OK, so, for the non-geek, how can I determine if our machines (this one and my wife's mini) can run Lion or Mountain Lion?
Also, once ML is out, will it still be possible to get the Lion only upgrade? (We were really hoping to go directly to ML for our entry into the cloud.)

True I think what the Mac need is to have the 64 bit Kernel and 64 bit EFI
to run Mountain Lion oh and a 64 bit CPU. Like the first gen Mac Pro has a
64 Bit CPU but a 32 Bit EFI and a 32 Bit Kernel and will not run Mountain
Lion but run Lion well. Now my 2008 MacBook Pro will run Mountain Lion that
what I am using to test it out.

Currently, I cannot find specs/requirements for Lion at Apple.com, only Mountain Lion.
What differences have you found?

Michael,
Which 2008 MacBook Pro, the early or the late 2008?
Your signature just confused your post, since the i7 processor did not out until 2011.
It is nice to have a reference point from someone doing some trail blazing. But since I know Mtn.Lion has a minimum from the mid/late 2007 MBP, I know at least mine is not the bare minimum required.

Re: Need Help with Spotlight Search
Posted by: "LouisD" lou@loudina.com ldina

I have an example below, and am looking for a better way to find this file in Spotlight.
I have three images in one of my many image folders on my Data HDD. The images all include the string "P10000900" in the name. Here are the exact file names:
P10000900-RevA.jpg
P10000900.jpg
P10000900.psd
All I could remember was that the file name included "900". Doing a normal search in Spotlight by typing 900 into the search window finds a lot of files, but not these three. I searched by file name in only my image folders. The "900" characters are the 6th, 7th and 8th characters in the file name, and I am guessing Spotlight doesn't normally look that deep, so they don't show up.
I can use the additional search parameters (by clicking the "+") and set it up to "Kind is Image" and another that says "Name contains 900", and that does work, but only if I then remove the "900" characters from the original Spotlight search field. If I leave these characters in the search field, Spotlight comes up blank. That's a slow, cumbersome process.
So, assuming I am using Spotlight, and not another search utility, is there a faster way to type what I want into the search field and locate these files?? I tried "*900* and it didn't respond to these wildcards. I tried kind:images, which files ALL images in this folder, but that's a LOT of images.
Anybody know how to do this?
Thanks,
Lou

Here just one example: Typing "sff" in Finder will automatically activate the Spotlight drop down menu with "kind:folder " already entered in the field. Now I only have to write the name of the folder I'm looking for. This saves me a lot of time; and Spotlight will only show me *folders* that match, no files, no contacts, no messages, etc.

Hi!
Acknowledging mistake: I found the right "help" file and used "Grab" to capture it. I stuck the resulting .tiff file in a message and posted it.
This group does not allow anything but text filesâ"and so removed the .tiff.
I'll try again later...

Sorry Earle, I didn't meant to slam you on this, but messages like this do pop up and sometimes and remain a mystery. I am glad that you responded though and I assume that you are now aware that many Yahoo groups do not allow attachments. This is for a very good reason even thought some people become grumpy because of the policy.

Thanks, Forrest: No slam taken.
Some of the newsgroups I am active in will allow non-text attachments and some don't.
Actually, I am list-mom on a couple of Yahoo groups, and I have allowed non-text attachments.
When I get a minute, I'll re-post (in text form) what I was trying to post.
Cheers!

I know that. In NotLight there is no such option, as far as I can see. That's the reason why I asked.

I downloaded it and on the test page it filled in my street address twice (address 1 and address 3) and put my phone number in every phone slot. I am not sure if that is just for the test or if this is how it will work on a real form.
I should know within the next week or so...

Have you actually gone to the Safari preferences and under autofill used the edit button? You can add or eliminate what you want auto fill to use.

Hi all,
Recently my early 2008 model Mac Pro has been causing me some issues in that without actual kernel panics, i.e. screen dims with an overlay I get a popup message after logging in with a Problem Report.
The report listed the following and let me know what this means if anyone knows?

If I read this correctly you have 4 gigs of RAM installed, is that right? To me, 4 gigs is not a lot of RAM anymore for running apps, especially games, and system software. I have 12 on a iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. But someone else might know what is going on. jr

I'd guess that your problem is RAM related, though I'm not an expert. Perhaps one or two of your RAM modules was fried somehow?
Perhaps someone can suggest a way to test your RAM.

Rember. . it will test RAM even if it hasn't gone completely bad yet. that is intermediate, or off and on problems will be detected. no
take out this RAM stick, and see what happens. it's easy. it's fun.
