Chitika: iOS 6 now accounts for 83% of all North American iOS traffic Posted: 13 Feb 2013 05:28 PM PST With Apple releasing iOS 6.1.1 earlier this week—just two weeks after releasing iOS 6.1—ad network Chitika wanted to take a look and see where iOS version distribution and adoption was at in terms of overall percentage of iOS traffic. To determine this, the firm’s analytical arm Chitika Insights took a sample of ad impressions from millions of US and Canadian iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users during a 24 hour period. And they found that over 80% are on iOS 6…(...) "Chitika: iOS 6 now accounts for 83% of all North American iOS traffic" is an article by iDownloadBlog.com. |
Rumor: 4.8-inch iPhone 6 arriving in summer 2014 Posted: 13 Feb 2013 05:25 PM PST Jeffries analyst Peter Misek is on a roll. First he wrote in a note issued to clients this morning that channel checks led him to believe that the iPhone 5S is entering production in March for a likely June/July introduction. Then word came that Misek thinks Apple could be holding a media event next month to announce a software development kit (SDK). The official SDK would enable programmers to write full-screen 1080p apps and games for the Apple TV set-top box. And now, we learn that Misek doesn’t see the 4.8-inch iPhone launching this year at all. Instead, Apple is looking to release a bigger iPhone in mid-2014, he writes…(...) FireCore updates aTV Flash (black) with support for Apple TV 5.2 Posted: 13 Feb 2013 05:20 PM PST Now that Apple TV 5.2 can be jailbroken via the new Seas0nPass, FireCore has updated its popular aTV Flash (black) software suite to support the new firmware. Apple released 5.2 at the end of last month alongside iOS 6.1. The aTV Flash (black) update, which brings the app to version 2.2, is fairly minor. But it does include several bug fixes, improvements to DVD playback, and of course, support for the new Bluetooth keyboard feature in 5.2…(...) Xbox founder says App Store on Apple TV would ‘kill’ gaming consoles Posted: 13 Feb 2013 05:10 PM PST Earlier today, Jeffries analyst Peter Misek told investors that Apple will hold a TV-related media event in March. And he suspects that the focus of the event will be the unveiling of a software development kit that will allow developers to finally make third-party apps for the Apple TV. Well if that’s really the case, major gaming consoles better watch out. In a recent blogpost rant entitled ‘Stupid, Stupid xBox!!’ Xbox founder Nat Brown says that if Apple opens up an App Store on the Apple TV, the platform would “simply kill” the Playstation, Xbox and the WiiU…(...) AppCap tweak limits and blocks distracting apps Posted: 13 Feb 2013 05:05 PM PST I’m not sure how I feel about digital commitment devices. On the one hand, I’d like to believe that if I really didn’t want to open Facebook on my phone during work hours, I just wouldn’t open it. On the other hand, I know from personal experience that it isn’t always this easy. AppCap is a tweak that allows you to set a limit on your usage on a distracting app, hopefully encouraging you to use it less…(...) Apple relaxes 3-device limit on friends and family purchases Posted: 13 Feb 2013 05:00 PM PST In another sign of Apple’s inventory levels perhaps finally catching up to demand, it has been discovered that the company has relaxed its annual 3-device limit on products bought by employees, their friends, family members and other participating entities. Previously, Apple employees were allowed to purchase up to three devices each year. Rather than set a new specific number limit, Apple says it’s now “a judgment call”. And as part of the Employee Purchase Program (EPP), a 15 percent discount applies to select products. True to its form, Apple half-jokingly advises employees against “advertising a 15 percent discount on Apple products for all of your Facebook friends”…(...) Analyst: iPhone 5 sales decelerating, iPhone 5S enters manufacturing in March Posted: 13 Feb 2013 04:55 PM PST According to one analyst, Apple’s suppliers are getting ready for iPhone 5S manufacturing, which should commence in March with a likely summer introduction in mind. With the next-gen iPhone just a few months away, Apple is apparently winding down some iPhone 5 manufacturing as sales of the handset are “decelerating faster than expected”. Per the rumor-mill, the iPhone 5S will be a mid-cycle specs upgrade sporting a faster CPU/GPU (likely a new A7 chip). Rumors are also suggesting a higher-resolution camera (possibly a 13-megapixel sensor). Some think Apple will for the first time offer the iPhone in a range of colors, though the handset is expected to retain the current two-tone industrial design…(...) Apple appeals Brazil’s iPhone trademark ruling Posted: 13 Feb 2013 03:31 PM PST In a repeat of the ProView situation, Apple today lost exclusive rights to the ‘iPhone’ trademark in Brazil to a local company called IGB Electronics S.A. that sells an Android cheapo with ‘iPhone’ in its name. While this means both IGB and Apple are allowed to