Thanks, Otto. I had not seen any article on the subject.

I was just going on how many things it was connected with, which is basically all media play, like audio, video, PDFs (iBook), text, not to mention connecting to iDevices, Apple TV and whatnot. For a Mac, it is not an add-on like iWorks or iLife, it is a major part and function of the OS and the interface to other devices

Actually, to *play* media, you need QuickTime, not iTunes (which uses QT),
and Preview to read PDFs, but the connecting business is another matter as
you say.

Go dig around Apple Support with the search term of "screen sharing". I assume you want to run the G4 "headless"; or with no monitor.

I use that between my MBP early 2008 running 10.7.5 and my G4 2002 running 10.5.8. There are limitations, mostly the OS on the G4. I don't think you should have a problem with 10.4 and beyond, but I don't remember. That is why I am suggesting you do the research. To transfer files you might need to connect also.

the G4's drive. Obviously, I'm doing something wrong.

I'd appreciate any suggestions or ideas on how I can make this work.

Thanks.

It is the Power Mac that needs to be in Target Disk Mode so it will appear
as an external drive on the MacBook. Do you have a keyboard so you can
start it up with the T key held down? The MacBook won't simply be a
"monitor", of course.

BTW to be secure you should do a Secure Erase of the Power Mac's drive
before reinstalling the OS.

You cannot use the Macbook as a straight up monitor nor is booting into
target mode going to help because even though the G4 could act as a drive
for the MacBook you will not be able to install a G4 compatible OS as the
computer will thinks it's an intel based computer. If you have a G4
computer that would work otherwise you'll need a monitor/

Are you sure the MacBook won't allow installation of a PPC OS on an
external drive or TDM Mac?

Actually I am not sure .. but I assume the installer detects what type
processor and installs appropriately ... there may be a way with one of the
OSes (Tiger or Leopard) that had versions for both processors but I doubt
it will install the G4/G5 version while you are booted up on an Intel
processor. Worth a try I guess and I would love to know if it works.

Thanks, Otto. Now I understand why it wasn't working. I can borrow the
keyboard that I gave away with the G5. I think that'll work.

I appreciate everyone's input.

I have one of those…at least, it looks like that. It came with a Bluetooth mouse I bought recently.

I like these. Only slightly larger, it's actually a microSD card-reader, so
you have more functionality.

Any software that still requires Rosetta to run clearly is not interesting in maintaining itself, and you would do yourself a favour in terms of future proofing by trying to move away from it.
