Contra: Evolution now available in the App Store

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 05:58 PM PDT

contra

Gamers looking to drum up a bit of nostalgia this evening will be happy to hear that the official Contra game is now available in the App Store. The title actually first surfaced in the US App Store at the end of last month, but it was mysteriously and promptly pulled.

Apparently that May release was unintentional, as Konami and Punchbox Studios still had some finishing touches to put on the game. But it’s back in the App Store today, for good this time, meaning you can now grab Contra: Evolution for both your iPhone and your iPad…(...)

is 7 head nove

This is kind of interesting. Hot on the heels of yesterday’s report that iOS 7 includes the ability to detect smiling and blinking faces, comes word of another odd new feature onboard: the ability to control your iPhone or iPad with head movements.

That’s right, tucked away in the Accessibility section of the Settings app in the latest beta of Apple’s new OS is a toggle that activates a new head tracking feature. Once enabled, users can control their iOS devices with simple left to right head nods…(...)

Plants vss Zombies 2 (teaser 001)

Bad news this afternoon for Plants vs. Zombies fans. Electronic Arts has announced today that the highly anticipated sequel to PopCap’s popular lane defense game will not launch next month as it had originally anticipated.

A few weeks ago, PopCap announced that the game, officially titled ‘Plants vs. Zombies 2: It’s About Time,’ would be released on July 18. But it appears EA—its parent company—thinks it needs more time to fine tune things…(...)

Apple applauds Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 12:25 PM PDT

Normally, the words ‘Apple applauds’ and ‘Supreme Court’ don’t go together. The Cupertino company isn’t on the greatest terms with the US government at the moment, what with the whole tax evasion thing and the ongoing e-book trial.

But today is a different story. In a pair of 5-4 decisions this morning, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex couples in two major cases, effectively allowing federal benefits for gay couples. And Apple says it applauds the ruling…(...)

Poppy turns your iPhone into Viewmaster style 3D camera

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 11:21 AM PDT

Poppy (teaser 003)

An interesting project is brewing up over at Kickstarter. An iPhone accessory called the Poppy wants to turn any iPhone into a kid’s 3D camera capable of capturing, viewing and sharing 3D stereoscopic stills and videos. It has two eyepieces to look through, a slot where you insert your device and mirrors which capture two stereographic images using your iPhone’s single camera.

Perhaps most surprising fact is that Poppy needs no electronics to turn 2D images into 3D because its mirrors do all the heavy lifting, resulting in a light accessory that needs no batteries to operate…(...)

Malware infestation running amok on Android

Android Sucks

It’s not the sort of recognition any smartphone maker wants, but Android appears to be the platform of choice for nine out of ten mobile malware authors. The growth of malware apps targeting users of Google’s mobile operating system rose an unbeliavable 614 percent in just the last year, author’s of a new study found.

Perhaps even more discouraging is three-quarters of the mobile malware could easily be eliminated through software updates, yet ignored by 96 percent of Android owners. As for Apple’s iOS, it’s nowhere to be found on the malware hit-list, an area in which Apple is happy to hand to rivals…(...)

Developed by Danish team Playdead, Limbo, the popular puzzle action adventure, became a smash hit shortly following its Xbox Live launch in 2010. Soon after, the game was ported to Windows and Mac PCs and Sony’s PlayStation 3 console, winning numerous accolades and garnering over a hundred awards.

Google more valuable than Apple – if you exclude cash

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 07:26 AM PDT

apple money

For years, the media has been keen to compare companies based on their market capitalization. The metric itself is pretty fluke, but it makes for nice headlines – especially if the topic of reporting is Apple. Earlier this year, for example, much noise was made about Apple passing the oil giant ExxonMobil to become the world’s most valuable corporation by market capitalization.

Having said that, it really shouldn’t be surprising big media is now reporting that the Internet giant Google recently “passed” Apple to become the world’s most valuable technology corporation. The bold claim comes with a caveat: you have to stretch your definition of market cap and strip out some key metrics…(...)

India overtakes Japan as third biggest smartphone market

Posted: 26 Jun 2013 05:48 AM PDT

Apple-Retail-India

For years, the big three smartphone markets have been China, the U.S. and Japan. India now has knocked Japan out of the third spot due in part to better distribution and increased attention from Apple and Samsung, a research firm said Wednesday.

India has recently been in the spotlight as the two smartphone giants battle over the nation’s growing interest in adopting the more powerful mobile phones. As a result, consumers are bombarded with an array of buying options, perhaps explaining why Strategy Analytics is reporting 163 percent smartphone growth in India, four times the global average…(...)

AT&T rolls out and expands LTE in several markets

AT&T Flaship Chicago Store

In a recent study by PC Mag, AT&T’s LTE network was found to be the fastest among the top 4 carriers. But Verizon was found to be the most reliable. That’s because Big Red has 4G coverage in nearly 200 more markets than AT&T does.

But it’s working hard to change that. This morning, the nation’s second largest wireless provider posted a number of press releases announcing that it has rolled out LTE to new markets, and expanded coverage in several existing markets…(...)
