I used a Wi-Fi extender while on a RV trip with about 20 other RV in Alaska ( I had a internet satellite dish ) and it worked fine. I would put it on a post that had power, that the only connection it needed. The signal would be lost if a medal RV/building was in the way.

Don't know about getting outside metal. I have my extreme base station in a 2 x 6 framed structure with the concrete siding and it sends a signal over 100' to another extreme base station in a similarly constructed building with no problems.

No experience with metal however.

Radio can not penetrate metal siding or roof. Or a Faraday cage like the wire mess used for stucco walls.

Check out the Bear Extender:

Used in conjunction with this extended cable that allows you to mount
the Bear Extender on a window or away from metal:

What OS are you running?
The OP was running Snow Lion (IIRC) and since I am too, i thought my
response was relevant to Snow Lion and earlier OSX only...
Sorry if there was confusion...

Does the drop down menu show the keystrokes?
Yes, it does - i.e., Duplicate is "command/cloverleaf + D"

"The only Duplicate is in the Finder bar under Edit - trouble is it's
greyed out."

It's only greyed out if no file, folder or drive has been selected
before trying to duplicate [it], since it can not duplicate "nothing".

There is a Snow Leopard, 10.6, and there is a Lion, 10.7. There is no Snow Lion.

The OP is on 10.6.8, I believe. And the keystrokes for Duplicate show in Lion in Finder, but I don't think they do in Snow Leopard. And not all apps show it in the pull down menus.

I misread your post, and you did have the correct solution, 'It's only greyed out if no file, folder or drive has been selected
before trying to duplicate [it], since it can not duplicate "nothing".'

On the fun side, it can duplicate "nothing", but where do you expect to find it? Nowhere? So why bother. And with that we have answered 3 Ws. What: nothing, where: nowhere, and why: don't bother.

Not convinced a perl script would be better (actually, not convinced by perl full-stop, but thats a different discussion …).

Alan,
In response to this note from you, I downloaded XCode 4.3.3 today, which I expected to install "Developer Tools." Maybe that was a faulty assumption. But anyway, I got the XCode App.

Can you explain where to find FileMerge? Or how to access it?

If you use the spreadsheet method (which we learn you can't because Office 2008 doesn't use Macros), you definitely do NOT have to sort the lists.

Dane,
I know one ultra quick way to do it, and that is to send me the two lists, let me run the Excel magic on them and send the results back to you.

Five minutes.

When you go to send out a "new campaign" it automatically asks you if
you would like to eliminate duplicates in your mailing list.

I just sent Dane exactly what he needs. It is a small, free utility
called LineStripper. Unfortunately the company that wrote it is out
of business. But fortunately I still had a copy (it was a bit_h to
find, though).

Yep. You just select "remove duplicates" and Excel does the rest.

Not really, because that would leave you with a list containing all the names, including the ones he had already written to, unless I misunderstand what you are suggesting.

My quick macro method instantly flags the ones that are duplicates so you can delete the all in one select/delete.

Daly, You should find a folder (at the root level) named 'Developer'. Look for '/Developer/Applications/Utilities/FileMerge.app'. It is an ordinary (clickable) 'GUI' application.

(On a completely different tack in that folder also is 'Property List Editor.app' which is invaluable for '.plist' problems. It should be part of the standard OS install IMHO.)

Your post (the 'shell script' solution) turned up after I sent mine. It's an interesting idea to try -- which I shall.

As for Perl, some swear at it and others swear by it. I have kind of grown up with it since the early days of MacPerl so I belong to the latter. My pet hate is AppleScript which usually has six ways of writing a line out of which only one works and it's always a different one. But both have unique capabilities. (With apologies for veering off thread.)

Bad coincidence. The day following my post regarding using European 220-volt power with NA 110-volt appliances, my MacBook Pro's adaptor threw in the towel. And I was in the middle of setting up a newly purchased Logitech sound system to go with my laptop.

I'm now down below 80% on my battery.

I presume that my adaptor is truly shot, although it did come back on for a minute before I disconnected it to check on some sockets in my apartment.

I'm going to check the local Mac outlet tomorrow in downtown Budapest for new adaptors. If there is none, then can I use USB-style power sources for my laptop? I read that I can't, however I'd like a second opinion.

What are my other options? My laptop is my lifeblood here. It needs its juice. My ProBook is only a couple of years old. I'm surprised that the adaptor went so soon. No probs with it for the six months that I spent here in the winter of 2010/2011.

Thanx. Oneal

You've checked the cables and connectors for obvious damage?

Standard USB transformers can't supply anything like enough voltage or
power.

Is there an Amazon that can deliver to Budapest (.de perhaps?). Look for
Apple Magsafe adaptor.

Not sure what just happened, Otto. I had the adaptor plugged in (just in case it came to life during the night) and, when I opened the lid to power down (instead of leaving the laptop in sleep mode) the adaptor's light came on.

So, now it's charging and, unlike the last time, I'm not disconnecting the adaptor just in case it will not again come on.

If this is an intermittent thing with the adaptor, it's reasonable to presume that it (like a wonky harddrive) is on the verge of completely failing.

Not sure what .de means, Otto.

There goes the adaptor. It just cut out again as I typed the above sentence. At least the battery charged a half-dozen percentage points.

I may try Amazon if nothing exists locally.

Thanx. Oneal

The charging cut out twice and came on twice --it's still on-- since I sent my previous post.

This may not be an adaptor problem. Is there something in the laptop that regulates the incoming current in some way? If there is, then that unit may be defective, causing the occasional power disconnect.

Since my laptop is charging (for now) I'll do the Google thing and see what I come up with.

Thank you for your patience, John. I have not been on this group for some time, and was unaware it had been discussed. I rarely have luck with searches…

Don't worry about it. But do try John's suggestion. It works nicely, though on my system, the possibility of having to relaunch the Finder after each restart turned out to be reality. So I relaunch the Finder after shutting down or restarting the computer and I have the colored icons back. It's nice.
