I have Calibre installed, but I can not get the book onto my Mac.

Oops! That is wrong, and Calibre can't read it. It is a Kindle book, but is readable in iBooks on my iPhone.

I don't know if later versions are different but my Preview in 10.5.8 can't
open epub files. It can, of course, open pdf books.

You can't use iBooks on a Mac, of course.

Related to opening ebooks.

Some months ago when I installed Lion I bought (~$15) a user book on that operating system from the iTunes book store. It downloaded and its cover sits on my iTunes in the Books folder. Now what to do with it. Tried opening it in iTunes with no luck. Figuring I needed a separate ebook reader I download some.

I dragged the title icon to my desktop. I got info on it, 45 MB epub format. The first was ezreader I bought from the app store. That won't open it. More recently I got the Kindle for Mac - that won't either - also kindle uses a different format. I went to nearby Barnes and Noble store and bought a nook which will read epub books. Also have nook on my mac -the latter would not open the lion book. I have Adobe digital editions software which I got to download borrowed books for my neighborhood library which use overdrive software for downloading. I tried dragging the lion icon into that program - no go. After the recent discussions here I downloaded calibre which appears to be a nice program. I dragged the icon into that program which did appear on the screen. When I clicked to open the book I got a dialog box saying the book was lock protected by DRM. Finally I mounted my nook on the computer and dragged the lion icon into book file on that. It went. When I click on the title it tells me the book is 950+ pages. I could read the first four pages which were the table of contents. When I went further into the book it told me what page I was on but there was no text at all.

What am I not doing? Obviously I won't buy another book thru the iTunes books store. Barnes and Noble store works fine as does my library borrowing.

Could you tell us exactly what the book is? I suspect it can only be read

I am not able to open these books in iTunes with Preview either. The

Which is why posted it and asked if it worked for anyone.

I don't have an iBook to test with, but could you perhaps read it on the Mac in iBooks Author?

Perhaps they will have a look and even provide a new one if they're feeling
generous? From Amazon you can buy a third party adapter for a fraction of
the price.

The most likely thing is repeated flex/strain damage in the wile at the level of the mag-safe connector.

With FileMerge.app? I don't know if it will. My original post merely suggested it might be worth looking at. Whether it can do anything more than BBEdit (or Unix 'diff' for that matter) I'm afraid I just don't know.

Unix 'comm' has the disadvantage that the lines in the file have to be sorted alphabetically first. For that reason it couldn't be used to 'prune' files containing addresses for example. You would get the fresh lines for sure, but not quite in the right order!

Help with restoring/copying media

Posted by: "Roger Harris" skunktown@gmail.com   robo_booger

MacBook 13 inch Early 2008

I've been using Time Machine to back up to an external HD that is plugged into my Airport Extreme. That HD has a partition and on one side is the Backup Disk, on the other is my "Media Disk". The Media disk has NOT been backed up and now it is acting up. Disk Utility cannot repair it. I get this message when trying:

Verify and Repair volume "Media Disk"
Checking file systemChecking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Invalid node structure
The volume could not be verified completely.
Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Error: Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.

So, any suggestions?

All the media that is on my "Media Disk" is also on my iPad and iPod. Can I copy everything over from my iPad or iPod?

Anybody have any experience with software that restores media from you iPod/iPad/iPhone - such as Senuti, or PodWorks etc. Hopefully a free one.

I would think you could synch your iPad or iPod to iTunes (if it's music) and/or iPhoto (if it's pictures) and then erase the drive, repartition it, and get the media over to it from iPhoto and iTunes, and restart Time Machine.

Senuti copies from your iDevice to the Mac, as does PhoneView from ecamm. What is your "Media Disk"?

Yeah, I really wasn't clear enough in my original post. The Media Disk contains my iTunes library and the disk is now irreparable, according to Disk Utility. I don't have that backed up anywhere, but the music on my iPod and iPad is all recently synched.

So, Daly, when I try to open iTunes now, it asks me where the library is. If I create a new library and then try to synch with my iPod or iPad, what will happen? Will the music go into the new library or will the new "empty" library replace everything on the iPad/iPod?

Just seems very risky to me...

Yes, that IS risky. I didn't understand that you kept your main iTunes library on that disk. I thought it was a backup.

I know there's some way to synch back to your computer, but I don't remember the trick. Maybe moving the library from the Time Machine back to your computer and synching that?

Or use one of those backward utilities already suggested, like Senuti (iTunes backwards, cute name), or ipod_itunes.

I also liked the suggestion of using DiskWarrior on the external drive. I had forgotten the times I have resurrected completely DEAD DEAD hard drives with a single pass of DiskWarrior.

Howdy.

No. Wont run.

An app or game for an iPod Touch / iPhone / iPad requires the operating system named iOS which is on those mobile devices.

Your Macintosh operating system is Mac OS X. The two systems have common roots but are very different.

You should try the MacUpdate site and search for games. It has freeware, commercialware, shareware games and all kinds of programs.

<http://www.macupdate.com/>

There are also games called widgets for Dashboard.

Good luck.

Spotlight Search for Phrase, Boolean, Metadata, Values

Howdy.

I keep learning. Thought i'd share this. Some is recent for me and
some I've known for a long time.

Here's some information about how to refine search and find commands in
Mac OS X.

User these in the Spotlight menu on the Menu bar. Use these in a
Finder windows search box.

The following is an article in the Apple help KB.

Mac OS X 10.5 Help

Specifying criteria in the Spotlight search field

When you enter the text you want to search for in a Spotlight search
field, you can also include criteria to refine the results as Spotlight
searches.
You can search by phrase or by metadata (data that describes other
data) attribute, and perform Boolean queries.
You can specify absolute dates and a range of values.
