I need some help syncing Contacts between my Mac (OSX 10.6.8) , iPad and Google Mail.

Previously, I used Gmail (via browser access) for all my email and have maintained all my contacts within Gmail's contacts online. I haven't really used my Mac's built-in "Contacts" much and didn't sync it until recently. (I originally exported contacts from Gmail, then imported them into "Contacts".)

I bought an iPad last week and decided it was high time to sync my contacts so I have the same thing on Gmail, Mac Contacts and on my iPad. I'm using "Mail" a lot more now (and Mail and Gmail are properly connected, so emails show up in both places). I'm not sure how or if the sync process keeps things straight, but I now have a zillion duplicates in my Gmail Contacts online. Gmail has a "My Contacts" folder and an "Other Contacts" folder. Most of my contacts have been duplicated, but not all.

I need some help setting things up correctly so I don't keep chasing my tail. I'd like to clean up one of the three databases, get them all synced to match the corrected one, then have them all play nicely and stay synchronized. Ideally, I'd like all other players to take the cue from the database that has the most recent changes. For example, if I delete or modify a contact withing OSX Contacts, I'd like that to show up everywhere else. And if tomorrow I delete or add a contact on my iPad, I'd like the others to update themselves to reflect the new changes. Not sure if it can do this, but I'd like to get them all the same and stop creating dupes!! If I need to designate just one of the databases as the "master source", let me know.

Help appreciated. Thx.

OS X - open Address Book - Preference sand check Google Contacts and enter
full email and password

iPad/iOS - Add Exchange account with server m.google.com, full email as
user name and email address and password and turn on Contact and/or
Calendar syncing - turn off mail and use the Gmail labeled interface it is
much better on battery life unless you need invitation support for
calendars...

Thanks, Bill.

I followed your directions and think I did it properly.

I guess I need to sync manually using the "Sync icon" in my Mac's menu bar?

I assume I turn off iPad syncing in iTunes when connecting to my computer?

That's the way it is set up at the present time. For me, the confusion is that it's hard to tell who's doing what to whom?

Everything basically syncs with Google - you can force your Mac to sync but
it will do it automatically. If you are syncing iPad with iTunes then turn
it off or they will duplicate...

My wife and I have just returned from a vacation trip and have more than a thousand images stored on three camera memory cards. We both have the same problem, she on her MacBook Air and me on my iPad.

We cannot review in a full screen mode and selectively download only the pictures we want to save. Is there not a way to treat camera cards as external drives? Many of the pictures are not worth saving but this cannot be known until we see them full screen. It seems a big waste of time to have to transfer all the images and subsequently delete those we don't want.

I think it's much quicker to just upload the entire contents onto your hard drive in a new folder of your choice without looking at them. Once they're all uploaded, go through them and do all your sorting, culling and moving to different folders. Much easier. It's the way it should be done.

Howdy Fuss.

More than one way to do this.

Most digital cameras come with software that you can install on your
Mac which does just what you want.

For example, two programs came with my Nikon cameras. One lets fires
up when the camera with SD card is plugged into the Mac. This first
program lets me see the images on the larger screen and go through them
and tagging the ones I want to save/download to the Mac. Once I have
those tagged and selected I click the Transfer button in the first
Nikon application and this launches a 2nd Nikon application and the
selected pictures from the camera's SD card appear.

In this second application I have options for changing file names and
doing some other things. I have mine set to rename all the files with
the date first, an index number second, and a dash last, in the form
(using today's date as a sample):

2012-07-09-185-.jpg
2012-07-09-186-.jpg
2012-07-09-187-.jpg
2012-07-09-188-.jpg

The Nikon software adds the date format (year, month, day) and adds the
dashes. I then use a program that opens all of the images and lets me
add a description of my own after the last dash.

There are a number of programs that can few images on a camera's card
and to download or do other things to them.

The excellent shareware program GraphicConverter can see a digital
camera when connected. GraphicConverter also has pretty much the best
and most comprehensive batch file renaming capability I've ever
encountered. It's like Photoshop but with some extra features that
Photoshop doesn't have.

GraphicConverter's programmer/owner, Thorsten Lemke, is very available
and responsive and has a Yahoo Group for GraphicConverter users to ask
questions.

<gcmac@yahoogroups.com>

Apple's iPhoto can also talk to a digital camera. See iPhoto >
Preferences > General where you can instruct iPhoto and your Mac what
camera import program to use when the camera is connected. My iPhoto
is set to launch the Nikon Transfer program.

Using a USB cable, I just plug my camera directly into my Mac. It pops-up onto the Desktop just like an external HD.

There's a good chance that your Mac will just recognize it, but if it doesn't, your camera should have included a variety of drivers, one of which would be for your Mac. Also, this should be available on the camera manufacturer's website in support, or downloads.

Sure, you can treat them as external drives. You do not need any special software to view or copy the photos on an SD card. Pop them in and they will mount. The photos are in a folder a layer or two deep. You'll find them. You can view and copy using Preview and the Finder.

Do keep in mind, however, that the volume of photos on these cards is not as much as you think. The reason software exists is to make it easier to handle large volumes of photos expeditiously. Generally copying everything and sorting it out using good software (like iPhoto) is easier than doing the same tasks "manually."

It's up to you though.

I think several people have missed the point that this problem is common to the two new toys we have - an iPad and a MacBook AIR. I have no problem transferring pictures to my Mac, but I don't carry that with me when we travel.

A MB Air should treat this in the same way as your Mac. Are they running
the same OS? How are you accessing the cards: card-reader, SD slot, via the
camera? Something must be different!

1. I don't know of a way to do what you want on the iPad.

2. Are you connecting a cable from camera to Mac? My experience is with a separate card reader connected by USB (although an SD card stuck into an SD card slot on a Macbook or iMac would act the same).

With a card reader, the card is seen as a separate drive (perhaps also with cable connection -- I don't know).

In this situation, first open or create a folder on the hard drive for as a destination, then open a new Finder window, and on the left select the "drive" in question. Type <Command><1> (or choose "as Icons" from the View menu. You can use the slider on the bottom right to enlarge the image icons.

You should now be able to click on "good" shots and drag them to the destination folder, or <Command><click> to select multiple ones to copy over.

When you are SURE you are done, the best technique to make the camera cards fully available for new shooting is by re-formatting them IN the camera that is going to use them.

All that being said, what I *always* do is copy ALL the images from my camera cards to my computer, and edit and/or delete entirely on the computer.

I think every Macbook Air has at least 1 USB port, so most of the advice still applies.
What is your problem with the Air with the advice already given?

Call Comcast. Have them provide you the password. They can probably change it for you, or talk you through changing it if you like.

Otto, do you mean FTP among the computers on our local network? Or do you mean, can I ftp to other FTP servers out on the web? If the second, yes, it works. For instance, I have no trouble FTPing to my web host.

I tried FTP to my husband's Mac in the house using the local IP address of his iMac, and that did not work, if that is what you mean. It "could not connect," "connection refused."

I actually don't know how to FTP to a machine on the local network.

iPhoto originally used a normal folder system but since a few versions ago
iPhoto Library has been a "package". Unless you've moved it, it will be in
your Pictures folder. If you right-click > Show Package Contents, you can
see what's there.

When was you last backup and how did you do it?

Do a generalized search using the search bar in a finder window for:
"Kind is Image" and
"Last opened date is within last 6 months"

Can you see the photo in your library. If you can try exporting to your desktop. I have never had the email feature in iPhoto to work.

I use that feature all the time with no trouble. Select a photo and at the bottom left click share and then e mail - opens up mail and you need to decide on size of photo.
