Hi Hal,
Yes. I use the external for a lot of things where I don't want to fill up the internal drive. And I seem to be on the external drive most of the time.

Thanks, I should have explained that.

Why not have the one Mail on the external drive only? Still don't understand why 2 mails. Asking for trouble...

I wonder, do you keep 2 parallel sets of backups?

I have a Macbook Pro, running OSX 10.8.4. Due to some consolidation of
several older machines, it has accumulated probably multiple thousands of
duplicate files.

I learned from this forum that "MacKeeper" is considered dangerous, so I
don't want to use that.

What I'd like is a program that can create for me a file of all the
duplicate
filenames on the disk, so I can then manually inspect and edit the
file into a drop list, which I can ultimately run as a command file
using Unix (Terminal). I want the safety of the extra human analysis
before actually removing anything that the program identifies as duplicate.
Also, where there are multiple directories with duplicate contents, I
can manually "rmdir" those to save time.

I guess I could write such a little program in C or C++, but if there is
something out there I'd rather not have to bother writing and
debugging yet another utility program.

Can any of our experts here recommend such a program? It doesn't
have to be free but should be < $100.

Thanks in advance!

Bill

Howdy.

I've been trying several duplicate file finding programs.

Now using Araxis Find Duplicate Files.

It seems to do a rather thorough job. It has several options for
displaying the found duplicate files and several options to delete them
including a preview window that shows thumbnails of the files and which
highlights the duplicate files to be deleted which are next to the
original files so you can confirm them easily.

The program doesn't just scan for identical file names but also matches
exact size of files.

The web site says this:

• Fast and robust identification of files with duplicate content
• Scan multiple folders in one go
• Optionally restrict scanning to particular file types (e.g. .wav,
mp3, etc.)
• Works with network shares, as well as internal and external disk
volumes
• Straightforward and flexible results display: 'All scanned items',
'All occurrences of items with duplicates', 'The first occurrence of
each duplicated item', 'The other occurrences of each duplicated item
', 'Items without duplicates'
• Built-in preview of selected items and their duplicates
• Quick Look support
• Send selected duplicates to Trash, or move them to another location
preserving their folder hierarchy
• Last resort 'Put Back' capability for moved items
• OS X Lion/Mountain Lion fullscreen mode support
• OS X Lion/Mountain Lion resume (when enabled on the OS X system
preferences General tab)
• Save scan results to a text file
• Process found items with an external application
• Retina display support
• Comprehensive online help

The only problem I have with it is that it automatically detects the
invisible ds.store file in each folder and lists them as duplicates and
these have to be manually deselected in order to not delete them. The
ds.store invisible file in each folder is what keeps folder settings,
size, position, View, etc.

This program is on the Mac App store.

I have a new iPhone5, iPad3 and my Mac 10.6.8. I wanted to put my contacts and calendar on all three. However, I just read that I would need 10.7.4 to do that. I don't want to upgrade now and I'm waiting for Mavericks to get a new 27" iMac.

How do I get my contacts and calendar on my iPhone? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You sync them using iTunes, just as you do for music, podcasts, etc.

I using 10.6.8 too, and it works fine. You need Lion or later to sync through the Cloud, but syncing through iTunes, connected by cable to the computer, works fine.

Select your iPhone or iPod Touch in the device list, either on the side bar, if it is showing (I prefer that to the new in 11 way) or up at the top and in the nfotab in that window tell it what you want to sync.

You do realise you can make iTunes 11 look much more like 10 by enabling

Yes, which is why I said I prefer it that way. Maybe I was unclear. That is how I run it.

Oh, I see. :)

Perhaps this will cause others to look at the View options, though?

I hope. There are many things I do not much like about iTunes 11, but at least we can get one of the better things back with the View options.

Howdy.

i can't get the bookmark in a book I'm reading in iBooks to sync from
either iPad/iBooks to iPhone or from iPhone/iBooks to iPad.

This is supposed to be easy but nothing I've tried works.

Apparently this is a very common problem.

iBooks books should sync both the current bookmark you set for a page
and should also sync the last read page when you quit the app.

It doesn't.

I've searched a variety of sources on this and non make any sense such
as checking that the same Apple ID is used on both iBooks for iPad and
iBooks for iPhone.

Of course I've turned the bookmark sync off in Settings/iBooks on both
iPad and iPhone and then back on with zero success.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried turning the iBooks app off on all the devices & then turning them on individually to test each? Mine has always "just worked".

Sent from my iPad...br>
