If you do Terminal:

"find /Applications -type f -name *.jar"

will list the stuff in the main Applications folder.

That said, I have, outside of XCode, only 2 apps in Applications that are shown by this. If I try to run one of them, it complains that it needs a Java runtime, and the Mac asks if I want to download one. The other app that turns up runs fine without Java.

Go figure.

Maybe that is not the best phrase. I meant an app that works in OS X that is not an Internet browser.

What apps are on the desktop, unless you put them there? Please rephrase your question.

I have already done that or something similar, to find the apps that I mentioned. I am looking for another password vault app that does not use Java. Kind of like finding out what apps did not need Rosetta when we moved to 10.7.

Many software sites don't say if they use Java in their apps.

1. It appears that Java is a security concern.

2. A password vault app is dependent on Java.

3. Go to 1.

(Someone please tell me that I've got this all wrong!)

Any Mac user with a Charles Schwab brokerage account needs Java to use their "Street Smart" software.

You're correct to the point that Java is a potential or future security concern. At least in a runtime or VM mode.

I choose to move away from Java-dependency, before and if it becomes a definite concern. Just like I did prior to my move to 10.7 and removed or replaced as many Rosetta-dependent apps as I could.

I acknowledge that it is not possible for everyone to move away from Java. And that is __their__ problem.

I don't have an account with Charles Schwab.

I have an password vault app that requires Java and I am looking for a replacement. At the moment it is not a big concern because I do not sync it with the Clouds, over the internet or by WiFi. It has always been sync'd by cable. And that is one of the requirements I have for a password vault app. That and that I can manually turn off any auto-fill or auto-sync options.

I have been using and enjoying 1Password for at least a couple of years. Just now, I completely disabled Java and restarted the computer. Then I launched 1Password, and it's working just great without Java.

Yes, I have started looking at 1Password. Thank you Jim and Daly.

Can you turn off the auto-fill? Can you sync by cable? And can you disable syncing by wifi and to the cloud?

It's a little expensive for my budget, right now, but I can still check it out and prepare.

Are you browsing w Safari on your iPhone and using Yahoo Mail?
Are you browsing w Safari on your Mac and using Yahoo Mail?
Are you using the Apple Mail App on your iPhone, and reviewing all your mail from all email accounts?

Aside, ONLY my experience in recent years, Yahoo Mail is not a reliable source w consistency. There will be days in which Yahoo Mail is unreachable, or sporadic. Connecting w Yahoo Groups is not a consistent experience anymore. But I continue because of the reach Yahoo Groups still experiences when it works.

I have a PDF which is mostly text and some simple monochrome line drawings.

The contrast is low and experimenting with GraphicConverter I see that I can adjust the Levels to improve the readability. This affects the one page that is currently in the GC window.

The PDF is 50 pages. I'd like to not do this 50 times, but I don't see a way to adjust the entire document.

How can I change Levels for the entire document?

Maybe another app?

Thanks,
Dave

Found no miracle way to do this to multiple page pdfs, but . . .

In Acrobat Pro, Document/Split Document/OK/
Split document by Number of Pages:1
Save to same folder or somewhere else.
In Photoshop, Create a Batch Action to quickly adjust all
selected pdfs to the same contrast.
In Acrobat Pro, File/Combine/Merge Files into Single PDF.

If you don't own Photoshop, there may be slower per pdf method.

Howdy.

If anyone in our group is a SimCity fan, here's some info about the
major new release due out on March 5, 2013.

I've been playing SimCity since it first came out for Macintosh back in
the early 1990s on a Mac Iici.

The SimCity version available for many years now has required Rosetta
and I've not been able to launch the game in OS X 10.7 Lion.

The new version is Intel native on Macintosh.

http://www.simcity.com/>

You can pre-order SimCity 5 now.

Before ordering SimCity 5, be sure to find the computer requirements
listing and in particular check the video card requirements.

The SimCity web site doesn't make this information easy to find.

Here's the system requirements page:

http://www.newsimcity.com/new-simcity-5-system-requirements/>

You may have to do some more Google or Yahoo searching to find
information about whether your Mac's video card is new enough to work
with SimCity 5.

The original video card in my 1st generation MacPro is not up to snuff
as it turns out (RATS RATS RATS!).

I may have to wait on SC5 until the new MacPro comes out this spring.

The new SimCity looks amazing, but i need to say, i'm strong fan of 2000
version (when i started to play in my PC). The system requirements is a
little higher for standard mac 2011 and older. An upgrade of ram will be
necessary to run this game in my MacMini (2011 late).
