Howdy.

Terry, are you aware that you can change the size of icons on the
Desktop from 16x16 to 128x128?

Are you aware you can change the size of file and folder name text for
Desktop icons?

Are you aware that you can change the size of icons and file and folder
name text in Finder windows?

That does not sound right. It should act just the same as 10.6.8 does. It should not just show up on the desktop. You should have to open a finder window and copy the stuff over from the memory stick to somewhere on the computer. When you remove the memory stick is the stuff still on the new computer?

When you "Get Info" on the stick and it shows how much used and free space, that does not confirm the info has moved. Even if you dragged and dropped the stuff from the stick, it only copies it to the new computer, it does not remove it from the stick.

I need some help with Lion. It is not acting as I'd expect. Way too different from 10.6.8!

I have my old iMac (Mid 2007) and this new one side by side.
Before I pass off the older one to my son, I'm taking some stuff off.
Most of it was transferred by the Geek Squad, but I'm transferring odds'n'ends by way of a memory stick.

Problem statement:
Put memory stick in USB2 port on the older computer, copied some stuff over to it.
Put the memory stick in the new computer, it shows up on the desktop. I do a "Get Info" on it and it says the stick has approx. 2/3 of it's 32 GB used, the rest is free. That confirms the data was transferred.

Okay, my problem is, there seems to be nothing I can do to view what's ON that memory stick!
Double clicking on it brings up a window with nothing in it. No list of files as I had expected.

I tried other methods I used to use, to get it to list what's on it, and no success.

Who has an idea why? How might I persuade it to list it's own contents?

Keith,

You're not telling us what we would expect anyone to check: can you see the
flash drive's contents on the old Mac? Try the usual Finder options
Icons/Lists/Columns to see which works best for you.

Viewing a flash drive in Finder is like looking at any other volume. How
does Macintosh HD look in Finder on the new Mac?

When I first installed the memory stick, it's icon showed up on the desktop
as a standard removable disc icon. I opened my old HD, selected
Application Support folder (13 GB) and Applications folder (7.3 GB) and
click-dragged them both to the disc icon.
Took many minutes...

Now, while still on the old computer, when I double click on the disc icon,
it offers four views:
Icon view - but no icons showing
List view - no listed items
Column view - all empty
Cover Flow view: Top pane all black, bottom pane empty of data

By the way, to establish what I'm using for the flash drive:

It's a new HP v125w - USB 2.0 Format: MS-DOS (FAT32)
Capacity: 32.3 GB
Used: 23.8 GB on disc, 9.12 GB available

When you "Get Info" on the stick and it shows how much used and free space,
that does not confirm the info has moved. Even if you dragged and dropped
the stuff from the stick, it only copies it to the new computer, it does
not remove it from the stick.

Perhaps so, but where is the data? How can the stick indicate 23 GB on disc
but nothing shows up anywhere - none of the four views?

When I click on the JD icon, it opens in Cover Flow view, with the large
icons at the top, and the list of all items contained therein, in the
bottom pane. That's what I expected for the flash drive, but didn't get.

I have a suspicion that, altho' HP says it will work on a Mac, they were
thinking about the older Intel Mac (up thru OS 10.6 something, and that
doesn't do it for Lion.
Not sure, but I'm thinking in that direction...

coupla things - FAT32 format would probably hose those files...
Lion by default hides those types of folders... there was a terminal command that un-hid them,
sorry, i don't remember it...

Could part of the problem be that it is formatted for MS-DOS (FAT32)? Or maybe the old Mac doesn't play nice with USB2 even though it should.

Trying to make sense of your interspersed reply is making it hard to make heads or tails, and so I am done.

So, it's nothing to do with 10.7: it's a problem with the flash drive which
also occurs on 10.6. What happens if you copy one small, simple file to it?
Can you see that?

FAT32 should be fine with any version of OS X.

Howdy.

I'm not sure why you are having this problem.

However, I would reformat/erase the thumb drive for Mac OS Extended.
The files on the FAT 32 formatted thumb drive should still be visible
on both Macs, however.

The issue with FAT 32 is that it may cause problems with some file and
folder names due to length of the names and also if the file or folder
names have characters forbidden (aka "reserved" by DOS such as

slash, backslash, question mark, percent sign, asterisk, colon,
vertical bar/pipe, quote, less than, greater than, period (except in
the 8.3 position).

Some of the above characters should be avoided in file and folder names
on Mac OS X also such as slash, backslash, initial period, and colon.

In any case, reformatting/erasing the thumb drive first using Disk
Utility then doing a disk check would be a good test to see if the
device is not defective.

Note that you can always reformat/erase the thumb drive as FAT-32 after
using it as Mac OS Extended.

If the thumb drive doesn't show files on the new Mac, you might check
Finder > Preferences on new Mac to see if the General icon and the Hard
disks, External Disks check boxes are checked. But from your message
this doesn't seem to be the issue - at least worth looking at just in
case.

I'm sure this may sound snotty, but it's critical to my understanding, so
I'll have to risk that.
Why? Is drag and drop no longer working well in Lion, or, is there
something not quite right with the procedure? Or is your copy and paste
more comfortable for you?
Will one work where the other won't?

