready to produce a next-gen iPhone or that iPhone 5 demand is falling amid fierce competition in the smartphone market, but investors are already punishing the stock which fell in pre-market trading to under $460, even with a Foxconn spokesperson clarifying that the decision wasn't related to iPhone 5 production as more employees returned from the Chinese New Year break than a year earlier…(...) Tweetbot for iOS and Mac updated to comply with Twitter’s API changes Posted: 20 Feb 2013 04:00 AM PST As many of you may know, Twitter announced a lengthy list of changes to its API used by third party clients last fall. The deadline for developers to meet the new requirements is March 5th, and apps that don’t comply will cease functioning. As such, the Tapbots team has updated both its iOS and Mac Tweetbot apps today to adhere to the new API changes. Most of the them are under the hood, but you will notice some UI differences. We’ve got the full change logs after the fold…(...) "Tweetbot for iOS and Mac updated to comply with Twitter’s API changes" is an article by iDownloadBlog.com. |
‘Enable Copy text in Facebook’ makes using the official Facebook app less frustrating Posted: 20 Feb 2013 03:32 AM PST Have you ever had to jump through hoops to log into a desktop website because an app won’t let you copy the text on your phone? This should never happen, but for some unfathomable reason, major services like Facebook do not allow for copying text in-app (the Facebook app currently allows users to copy text from messages and comments, but not from status updates or posts). Luckily you can get rid of the annoyance, even if Facebook won’t fix the issue themselves. ‘Enable Copy text in Facebook’ is a tweak that allows jailbroken iOS devices to capture the text directly from Facebook posts themselves…(...)
