This week a new iMac 27 inch found its way to my door and I have been
busy introducing it into my workplace.

Networking thus far seems to be a one-way data flow. The new machine
running Mountain Lion can see and access files via ethernet from the
old G4 running Tiger, from the older PowerPC iMac also operating on
Tiger via Airport, and an Intel MacBook Pro running on Leopard. But
none of these older machines recognize the new iMac with the Mountain
Lion OS. The computer does not pop up on the sidebar. I thought to
give the new computer a manual IP address and tried to access from
the other machines it using that address .. to no avail!

Can Tiger and Leopard network with Mountain Lion?

Did you turn on sharing on the new Mac?

"Component" is a configuration of analog video signal. It's the version carried on three wires rather than one, usually color coded red, green, blue (though that is technically incorrect). It's is common only on DVD players (and professional equipment). To capture DVDs via component video, you need a player with a component video output, sent to a video i/o device attached to a computer (Elgato, Matrox, AJA, Black Magic) to be digitized or "captured"; to file. This can also be done via s-video signal.

In the pre-digital television video world there four types of analog signal: RF (broadcast or "anetenna";), composite (one wire), s-video (one cable but two-wire), and component (three wire). RF and composite can have a form of analog copy protection known as "Macrovision," but there is no method for copy protecting s-video or component.

The DMCA does not apply to any of the above because the signal is analog. DMCA only covers "digital" copy protection.

Cheers,
tod

Howdy.

I have an LG Blueray burner in my MacPro. It works nicely for burning
BD data discs.

I use it with Toast Titanium with the BD plugin.

Occasionally I have some problems with BE-RE DL discs (the 50 GB
capacity rewritable ones) but usually a quick erase solves the
problem.

If you use disk cataloging/indexing software such as CDFinder, older
version of Toast might have problems automatically activating and
cataloging a BD-RE DL disc.

Ripping BD movies is a different and difficult kettle of fish for
several reasons.

There is software around that can RIP from a BD move disc to a
different/converted format for DVD burning.

I have heard that it is possible to use screen capture commercial
software to capture each frame of a BD video and then convert to a
format for DVD burning.

The app is "MakeMKV"

This app rips Blu-ray movies to the MKV format. MKV is a relatively new but widely used format in the ripping community (which is a Windows/Linux community). But it is not so broadly supported the mainstream Mac world. Also, MKV is a "container" and not a codec. The internal file codec remains the same. Blu-ray supports more than one internal codec (MPEG2, h.264, and VC-1). MPEG2 and VC-1 are not well supported on Macs.

So you can make an MKV with MakeMKV, but you may or may not be able to play it if it is VC-1 or MPEG2 encoded. In any case, you will likely need the VLC player to handle the MKV on a Mac.

Of course, I last investigated Make MKV over a year ago on 10.6. Maybe things have changed.

Cheers,
tod

I won't comment on the legality of creating an mkv file using MakeMkv, but once you have a legal mkv file from whatever source you prefer, HandBrake is a very good application at converting that to the more OSX friendly mp4 format. Most likely, you will gain in compression as well, so the file will be a fair bit smaller.

I do a lot of walking to keep in shape and use my iPod Touch a lot (model PC544LL/A - 32 GB) - I'm constantly starting and stopping normal mp3 songs and switching back and forth from the MUSIC app to the newer PODCASTS app

Is there a way to bookmark regular tracks and podcasts at exact points where I've stopped? - it's kind of a drag scrolling and fast forwarding, trying to find where I've left off. It would be nice to open a podcast have it be ready to play where I stopped it. THANKS!

Howdy.

I think you are having more than one problem.

One of the problems is the lack of Rosetta on the Mac OS X 10.6 Snow
Leopard system.

Go here are read about the Mac OS X system version that the HP soft are
can work with.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=298549&prodTypeId=15179&prodSeriesId=298547&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=219>

Snow Leopard is not mentioned as being compatible with the last
released HP drive/software. Last version being Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

If you wish to continue scanning on the G4, I suggest downloading the
appropriate driver package from HP at the URL above and installing it.

Downloading and installing this same package on the newer iMac MIGHT
(with Rosetta) fix the Snow Leopard problem.

Also suggest that before installing it you look for an uninstall
application with the HP software, and/or, do some extensive deleting of
the older HP scanner software, preferences, caches, files, etc.

