A hands-on look at iOS 7 on the iPad

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 05:13 PM PDT

iOS 7 iPad Featured 01

iOS 7 beta 2 is the first iOS 7 to feature support for Apple’s iconic tablet, and we’ve got a hands-on demonstration of how it looks and feels. The first word that came to my mind when I initially fired up iOS 7 on the iPad was "modern." The iPad feels more spacious, and lightweight with iOS 7 installed. Whereas iOS 6 felt heavy and weighed down by skeuomorphism, iOS 7 feels light free.

I think you’re going to like the way that iOS 7 looks and performs on the iPad. Check out our full video demonstration inside…(...)

New poll finds most people prefer iOS 7 icons to those in iOS 6

ios 7 vs ios 6 icons

One of the best words I’ve heard used to describe the sweeping changes in iOS 7 is ‘polarizing.’ For the past two weeks, my Twitter timeline has been seemingly split between people who love the new UI and people who absolutely abhor it.

Most of the controversy seems to be focused around the new stock app icons, which have been completely redesigned. But for all of the grumbling I’ve heard about them, a new poll shows  most folks actually prefer the new icons to the old ones…(...)

iOS in-app purchase (teaser)

Apple began sending out emails to some iTunes users this weekend, informing them of how the approximately 23 million people that are a part of the in-app purchases class-action lawsuit can apply for compensation.

The settlement, which will cost Apple in excess of $100 million, stems from a class action lawsuit filed against Apple by parents who complained that it was far too easy for their children to make in-app purchases…(...)

age of empires

It appears that Microsoft is really warming up to the idea of launching apps on Apple’s mobile platform. Last week, it released Office Mobile for the iPhone, and today comes word that the Redmond company is looking to bring a number of games to the handset as well.

Reuters is reporting this afternoon that Microsoft is planning to port several of its Xbox and Windows games to the iPhone this year. It’s apparently contracted Japanese gaming firm KLab Inc. to handle the heavy lifting, and its first title will be Age of Empires…(...)

Siri new voice iOS 7 beta 2

Earlier today, Apple released the second beta of its next-generation mobile operating system, iOS 7, to developers. The update comes exactly two weeks after the original beta of iOS 7 was released, and brings with it a number of new features and improvements.

One of the more prominent changes we’ve seen has to do with Siri, Apple’s snarky digital assistant. Not only has it gotten smarter, but in beta 2 the virtual secretary received new voice templates. You can now choose from a male or female voice in several languages…(...)

stock voice memos app

A few moments ago, Apple released the second beta of its next-generation mobile operating system, iOS 7, to developers. The first beta, which was released two weeks ago today, featured a number of UI changes and new features. And today’s update adds to that.

One of the bigger changes we’ve noticed in beta 2 is that Apple has re-added the stock Voice Memos app. The utility was missing from the original iOS 7 release, leaving some folks to speculate that Apple was getting rid of it all together. But that’s not the case…(...)

iOS 7 beta 2 is out: brings iPad support and other features

iOS 7 beta 2 update

Apple has seeded the second beta of iOS 7 to developers this morning. The update comes exactly two weeks after the initial version of the new firmware was released, following the company’s annual WWDC keynote.

The change log hasn’t been released yet, but the consensus seems to be that this update is likely more about speed and performance improvements than about adding major new features or making significant changes…(...)

iOS 7 (iPhone 5, flat, white, homescreen)

It’s been two weeks since Apple released the first beta of iOS 7 to its registered developers. A lot has been written about it and way more ink will be spent as subsequent betas get released and thoroughly tested before iOS 7 is eventually ready for prime time this Fall. If iDB is part of your daily routine, you should be among the first to know when a new beta hits Apple’s servers. Also, count on our resident team to take a closer look at the new beta and report back about everything there is to know about  feature changes.

Additional iPhone 5S spyshots suggest all-new A7 chip

iPhone 5S vs iPhone 5 (MacRumors 001)

MacRumors last week shared a genuinely-looking photograph believed to picture the back of the iPhone 5S. Virtually identical to the current iPhone 5, the image did tell us that Apple’s upcoming S-upgrade will sport dual-LED flash for better low-light photos, especially coupled with a rumored twelve-megapixel camera. Today, the publication posted a new high-resolution photo suggesting that the upcoming iPhone revision could run a brand new A7 chip rather than a variant of the existing A6 silicon powering Apple’s latest-generation iPhone and iPad…(...)

