Thanks for the responses. Yes, it's a Mac. I have maybe 15000 tunes but I
think i'ts probably about 4000 without dupes. It takes up a lot of space
but the biggest thing to me is if I delete 1 or 3 when I see them I could
be deleting the one I placed in a Playlist. Never know which ones you can
delete.
It seems like I could put them all in one file and when I add them it would
ask me if I wanted to add the duplicate. But that doesn't seem to work out.

I would recommend trying this app from Doug's Scripts:
It's $15.00

I have a major problem with duplicates too; if you find a good solution
please let us know. I have multiple copies of all my music on backup
files or external drive[s] and not too long ago I had to reinstall
Itunes and it picked up duplicates on every song. There were 3 or 4
copies of every song and some had over a dozen. I know I have the
original songs in some cases on multiple cd's, such as the original,
then "his best" and still later "golden oldies"; and I've copied all of
these cd's to my pc then saved them to multiple places.
The only way I know to get rid of copies is to click "show duplicates"
then highlight the duplicates and hit delete. With over 3000 originals
that's a major PITA. It takes me hours to complete.
In Vista it appears my Itunes are located a little differently:
C:\users\user[me]\music\Itunes\Itunes media\music\artist\song. Again,
if you figure it out please let me know.
BTW, I'm backing up the Itunes media/music folder now but I wonder if
that will capture my playlists too? What is the preferred way to backup
Itunes?
Thanks,
James