Drag-and-drop is alive and well on my Lion machine.

However, if one approach to a problem seems funky, it's nice to have alternatives to try out.

I just reformatted my flash drive as Mac OS Extended, or whatever it is,
and all of a sudden what I DO have on that disc will open as Cover Flow and
exhibit everything that's on it!
Good thing I tried that first, eh? <smile>

The other questions will come later. <bigrin>

Many thanks for everyone involved. It now seems to be working as I expected.
Thanks to one and all.

keith

I'll be back, with other esoteric and mundane questions. I know you guys
definitely have the answers! I really appreciate your responses!

How is your memory stick formatted? Generally they come Fat 32, which could be the problem. Use Disk Utility to reformat it Mac OS Extended Journaled and then copy your info over again…

iPod, My Weird Signature & German Books ??

Posted by: "Denver Dan" denver.dan@verizon.net   denverdan22180

Mon Jun 18, 2012 12:36 pm (PDT)

Howdy.

Two iPad questions.

1 Two group members have messaged me directly to say that when I post
a message from the new iPad that my signature is weird.

My signature on both the new iPad and the old iPhone SHOULD be right
side up and upside down exclamation points.

However, the identical appearing marks on the iPad seem to work
differently than on the iPhone even though on both devices they look
the same to me.

It should look like this if it survives the email voyage.

!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡

One group member sees a series of exclamation points mixed with the
capital letter A with a circumflex above.

Another group member sees what he said looked like Thai language.

2. I've been reading on the iPad and have bought several
books/downloaded them from the iBooks store.

HOWEVER, almost every time I tap the "Store" button in iBooks on the
iPad and search for a book I get almost all books in the German
language.

What is going on???

I can't find a setting anywhere that would impact this and have Yahoo
and Google and Apple KB searched to no avail.

Mercy!

What's going on?

You should be able to do a search for tech dictionaries like medical and engineering, download and install them for use with the Mac global dictionary app.

I posted a somewhat detailed message on this but it was well over a year ago â€" maybe two years ago.

Howdy

This is a test from iPad.

Apple Tech Support suggested trying the same "font" on both iPhone and iPad.

I was using the "Large" font on iPhone and the "Medium" font on iPad.

So now both devices are set to the Large font.

If my signature is anything other than alternating exclamation points, please message me.

Dictionaries for Mac OS X - Bill B

Posted by: "Denver Dan" denver.dan@verizon.net   denverdan22180

Mon Jun 18, 2012 2:52 pm (PDT)

Howdy.

Dictionaries are an odd and unfocused area and it's hard to find good
info on this topic.

The dictionary and thesaurus for Mac OS X are in XML format. This may
extend the number of dictionaries to download to add to the program.

Check out <http://code.google.com/p/mac-dictionary-kit/> Mac
Dictionary Kit.

Before trying it be sure to check for OS X version compatibility.

-SourceForge also had a dictionary project with a variety of tech
dictionaries but I think there was a problem with copywriter issues for
part of the project and it was deleted as a project.

-You might check Stardict-3.

I'm not sure I quite understand Stardict-3 and whether it's
dictionaries can be downloaded and used with the Mac OS X global
dictionary. I just ran across this project. But it seems to operate
under a "GNU GPU Code License."

-I think this Chinese-English translating dictionary might work with
the Dictionary app.

<http://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php?page=chinese_dictionary_mac_osx>

-Apple download Med dictionary (commercial).

<http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/medical-dictionary!/id520776316?mt=12>

-Check here for a bunch of translating dictionaries that I think work
with the Dictionary app:

<http://mac.gettranslateit.com/>

- SpeedofMac. This is a new one for me but apparently a bunch of
translating dictionaries:

Recently, I keep getting "This host does not exist" message on my MacBook Air. I use Safari. I tried emptying the cache and then the site will come up. I recently did the the new software and flash updates and wonder if that could have caused the problem. As you often suggest, I did the disc utilities but no improvement. Any help would be most welcome.

iPhone/iPad Photographs

Can someone please explain how to get my 1000+ photographs off my iPhone/iPad onto my computer to save? Also I would like to choose my favorites and put them back onto the iPhone/iPad in one fell swoop rather than email them to myself and download them one at a time.

I need to copy them to a folder on my computer away from my iPhone/iPad.

My storage and backup on the iPhone says I have 5.0 GB total storage and 4.4 GB available so I don't really understand it all. How much space is there on the iCloud?

When I try to backup it says Not Enough Storage. I hae not been able to backup since November of 2011!

Thank you for the time and help.

My crystal ball is a little foggy. Are you using OS X or Windows?

Get PhoneView from ecamm.com, if you use OS X. If you use Windows, they make a suggestion on their site.

1. Image Capture. No purchase, it's part of the OS on the Mac. Connect the iDevice to the computer, run Image capture, select the device on the left, select all the images, click on Import All, wait a while.

2. Select the images on the Mac that you want on the iDevice, put them in a folder, or a folder of several folders, connect the device, run iTunes, select the device on the left, select Photos on the right, click "Sync Photos from..." and select the relevant folder. Sync.

Have you considered backing up to the Mac?
