Don't install it! It screwed up Lion necessitating a reinstall!
Macupdate.com shows similar results.

Installed it on Mac Mini Lion 10.7.4. No issues.

While it is nice to know that people are looking out for their fellow users. I wish people would qualify their statements.

Some people are having problems with the Thunderbolt firmware update. Only the recent MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini have Thunderbolt capabilities. It seems the Mac mini is not experiencing that from recent list posts, here and elsewhere.

Yes, if it goes wrong it is a major issue, but for a good number, but a small portion of the user base.

I'm sorry Tim, you were not the one that was meant for.

People have started similar threads with no real info on several lists. Since it is firmware, did they install it correctly, meaning did they stop everything else, unplug all peripherials, and let it run its full course. What Mac did they try to install it on? What did they do or not do? For the blogs, what is their experience level?

But no, all they post is "Don't do it."

And not to pick on just John, who it seems this is his first post to this list, since on another list a regular posted just about the same "Don't do it."

Agreed, but I also needed to be more specific with the details since different versions of the same machine can be affected differently.

"Mac Mini" does not indicate that there is Thunderbolt, but A1347 Mac Mini does.

"Duplicate" in the Edit menu of Pages seems from my experimenting to be intended for duplicating *objects* within a Pages document.

You are correct, there is no Duplicate in the File menu in Pages in Snow Leopard.

Your are further correct that there is a Duplicate in the File menu *in Finder* in Snow Leopard, but that is intended for duplicating a file or folder that is selected in Finder.

Now, I've lost the thread here ... what was the problem we were trying to solve?

It's irritating that Apple thinks I shouldn't care about having access to the file system.

Originally someone asked how to save in Lion since there was no Save As. Then the subject morphed to how to "properly" save at all in other versions of OS. We found there to be lots of ways. (heh)

In Lion the colour has disappeared from the icons in the sidebar in Finder and Mail. I can't seem to find a way to get it back. It takes more peering without the coloured icons. Is there a way to restore the colour?

You can do this very easily with Nisus Writer Pro.

Use the "Compare Documents"-macro. It allows you to compare words, clauses or paragraphs. In this case you should choose paragraphs. The new addresses will be shown with a green background color; which means, in just a few seconds you have all what you need.

Here's a Mac version of what I sent to Dane this morning from Excel on a PC at work. It certainly works for me. It does require that you have Excel, I think 2008 or 2011. (To get the Developer tab to show in Excel, go to the Excel menu, choose Preferences, then in Preferences, the "Ribbon" icon. Put a checkmark next to "Developer.")

In an Excel spreadsheet, copy the whole new list to column A.
Copy the original list into column C.

Click the Developer tab.
Click the Macros button.
Give the new Macro a name ("Find_Matches")
Click Create.

In the module window that opens, paste the following code (omitting the dividing lines I have inserted before and after). If you end up with duplicates of Sub Find and End Sub (at the start and finish), remove the duplicates.

----------------------------------------------------------
Sub Find_Matches()
Dim CompareRange As Variant, x As Variant, y As Variant
' Set CompareRange equal to the range to which you will
' compare the selection.
Set CompareRange = Range("C1:C25")
' NOTE: If the compare range is located on another workbook
' or worksheet, use the following syntax.
' Set CompareRange = Workbooks("Book2"). _
' Worksheets("Sheet2").Range("C1:C5")
'
' Loop through each cell in the selection and compare it to
' each cell in CompareRange.
For Each x In Selection
For Each y In CompareRange
If x = y Then x.Offset(0, 1) = "match"
Next y
Next x
End Sub
----------------------------------------------------------

In about the middle of that code, see where it says 1:C5n two places. Replace the 5with the actual number of rows of addresses you have (count the number of rows in the longer of your two lists). If it is, say, 200 addresses, then those two locations in the script would read: (1:C200

Go back to your spreadsheet and select all the contents in Column A, from A1 to (for example) A200.
Go back to the Macros window and select your "Find_Matches" macro, then click Run.

Column B will now say atchfor each item that has a match in column C for an item in Column A.

In the Data menu, choose Sort, and tell it to sort on Column B. That will put all the cells that say atchtogether. Select all the rows that say atchand what left will be the rows that had unique values.

It may sound like a lot but it really just takes a few seconds.

Good suggestions! But I don't have (and won't buy) Nisus Writer Pro. I downloaded Meld but am currently too full of painkillers to figure out how to extract the ".xz" file. Daly shot me her Excel solution right away this morning, but it either doesn't work in Office 2008 or I'm too obtuse to figure it out. There is no "Ribbon" icon in my preferences, nor can I find anything indicating the availability of a Developer tab.

So that leaves me with Jim's suggestion to use TextWrangler. I already have it, along with BBEdit, but can't find any sensible way to make it do what I want. Like I said, I'm sort of looking for the opposite of the "Find Differences" command. Jim, any tips for getting started?

Thanks all!

Daly shot me her Excel solution right away this morning, but it either doesn't work in Office 2008 or I'm too obtuse to figure it out. There is no "Ribbon" icon in my preferences, nor can I find anything indicating the availability of a Developer tab.

There is Apple's "File Merge" which is free and part of 'Developer Tools'. It might be worth having a look -- I am assuming it is possible to download it from the 'App Store' separately without the rest of the developer stuff. I don't know if it would be better than BBEdit for your purposes.

Problems with Lion

Keith Whaley here…
Mid-2011 iMac, OS 10.7.3 (!), SM v. 2.9.1.

Just migrated a lot of stuff from my old iMac, which had OS 10.6.8.

One of my problems now is:

After setting up my incoming (pop3) and outgoing (.smtp) servers with the
appropriate data, it forever wants a password I can't find…
The cycle keeps asking me to enter a new password, but… I haven't a clue as
to how to do that.
Password manager has a password for .smtp, but in practice, SeaMonkey will
not accept it.

I tried almost all the others I think might work, but none have so far...
I don't know what to do next. Help?

I tried having NO passwords, but SM says that's a no-no.
I'd like to find where I can change or view what that PW is, but can't find.

kw

I have a dozen other questions that are "Where the blazes do I find
[so-and-so] item I used to have?" Such as the various Widgets? I want to be
able to access Wikipedia and Google and such things at my whim.
I found Dashboard, but it only has about half the Widgets my old OS used to
have. Stuff like that.
