You can "daisy chain" firewire devices and most if not all devices have at
least two firewire ports. Out of 5 external drives only one has one FW
port and that is because it also has USB 2.0/3.0 and SATA ports...

Firewire is designed to be daisy-chained.

You can use a hub, but the results aren't always good.

No such thing exists.

Many devices have 2 or more FW ports on that allow you to daisychain
them; perhaps yours does?
As far as a hub goes, I'll wait for another post to answer that.

Hi Rob,
Choose "About this Mac" from the Apple menu. Then click on "More Info..." button.

In the window that opens in System Profiler, click USB in the left column (just above "Network".

The top half of the screen that display is titled "USB Device Tree". Can you see anything there that describes your scanner? *

* If "yes", then it's a software / driver issue. Launch Image Capture (ships with 10.6) and see if your scanner shows up in the left column under "Devices". If yes, you should be able to use Image Capture to scan. As a replacement, VueScan is widely hailed (including the Mac Support Central group) as a great universal scanning application. It does seem that your scanner is supported by VueScan:

http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/hp_scanjet_3970.html

* If "no", your scanner, power adapter (does it use a "brick" power supply, or just a plain power cable to the outlet?), or USB cable (you tried another one, yes?) are defective. Try different ones of the cables & the supply/adapter (pay close attention to the voltage & current ratings and the plug polarity of the replacement).

Good luck!

Dave

JPG files and other images are embedded as part of the PDF document and
are not attached, thus not detachable.
Here are some options for you:

- You could "extract" this by enlarging the image part on your screen to
max area and grabbing a screen capture of just the image section you want.

- Alternately you can crop the PDF to the margins of the image, but that
only masks the image, does not change the architecture of the file.

- You can open the PDF in Photoshop, and make a new JPG

- You can open the PDF in Preview as you mentioned, select the image
area you want, crop it and save the resultant cropped image as a JPG
right from Preview.

I understand that the file is embedded but when I open the pdf file in Preview, you cannot see the file. Nor is there anywhere to click on something to make the file visible. The .pdf file is a quarterly lesson and you need the jpg file in order to do the lesson.

I ended up calling Apple support. I had to restart my Internet and change a few settings. I will keep your tip in mind for next time. It sounds easier and just might have worked. Thanks!
