For the Magsafe 2 power cord, not backwards compatible, a PITA.

I try not to drool over mere computers but this one nearly does it.
<http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/>

Flash memory makes it super-thin all over, not just in a wedge shape like
the Air, and 256 GB is enough for me.

Adapters for ethernet and FireWire are not included: you have to buy them
as extras. We have no regular need for ethernet on our notebooks and USB 2
will do instead of FW for monthly clone updates (I wonder if Apple's
adoption of USB 3 – at last – means that USB *2* performance will now at
last match that on PCs, bringing it closer to FW400?).

I'm slightly surprised that an HDMI port is built-in rather than using a TB
adapter, but that's all good.

Magsafe 2 is a narrower-but-longer connector for the thinner case.

>

No SuperDrive and we'll still need something to import CDs into iTunes:
either get an external one or keep an old notebook.

Overall, this is the first notebook that looks a leap forward rather than
just an evolution of my ageing PowerBook!

I think it's the same electrically, just using a narrower, longer connector
to fit the slimmer case.

PS Or use TB adapters with your FW devices.

Get a Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter. Some have now been available
for almost a year.

With that resolution, you might be surprised what you might be able to read. I can place two docs side by side and read them.

As far as your FW peripherals, why replace them or find an adapter, of course. Standardizing to one port, will be fine...
until it is superseded as it always is. Remember when BT was cutting edge and now it is ho hum? Or SCSI?

I want my graphical elements (fonts, icons, images) to look finer-grained, smoother, without jaggies, even when I increase font size as needed.

Have you tried running a utility like Cocktail to "clean up"?
You might also try posting in the Apple Discussion forums - if you haven't done it already.

I do not like not being able to change the screen res. I'll never be able to see the icons. Too tiny for my old eyes. And I watch movies on my computers so even tho the screen should be sharper, no optical drive so thats inconvenient.

The icons will not, by default, be any smaller than they are now on 15in MacBook Pros. They will have the same size, just much more detail.

> And I watch movies on my computers so even tho the screen should be sharper, no optical drive so thats inconvenient.

Then get an external drive and rip them to file (MP4 with Handbrake, for instance).

I for one thoroughly applaud Apple for getting rid of the increasingly obsolete optical drive in this update. The average user has very little use for one these days, and certainly not 'on the road' so when they do an external drive at home is perfectly fine. An optical drive uses a massive amount of real-estate up inside the case, which is just not justified these days.

Good riddance. Off they go to join floppies…

Good. I have my 17” laptop set fir 1024 x 768 stretched. That makes the icons large enough to see. I don't recall offhand what I have my desktop computer set to. It's the largest screen apple makes or made. I think it's either 24 or 27"

yeah, i miss my imac. i can see my macbook better , type better, and watch netflix streaming movies on my macbook when i am lying down and have it on my chest.
i'm debating how long i should wait until i get an iPad.
but, my iMac is still my main computer.

1. Screen res on Retina MBPros is changeable.

2. No one said it couldn't *use* an optical drive, it just does not have one built-in.

My 15" laptop is set to 1440x900, and my desktop icons are 44x44 pixels. But in desktop view options, I could increase that to 128x128 pixels should I choose. That ought to be more than large enough even on the native 1920x1200 screen on a 17" machine.

Currently, 27" is the largest. They used to have a 30".

Thanks for the suggestions. I went into the Genius Bar. The water sensor was red. The tech said that even when dry it probably would not work again as it was shorted out. I could not wait for it to dry out and then not work so I went ahead with a replacement. It cost me $149 for a replacement but walked out with a working iPhone again. I didn't think about claiming on my household insurance but I think if I must pay the deductible, it will be more than the replacement cost. Chalk it up to a lesson learned.

What I don't get about the Genius Bar sometimes is how they decide to give free replacements and when not to. My wife dropped her iPhone in a deep puddle. Total water damage. I took it to the Bar and the fellow replaced it saying "everyone gets one". Weird thing about it, this wasn't her first time. She had another before that one that had water damage and they made us pay for it.

Highly unlikely, because Dictionary.app is not scriptable! -- Did you mean Doug's Scripts for iTunes?

Bill, I used to use Dictionary Editor 1.3. It is for Tiger and it's free, but it has been discontinued now. The core functionality for English seems to be still working in Lion, though. No Unicode support, so that old English words with thorn and eth are not displayed correctly. The same applies to other (European) languages that require Unicode.

With Dictionary Editor you can import wordlists from text files. I imported for example all my old user dictionaries from MS Word and Nisus.

There used to be also a free Preference Pane called "Dictionary Cleaner". It has been discontinued too, and it's not compatible with Lion (don't know about Snow Leopard).

If you can't find Dictionary Editor on the web I can send you a copy, if you want.
