In my opinion, repairing Permissions is the current SCSI voodoo, it is worthless for fixing things. I haven't done it since OS X 10.1 in 2001. You can repair them until you are blue in the face and they will continue to revert.

If you have not been following tech news lately, Java on web browsers is a security flaw. I have minimized the apps that use Java on my Macs to go one step further. If you have many JavaVirtual Machines on your Mac, they you have not.

You did not tell us what Mac you are running, but 10.6, Snow Leopard is a stable OS. I would look for some other cause of the problems. Freezes and crashes, not enough RAM or a failing stick. Other hardware causes. Not enough free memory, the hard drive, not RAM.

But the "? file folder" tells me that your hard drive is failing. Make a clone of the drive or back up your data, TODAY! Then take it in to have the hard drive tested to confirm it is failing and replaced.

Since I installed Snow Leopard [last summer] my computer has been having problems - screen-freezes and crashing.

When I run disk utility, I come up with over 100 repair permissions listed. Many are JavaVirtualMachines or SystemLibraryCoreServices. I'm now having problems with rebooting/gray screens, beach balls, ?file folders. Is this an at home fix, over-the-phone to Apple, or does my computer need to be serviced?

Yes, indeed. You can set up any number of tasks and schedule them to run
when you choose. Having chosen your Source and Destination, click on
Schedule Task at the bottom of the window. Lots of info here

You can download as a PDF too.

Yes, they can and, unlike TM, you can choose the time and frequency.

Just want to point out that if you buy SuperDuper you can also back up specific files on a schedule, using File menu, "Copy Script" and choose what you want to back up or ignore.

Thanks for your relies.
I did not realize Carbon Copy Cloner had the ability to schedule tasks. I have used it for years to keep a clone of my OS drive.
I have several Terabytes backed up on BACKBLAZE but need my work all back-up locally just in case.

Thanks

Call AppleCare, they should be able to direct you to where in Apple you can buy a copy of SL. It was a $29 disc.

Tiger on the other hand was a $129 disc, but it sounds like you have that one.

Wow Dave,

Very precise info.Thank you. And yes the iMac AND the old G4'sees' the scanner, but ImageCapture and the does not. The original HP software keeps crashing when I try to access that way.

I'm told I need Rosetta to get this to work on Snow Leopard with either the old HP driver or VueScan but I don't have the disk to download it. Any oidea where I can obtain a copy? I've looked on line for days with out results.

Any ideas?

Again, thanx so much for the clear instructions.

It does seem that your scanner is supported by VueScan:

After installing Snow Leopard my cheap HP/printer/scanner refused to work. I spent several weeks talking with HP techs who guaranteed me that their drivers were compatible with SL. I eventually found it to be a lie. I purchased a $30 Canon Printer/scanner and it has worked first time and every system upgrade since. Using Mountain Lion and the Canon responds beautifully every time. But it's your choice. jr

I discovered the same thing with an HP all-in-one when I went to Snow Leopard. The scan functions did not work. So I bought a newer HP. Later, before I disposed of the old one, I learned about VueScan, and that did work well with the older HP. Frankly, I now prefer VueScan even with the newer one, so I use it. The HP drivers still don't work, but I can do it either through Preview or Image Capture or even from the PrefPane with the new one, but VueScan is nicer.
Since the old all-in-one did have problems with paper feeding I figured it was time to replace it anyway. Too bad, though, that my in-reserve cartridges would not work with the newer machine.

The MacPro has 2 SATA ports on logic board. You can use a SATA cable, about 15 inches long. It might need to have L shaped connector on logic board end due to snug space.

In the same vein, the tightly spaced USB connectors on my MacBook Pro are a problem for some Thumb Drives, especially the older ones with a "fat" case.

I bought a four-port USB Hub at Fry's for about $12 which completely solves the problem. Now I can use two or three Thumb Drives and a remote control dongle without any problem.

Recently, a friend sent me a bunch of photos on a thumb drive. It practically didn't even have a plastic enclosure. It was just a skinny little thing¡Kalmost just the thumb drive mechanism by itself.

Yes! The newer thumb drives are indeed skinny.

There are some that are even smaller than the one your website (above) shows.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/SanDisk+-+Cruzer+Fit+4GB+USB+Flash+Drive/3613442.p?id=1218420287479&skuId=3613442&st=/&cp=1&lp=5

This one (also a SanDisk) is so small that it can be left in the laptop when packing it in its case.
It is slightly larger than the USB connector. It is almost too small -- easy to lose.

I have a MacBook running OS 10.5.8, and I have an old Power Mac G4 tower. I
used to use the tower as a backup drive for a G5. Well, I gave the G5 and
Cinema Display away. I would like to use the MacBook as a monitor for the G4
so I can reinstall the OS on the G4 to wipe it. I plan to give it away once
I've done that.

I Googled "Connect MacBook to a Power Mac G4," and I found instructions on
eHow for using a FireWire cable to connect the MacBook and G4. With the G4
on, I turn on the MacBook while holding down the "T" key on the keyboard,
and the FireWire drive icon shows up on the MacBook desktop. But I can't see
the G4's drive. Obviously, I'm doing something wrong.

I'd appreciate any suggestions or ideas on how I can make this work.

Thanks.
