Lou, let me suggest an alternative to Spotlight, that can find anything and it's free, too. This little app is Easy Find.

John,

Easyfind is very nice and I may end up using that as my default search tool. It's very intuitive and seems to work well. Thanks.

I still want to know what's going on with Spotlight. I like using built in tools when I can, and often use 'Cmd + Spacebar' to launch programs and find files. Besides, I am trying to learn more about my Mac, figure out why things go haywire, and how to fix them.

I may still end up using Easyfind. I like it!

I've always had hassles with Spotlight as well. EasyFind is nice. HoudahSpot is also nice and is MUCH faster than EasyFind.
I barely bother with Spotlight at all. You CAN customize the searches, but it is so inconvenient that for me, it's much better just to go with the third-party alternative.

Thanks for the recommendation, Daly.

I rebuilt my Spotlight database and it didn't help. I was looking for a file nested about 6 folders deep in my home/library/application support/... folder. It is not a hidden file, but it just doesn't show up. Same with a lot of other files. I'm not sure why.

A 3rd party app is sounding better all the time!

Yes, I gave up on Spotlight when it was refusing to find a document that was smack in my Documents folder. I was sure I could fuss with it and eventually make it work, but why bother?

Hello Lou,

Spotlight is NOT meant to find everything. This has been discussed at length here on the list.

> I was looking for a file nested about 6 folders deep in my home/library/application support/... folder. It is not a hidden file, but it just doesn't show up.

Files in the Libraries are normally excluded from Spotlight searches –, for practical reasons. I say "normally" because there are exceptions. In OS 10.7.4 I can for example find webplugins in the Home Library using Spotlight although most other file types will not be found.

Since Tiger Spotlight has become better and better with every new release of the OS. I remember having had issues with Spotlight in Tiger which then disappeared when I updated to Snow Leopard. Now – in OS 10.7.4 – I find it reliable and extremely powerful after it has been correctly customized.

You can use BOOLEAN searches or narrow the search down to a single file type by using "kind:".

To find only Applications enter…
kind:application
kind:applications
kind:app

To find only Contacts enter…
kind:contact
kind:contacts

To find only Folders enter…
kind:folder
kind:folders

To find only E-Mail enter…
kind:emails
kind:mail message
kind:mail messages

To find only iCal events enter…
kind:event
kind:events

To find only iCal reminders enter…
kind:reminder
kind:reminders

To find only Images enter…
kind:image
kind:images

To find only Movies
kind:movie
kind:movies

To find only Music
kind:music

To find only Audio
kind:audio

To find only PDF
kind:pdf
kind:pdfs

To find only Preferences
kind:system preferences
kind:preferences

To find only Bookmarks
kind:bookmark
kind:bookmarks

To find only Fonts
kind:font
kind:fonts

To find only Presentations
kind:presentations
kind:presentation

I use this in combination with Keyboard Maestro. Here just one example: Typing "sff" in Finder will automatically activate the Spotlight drop down menu with "kind:folder " already entered in the field. Now I only have to write the name of the folder I'm looking for. This saves me a lot of time; and Spotlight will only show me *folders* that match, … no files, no contacts, no messages, etc.

Lou, if you need to search for invisible files or files in the Libraries then using EasyFind is probably your worst choice. It's only for people who have very little data or people who have unlimited amount of time and can afford to wait for the search results. EasyFind is extremely slow. Much better choices are

iFileX
http://www.osxbytes.com/page3/index.html

or

Find Any File
http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/

They are both very similar. iFileX is free.

Regarding speed:

I just searched for a file in my Home folder, nested 6 layers deep, on a 1TB hard disk with 560,31 GB on disk. It took EasyFind 1.41 min to find the file, whereas iFileX and Find Any File needed only 5 sec. respectively to find the file. That's a h u g e s difference.

I you need a more elaborated search tool I recommend

HoudahSpot
http://www.houdah.com/houdahSpot/

Or you can try
LaunchBar, Quicksilver, Alfred or Butler

which are all powerful launchers (similar to Spotlight), but with many interesting extras.