Imgur coming to iOS soon, hits Android

ImGur (teaser 001)

When Alan Schaaf's free image sharing service dubbed Imgur went online on February 23, 2009, it was met with genuinely positive feedback from users who’d been longing for an image hosting service that didn’t suck.

Though no one expected the San Francisco-based startup to compete with the likes of Flickr, Instagram or other established photo sharing services, it did start picking up considerable steam after users on Reddit and Digg began sharing viral images on Imgur. In response to its rising popularity, the startup has just issued the official Android client and confirmed that iOS version is coming along soon…(...)

Gartner: tablet shipments to jump 68% in 2013 amid PC slump

Research giant Gartner Monday released new figures confirming the growth of tablets and the decline of PCs are set to continue through 2013 and into 2014. However, the numbers point to a changing market for tablets and a potential rescue for ailing PC and laptop demand.

While the overall shipment of PCs, mobile phones and tablets is expected to rise by just 5.9 percent this year, PC shipments of both desktops and notebooks will slide lower by more than ten percent. Worldwide mobile phone shipments should increase a modest 4.3 percent while tablets lead consumer demand for mobility, shipments jumping by 67.9 percent this year, according to the research firm…(...)

Apple reportedly contracts out next-gen mobile chip manufacture to TSMC

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 06:42 AM PDT

TSMC logo (medium)

After a long period of rumor mongering, it would seem that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s largest independent semiconductor foundry, is finally stealing Apple chip biz from rival Samsung. If a new report out of Taiwan is to be trusted, Apple has cut a long-term deal with TSMC to produce A-series chips for future iPhones, iPods and iPads built on TSMC’s 20-nanometer, 16-nanometer and 10-nanometer process technology.

If true, it’s the final nail in the coffin in the strained Apple-Samsung technology relationship. And good riddance, too, because Samsung will no longer be able to have a headstart of Apple’s future semiconductor solutions…(...)

Baldur’s Gate yanked from the App Store

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 06:01 AM PDT

Baldurs Gate (teaser 001)

Developer Beamdog did a nice job updating Baldur’s Gate, BioWare’s classic role-playing game set in the Dungeons & Dragons universe, for the Apple platform. Last December, they released Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition on the App Store.

The RPG title contains the original Baldur's Gate, the Tales From the Sword Coast expansion pack, an additional monk character, a new ‘Black Pits’ adventure and lost more content.

If you’re a fan of the series which has a loyal following, there’ll be lots of teeth-gnashing involved in finding that Baldur’s Gate games have been pulled from the App Store due to unspecified contractual issues…(...)

Accessory vendor bypasses iOS 7 Lightning check

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 04:56 AM PDT

iOS 7 (Unauthorized Lightning cable prompt)

One of the little-known features of iOS 7 that not many people will like is its background check of whether or not a third-party accessory is hooked up to the your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad using a non-certified Lightning cable.

We’ve know Apple has tightened its MFi program rules (MFi stands for ‘Made for iDevice’) and iOS 7 seems to be stepping up a cat and mouse game between Apple and non-MFi vendors….(...)

Siri in iOS 7 getting better at pronouncing names

Posted: 24 Jun 2013 04:15 AM PDT

iPhone 4S advert (Siri 001)

Not only is Siri getting a facelift and new features in iOS 7 as Apple continues to focus on improving her usability and the accuracy and reliability of the responses, she’s also getting smarter thanks to backend changes which don’t require a software update. For example, one of such server-side improvements is the ability to place phone calls to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline to help save lives.

But there’s one aspect of Siri that has seen little changes since her inception: inaccurate pronunciation of certain names. But no more. Although not specifically addressed during the WWDC 2013 keynote, it’s been discovered that Siri can now initiate a learning process of sorts whenever it has trouble understanding your pronunciation of a person’s name…(...)

According to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, Facebook has been quietly working on a new service for the past year that displays content from users and publishers in a format, tailored for mobile devices, similar to Flipboard.

We’ve seen a number of new products this year from Zuckerberg’s team, as the company continues to try and evolve from being ‘just a social networking service.’ There was the search graph, then Facebook Home, and now there’s Reader…(...)
