I have a lot of hoots on iPhoto and am using a WD external hard drive made for an iMac (I have the 27" bought in January, I think still latest model of desktop).
Anyway, I had a Book drive on my old, now dead, PC, and I have not been able to get the photos off it. Even the Staples techs tried. They said that instead of just letting the photos back up on the drive, I should drag and drop. They said the problem with the Book drive is its encryption. S basically useless to me :(
So my question is, on the iMac, do I open the WD icon and drag the iPhoto icon onto it? And then how do I update pics periodically as I add new ones?
Thanks,
Carol

How can it be useless if you are still using it as a backup? Maybe you are just hoping it backs up, and it isn't. If the drive data is encrypted how can you read it?
If it's encrypted how do you drag and drop anything from it?

On your iMac, go to System Prefs/Time Machine/Turn ON/Add (+) the WD HD as the back up drive. Close System Prefs.

Unless you can drag the old iPhoto Database file (User/Pictures/iPhoto Library) from your old encrypted drive, just start using iPhoto on your iMac. Your new library will begin when you start up iPhoto. Sorry but all your old images are lost unless you can find someone to open the old "Book" drive and find the "iPhoto Library" file.

Microsoft has released Office for iPhone.

I'm not sure of the exact name.

Mixed reviews. One reviewer said editing an Excel spreadsheet was a painful experience.

Only for iPhone and not for iPad following Micro$loth's usual inverted logic. .

Any one going to try it?

From what I can tell it is "CloudOn" a free download with in app purchases
of Word, Excel, etc ..

There is also
Office Mobile for Office 365 (cloud based office"

It should be noticed that Pages, Numbers, and Keynote will also have cloud
versions with Mavericks..

My understanding is that you are required to be a subscriber to MS $100 per year cloud service to use the app. If so, that let's me out.

I am not a subscriber. I downloaded cloudon and entered my google info as where to save the files and have the option of word excel or PowerPoint at (so far) no cost.

If I were in charge if this program, my next evil step would be to change the file format of these CloudOn apps so as to disallow backward compatibility with old versions.

Once I was seeing nice large numbers of converts to the free new services I would announce the price increase(s).

Voilà! A Microsoft business plan.

The Apple email tech had the solution. I have to call up that email account via Safari and then re-enter the PW. Apparently it is a fluke with Yahoo that Yahoo is working to solve. It affects email addresses randomly on Macs and PCs. So now, at least, I know how to fix it when it happens and that a permanent fixes on the way.

It has to be your Mac setting issue

I don't normally go to Briebart (gag), but I did today.
Immediately I am blasted w auto starting videos.
I installed ClicktoFlash and restarted.
The uninvited videos are blocked now.

But the problem is that I have to uninstall the
extension if I want to view videos on some sites.
Simply clicking the videos does not override the
blocking extension like on most sites.

Is there a Safari Extension that will actually work
with all video sites? View videos when I want and
not when I don't.

ClickToPlugin is the replacement for CTF. Try it & see if it solves your issues. I thought it has a "white list" to allow web pages/sites? Maybe I'm not remembering...

Thanks Dave, but it didn't work. Downloaded & installed CTF. Drug ClicktoFlash to trash and restarted iMac. The videos played automatically in Safari 6.0.5+ML10.8.4. So trashed CTF and reinstalled ClicktoFlash.

The videos that I want to play have HTML5 icons on them. I don't understand the difference. Maybe I want Flash videos blocked, but HTML5 videos to play, whatever HTML5 videos are.

Presume you mean "CTP" (ClickToPlugin), not "CTF".

Did you check CTP settings? Maybe "play" is the default?

Seems that these videos are not Flash but use the HTML5 player (less nasty than Flash but all videos require system resources). CTP should let you turn off playing of all vids...

I'm planning on dropping my landlines and using my iPhone 5 exclusively. I know nothing about battery packs, but I like the idea of having a charged battery pack in case of a power outage. We have at times had power outages lasting from hours to days. I was reading about the New Trent: iCarrier IMP120D. Would that be a good choice or are there better options.

All,

I have a G4 Mac Mini and a late 2006 MacBook Pro, neither of which can be
updated to Mountain Lion let alone Maverick. I use my iPad more than either
of the other ones but there are several things I still need the full OS X
operating systems to do. I am going to buy a new Mac Mini but don't want to
do so this month if a new model is pending. I have been on MacRumors and
looked at the refresh dates but this doesn't really tell me anything.

What are your opinions on whether or not there will be a Mac Mini refresh
this year?

Thanks!

I have a friend who has problems typing on a keyboard and is interested in a program that will convert speech to text. Dragon Express appears to be suitable, but a number have said last year the program works in 10.7 but not 10.8 even though it is listed at the app store as 10.7 or later. Any experience? The program costs $50.