Anna,

Thank you for the very thorough response, which filled in some of the basic knowledge I was lacking. Very helpful! I have a lot to check out!

I'm still on Snow Leopard and am fairly frustrated with Spotlight. Far too often, it comes up blank and doesn't find what I am searching for.

I have some research to do and I'll report back when I sort out what I decide to use.

I appreciate the detailed response!

I found this very interesting and informative, but I also noted something rather odd about the Spotlight available list of searches. Isn't it odd that all iWork files are included in the search criteria except Pages. Why did Apple exclude pages!?!

FWIW there are other search apps that behave differently than Spotlight like Quicksilver or Butler. There are many, depending on your needs. I am happy with the way Spotlight functions as compared to all the alternatives. I have some but never use them

Spotlight's focus is speed and ease of use. It sacrifices comprehensiveness and user control. I think the trade-off is smart for most users, most of the time, especially since if you chose to ignore it, it is almost invisible. You CAN turn it off (essentially) but unless it's actually broken, I can't see any reason to do this.

Cheers,

I'm not quite sure what you mean. Look at this:

http://minus.com/mk9ni3dPt/

You first type Command + F in Finder.
Then choose "Document" as file type from the 'Kind' pop-down menu
Then you type "pa" into the "Search for" field (you can also type the full word 'page', but it's not necessary)

From the drop-down menu you choose "Kinds Pages Document"

And Spotlight will find all your Page documents.

Your search should look like this:

Just remember that these 2 folders here

http://minus.com/mzeWSrdVF/

plus the Library folder in your User folder (inclusive your "Favorites" folder !!!!)

are TABOO for Spotlight. Files and folders in the above mentioned folders will usually NOT be found by Spotlight. This is actually an advantage once you have understood the underlying reason. I'm not going into that now; maybe later if I have time.

Okay, using your original concept of using “ kind: “ which is related to the system preferences on spotlight. The list that the kind: searches on is in the preference "search results”. That list includes the iWorks files of Number and Presentations but not Pages.

What you describe above is a work around and not a direct locate for that type of file. My question is why would they do what they did for numbers and presentation and not pages.

Mail email folders

Posted by: "Mr X" x255075@gmail.com   x255075

Wed Jun 20, 2012 10:24 am (PDT)

Hi Guys:

I have a query.

I have several email accounts and they are all IMAP and they are all viewed (read) via Mail.

I am using MBP, about 3 years old, with Lion 10.7.4.

In my Mail, on the left sidebar, I have "Mailboxes" which are my email accounts (I guess).

Below that there is "On My Mac", and these I guess are the folders I have set up to move emails to when they are received for easier viewing. I usually save mail that I want to keep in these folders.

Now, below these two headings is name of each of my email accounts, with subheadings Junk, Sent, Trash, Archive. For gmail accounts, there are several more subheadings like All Mail, Bin, Draft, Spam, Starred, etc. I have a feeling that everything (all mail sent, received) is stored in this area; emails that I reply to comes back to me as email and stored in this area.

My question is, do I have double copies of everything? Can I safely delete most of the items under this last set of headings and still keep my mail that I have under the first two categories (Mailboxes and On My Mac).

I hope this makes sense.

OK, I looked everywhere but Safari. MY contact info is correct and has been but the auto fill does not fill in the state I live in on all forms that I have used.

Not that big a deal but it is a hassle to find Pennsylvania on a drop down list when the brains of the Web insist that Palau has top billing (How many people live in Palau?).

Wowza - http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/9To5Mac-MacAllDay/~3/cXbtQt-2a4E/

Sent to you by Bill Boulware via Google Reader: Retina MacBook Pros run
three external displays, refreshed Airs get dual external display
support via 9to5Mac by Jordan Kahn on 6/20/12

While Apple already recognized in its support documents for Thunderbolt
that the new Retina MacBook Pro supports up to three external displays
(as pictured above from Other World Computing̢۪s recent tests of the
setup), it has yet to confirm official support for the refreshed Ivy
Bridge MacBook Airs. Today we get word that the new MacBook Airs indeed
support two external Thunderbolt displays thanks to the recent “Mac OS
X Lion Update (Mid-2012 MacBook Air)” update that “improves external
display support”. Apple has not updated the device’s specs page to
reflect support for dual external Thunderbolt monitors.