Note that Disk Warrior is intended to resurrect hard drives that have
problems and running it would have zero impact on a problem with
application/driver/Rosetta software unless that software is part of
problems with a hard drive that is malfunctioning due to directory
corruption.

Your HP scanner driver/software might work in Snow Leopard but the HP
software requires that Rosetta be installed.

In Tiger, and Leopard, Rosetta was installed automatically.
In Snow Leopard, Rosetta has to be installed separately.
FYI, Rosetta is not included and can not be installed on Mac OS X 10.7
Lion and Mac OS X 10.8 systems.

Rosetta is the "invisible" software package that lets software encoded
for PowerPC Macs run on Intel Macs. It's like a language translator
for PowerPC to Intel (like the Rosetta Stone).

Here's some info about your scanner, drivers, and Rosetta from the
Hamrick VueScan web site.

http://www.hamrick.com/vuescan/hp_scanjet_3970.html>

VueScan is good 3rd party scanning software.

Here's an Apple KB article on Rosetta.

http://support.apple.com/kb/PH6531>

You may find Rosetta in the Optional Installs folder on your Mac OS X
10.6 Snow Leopard install disc. Locate the Optional Installs.mpkg
package and launch it and use the installer to direct Rosetta to the
correct drive.

You could also check with the SilverFast scanning driver people to see
if they have something for your scanner and Snow Leopard but this might
also require Rosetta.

Howdy.

Probably the easiest thing to do with software that comes with any Mac
is to open the PDF file. Preview is fine for this.

Arrange the PDF window so the entire JPG image is visible in one piece.

Find and launch the Grab program in your Applications/Utilities folder.

Grab is a screen capture program. Use the Selection tool (on the
Capture menu) to drag a marquee box around the image.

Presto! You have a separate file.

If the original JPEG image in the PDF is a high resolution, printable
resolution at nice quality, then you would need to use something else.

Adobe's Acrobat can extract the JPEG IF the access privileges for the
PDF have not been restricted by the original creator person.

Howdy.

So! Use your Character Viewer and add some hearts to your messages for
your Valentine.

Turn on Character Viewer and Keyboard Viewer in:

System Preferences > Language & Text > Input Sources.

Check Keyboard & Character Viewer.

Note the new menu on your Menu bar. It will have the national flag of
the language you selected for your Mac OS X system.

The Emoji character set is a large number of emoticons.

I think the term Emoji is a Japanese transliteration, of sorts, for
emoticon.

Drag a heart of two to your email message and send to your sweetie!

I have a older 10.4 iMac that wont' work anymore. It started to shut down by itself occasionally, then locked up a few times and now it only gives 'external error' message.
Well my newer (purchased 12 2011) iMac is now starting to act funny. Could it be POGO games? That was on both i Macs. I don't do much more than email. My searches are for definitions or recipes, mostly. This mac has locked up once and the pogo game just stopped twice. I have been using Mac for only 4 years so maybe it is me? I won't go back to PC's since they get viruses so often. I have been considering installing Norton or MacAfee. What should I do? (The nearest mac store is 4 hours away and I really don't have the time or money to go there.)
Thanks

Howdy.

I'm not aware of any viruses for Mac OS X. There are some Trojan
Horses but they are rare and you have to work a bit to ever get one.

I suspect your computers need some routine maintenance.

The routine maintenance topic has been discussed here many many times
but here's a basic list of 4 things to try. If these are unfamiliar to
you write back for detailed info and help with them.

1. Boot into Safe Disk Mode.

2. Do a Repair Disk ̦Permissions in Disk Utility.

3. Boot from your Mac OS X install DVD disc, launch Disk Utility from
the DVD (NOT FROM the normal hard drive) and run Repair Disk.

4. Download and install the free maintenance utility named OnyX. Run
the cleaning routines it has. There are several.

And be sure to do the usual things like empty Trash, check for
available hard drive space to be sure you haven't filled it almost up.

Good luck!

Denver Dan

Over the years I have owned 15 different Macs since the 80's. Well, I've sold my 2010 Core i3 21.5 Mac with the intention of buying a used 15 inch Macbook Pro 8,2 quad Core i7, 2ghz. Not sure of Applecare status yet. The asking price is $1k US.
I have bought enough new Macs, in fact all except this one, were new.
Aside from the blatantly obvious things to check, any subtle 'missable' things to look for? I do have current ASDs, but who would want to ask for an hour or so to run diags from a seller?? : )

TIA

Harry
