To the moderators:

I get the messages in digest form. A few moments ago, at the top of the digest I got this message via my gmail account.

"This message could be a scam. The sender's account may have been compromised and used to send malicious messages. If this message seems suspicious let us know and we'll alert the sender as well (in some way other than email)."

Then I get the option of reporting, or telling them I trust the message. I was unable to copy and paste the message. It's pretty bizarre.

Dear Tod, et al.

Thank you for your replies and assistance in this matter. I ended up
finding a used (still under warranty) Hitachi Travelstar 320 GB 7200 RPM
drive and 2 sticks of new Kingston 2GB RAM which have now been
installed, along with SnowLeopard. A SSD sounded great, but at this time
I did not want to spend the $ on that old a computer, though the speed
increase from that may have been worth it. I don't want less than a 120
GB unit, and the Intel ones are around $125. I added the used drive and
RAM for about half that cost. While over 600 charge cycles on the
system, it may be a newer battery with fewer than that, but it still
holds a couple of hours charge, so that was not part of the expense.
Bluetooth and wireless work fine in the house too.

The Macbook is actually quite the little beast, now that it is setup
like-new. It is meant to be a mobile unit between our bigger Macs
elsewhere.

I'm happy with it. So thanks again!

I'm using OS 10.6.8 on an 24" iMac circa 2007. I use Firefox 18.0.1 and Safari 5.1.7.

I seem to recall being able to go somewhere on my iMac to manage my stored passwords (for websites, accounts, etc), but I can't find where that is. I can't remember if this was specific to the browser I was using, or if it was a preference within the OS.

Can anyone help shed some light for me?

Thanks.
Eileen

Might you be thinking of KeyChain in system preferences?

And many browsers also have a "remember password" preference or setting.

Since I don't know if the ones in the browsers are encrypted or not, how secure they are and where they are kept, That is the first thing I turn off.

I also turn off any auto-fill feature in any password vault apps. I want the extra few seconds delate, to allow me to think if I want to proceed with the purchase of information disclosure, or if it is a scam or other malware. Computers work in the blink of an eye, and it is awfully hard getting the genie back into the bottle.

That sounds like Keychain Access. Go to Applications > Utilities to find it.

It does not come with your Mac, but you can download *One Password 3 for Mac
* to keep up with your passwords. It only works on OS X 10.5 or higher.

I just installed a 1TB Time Capsule and did a backup of my files (some 290GB). When the next backup is done do all the files get copied again or does the backup do only new files added since the last backup.

https://www.apple.com/timecapsule/backup.html>

> Time Capsule includes a wireless 2TB or 3TB hard drive designed to work with Time Machine in OS X Leopard or later. Just set Time Capsule as the designated backup drive for Time Machine, and that's it. Depending on how much data you have, your initial backup with Time Capsule could take overnight or longer. After it completes, only changed files are backed up — automatically, wirelessly, and in the background. So you never have to worry about backing up again.

Since Time Machine is controlling your backups, Time Machine records only "changes" per hour to your first original backup. It would be redundant and inefficient to do complete backups per hour. I would guess big business and financial institutions do frequent complete backups.

Christopher,

Oh, I have tried.

For the last 15 years, whenever I open an account, I open my password vault first and enter the information there _as_ I set up the account. In fact, I use the password in the vault to generate my passwords. Since they are random, I have a hard time remembering them at first and so need to have them stores somewhere.

I am on 3 yahoo group lists and I have nothing for any of them. It might be possible to forget to write down one password, but not 3. I have tried recovering the password, but other than the user name, there is no match to verify the account, and so there is no password reset.

They can.

They just need to use the same account they use for the group.

From the message, it appears he hasn't even tried tho.