The image above from OWC shows two iMacs running at 2560 x 1440 as
Thunderbolt displays and an LG monitor at 1920 x 1200 via HDMI. The
post noted “Moving images and media didn’t create any lag and we were
able to play video on all four displays simultaneously.” This makes the
new MacBooks the first to support up to four displays at their native
resolution.

Apologies if this has been discussed here already.

With Mountain Lion coming, some people may need to move to Lion sooner than later because their hardware may not run Mountain Lion. Considering the importance of iCloud this could be a BIG deal.

Example: If you go to buy Lion in the Mac App Store for incompatible hardware it will not let you.

After July 19th: If you go to buy Lion for compatible hardware **after** Mountain Lion ships, might they offer to install Lion instead?

As I understand it, if you can run 10.6.8, you can run 10.7 or 10.8.

Yes As long as the Mac can boot into 64 bit you will be able to go from Snow
Leopard and go into Mountain Lion but the other max out Ram if you can
Mountain Lion Like Ram.

I believe that if you plug in the iPhone, open iTunes, then click on the iPhone in the left sidebar, you're almost there.
With the iPhone highlighted in iTunes, go to the Photos tab. UNcheck "Sync Photos from ..." then click the Apply button in the lower right corner of the window.

You will get a warning. Let it delete the photos from the iPhone.

Do the same for the iPad.

I believe that next time it synchs with iCloud, there will be no photos to synch. I can't test it because I'm not synching photos on the cloud.

Howdy.

We are seeing reports of some kind of downtime for iCloud and Message.

I also heard that some of Apple's tech support computer systems were
running slow due to upgrades and changes being made.

Re: Is there any way to add words to Apple's Dictionary?

You mean adding words to either the "New Oxford American Dictionary" (which is the English dictionary in Dicionary.app) or to one of the several Dictionary-Plugins which extend Dicionary.app? There must be a way to do that, I just don't know how to do it. The plug-ins themselves do not provide any easy way to do so. Perhaps one has to hack the Dictionary.app, which is only a container provided by Apple because it can be "filled" with contents from plug-ins. These plug-ins reside in Library/Dictionaries as you already mentioned yourself.

I have 13 plug-ins installed. Here is a list:

1. BeoLingus Deutsch-Englisch.dictionary
2. dict.cc Deutsch-Englisch Dictionary.dictionary
3. Dictionnaire de l'Académie Française.dictionary
4. Holy Bible (American Standard).dictionary
5. Latin.dictionary
6. New Oxford American Dictionary.dictionary
7. OpenThesaurus Deutsch.dictionary
8. Oxford American Writer's Thesaurus.dictionary
9. Oxford Dictionary of English.dictionary
10. Oxford Thesaurus of English.dictionary
11. Shogakukan Daijisen.dictionary
12. Shogakukan Progressive English-Japanese Japanese-English Dictionary.dictionary
13. Shogakukan Ruigo Reikai Jiten.dictionary

I also recommend a very useful plugin called BetterDictionary; it's written by an Iranian developer from Teheran. With that plugin you can bookmark your searches. See this screenshot:

… which brings me to your statement

The word can be found in Apple's Dictionary, albeit only as a verb and a noun.

Urbandictionary.com is a good address when it comes to (American) slang. The contributors are ordinary (mostly young?) people, not language experts, so certain caution should be exercised.

I understand; it's exasperating.

It should be possible to get instructions from Apple about how to create a plugin. With that knowledge you might be able to add text to the plugins.

A number of such dictionaries are available as PDFs. If you need something in particular you can contact me off list.