market ‘iPhones’ in the 200 million people country, Apple – keen on avoiding user confusion and public humiliation – has now appealed the decision by the Brazilian Institute for Industrial Property (INPI)…(...) Music Controls Pro 6.0+ discounted while developers bring features back to iOS 6.x Posted: 13 Feb 2013 02:33 PM PST Since iOS 3.x, the most feature rich jailbreak apps for music was Music Controls Pro. If you wanted a custom control overlay for music, swipe controls, a remote server, and a host of other features, Music Controls Pro was the way to go. Unfortunately, the original version of Music Controls Pro is no longer compatible with iOS 6. While the all new Music Controls Pro 6.0+ only has a fraction of the previous app’s capabilities, the price is currently discounted to $3.99 while the developers bring the new app up to speed. Currently Music Controls Pro includes swipe controls, Notification Center plugins for playback and volume, task switcher controls, and status bar integration for song titles. These are the core features that kept the original Music Controls Pro on my iPad in iOS 5.1.1…(...) Apple is killing it when it comes to mobile video Posted: 13 Feb 2013 01:19 PM PST There is now confirmation of what we already suspected: Apple is killing it when it comes to mobile video. The iPhone, iPad and iPod touch collectively account for 60 percent of mobile video, with Apple’s smartphone and tablet comprising more than half of all mobile clips viewed during 2012, according to a study released Wednesday. By comparison, 32 percent of Android devices are used for viewing mobile video. That’s another acknowledgment of both Apple’s tablet dominance and the fact that owners of Apple mobile gear use their devices more often than their fellow Android-totting counterparts. In 2012 alone, mobile video viewing grew sixfold versus the previous year as mobile devices increasingly replace computers as the preferred platform for media consumption…(...) Clear makes annoying Edge Swipes optional Posted: 13 Feb 2013 12:53 PM PST Clear, Realmac Software’s innovative to-do app, was released a year ago and made a splash with its clean interface and heavy use of multitouch gestures. Today, the software was updated in response to feedback from users who objected to how the Edge Swipe feature was implemented. Edge Swipes let you quickly switch between your lists by dragging your finger from screen edges. Unfortunately, this can quickly become a pain in the you-know-what. The thing is, Clear’s workflow focuses on ordinary swipes which tended to be interpreted as edge swipes if you made the swipe too close to the edge of the screen. Clear version 1.2.1 makes this problem a thing of the past by making Edge Swipe an optional feature, though you’ll have to disable it inside Clear's Settings…(...) Apple (again) mentioned in a rumored Loewe takeover bid Posted: 13 Feb 2013 11:58 AM PST In a déjà vu moment, Reuters this morning reported that shares of the German luxury TV maker Loewe surged 33 percent on renewed talk of a possible acquisition by Apple. The news gathering organization quotes a trader who claims Apple supposedly wants to bid 4 euros a share for Loewe, or approximately $5,28 a share, a 40 percent premium above the company’s closing price on Tuesday. Loewe’s current market cap sits at 53 million euros, or about $71 million. With its $137 billion cash mountain, Apple could buy Loewe outright without blinking. Nearly one-third of Loewe, or 28 percent, is owned by Sharp, an Apple supplier that was involved in the Apple television rumor last summer…(...) Gartner: more than half of all handsets sold in 2012 were Apple, Samsung Posted: 13 Feb 2013 11:37 AM PST The battle between Apple and Samsung for smartphone supremacy rages on. While the two rivals accounted for more than half of smartphones sold during 2012, demand for the South Korean firm’s phones rose nearly 86 percent while iPhone sales rose by around 22 percent last year. According to Gartner, the two companies took No. 1 and No. 3 spots in overall while ranking first and second in the growing market for smartphones, respectively. This as the cell phone industry saw its first dip in sales since 2009. Other vendors, of course, were left fighting each other for scraps…(...) Valentine’s Day comes early: Real Racing 3 hits global App Stores ahead of schedule Posted: 13 Feb 2013 10:17 AM PST Today is a big day for iOS gamers as Electronic Arts launches the third installment in its popular Real Racing franchise. The game was originally scheduled for February 28 release so it wasn’t clear why Electronic Arts decided to post it today, but we’re not complaining. The good news don’t end here: as promised, Real Racing 3 is a free download with some unaggressive in-app purchases, a major strategic shift for Electronic Arts which typically prices its most recent iOS games between $5 and $10. It’s a massive download: you will need to have up to two gigabytes of free space on your device to install Real Racing 3, but Electronic Arts swears “it's worth it”…(...)
