I'm planning on buying the 27" iMac when it is shipped with Maverick. Am I
missing something here?
I understand that I will need to replace Word.

What version of Office are you running now, and what OS? As I understand it, Office 2008 and later will work, but earlier versions need Rosetta to run, so they cannot go with 10.7 or later.

I'm running OS X 10.6.8
My Word is Word for Mac X [service release 1] - old as dirt.
I will need new version of Word for Mavericks - correct?

Actually, you would need the new version even for Lion. I believe that '08 will work, so maybe you can find a used version of that on eBay. I hope someone here can correct me. I too am still on 10.6.8, but am running Micro$oft Orifice 2011.

Howdy.
I'm not sure if Word 2008 will run on a new Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks
computer AND system that hasn't been released yet.
I think Word 2008 may still be available at Amazon.com.
Word 2008, in the inscrutable and mysterious way of Micro$loth had the
macro feature completely removed. So, if you need macros don't buy
Word 2008. Macros were returned in Word 2011 version.

Correct, it will not run. Any application that is PowerPC only, so without native intel support, will not run on OSX 10.7 or newer. 10.6 is the last release to include the rosetta framework that allows power pc applications to run on intel machines.
Is this your only power pc application ? I suggest before updating going through your current system and do an audit to figure out which are powerpc only applications, and thus will not work on a new system. That way you won't have any nasty surprises later on... There are hundreds of articles on the web on how to do this, if you are not sure. For example,

Dolores,
You may not need to buy a new iMac, but most of us can not tell without more information.
What model of the 27" iMac are you using? What OS X are you running on it? I seem to remember 10.6.8, but if that is so it may be able to run Maverick, 10.9. What version of Office and/or Word are you running?
The information you have given below, is like saying "I have a full-sized pickup, with this shell fit it?" Without knowing if it is a long bed or short bed, side-step bed or not, brand, model and year, there is no way of knowing.

So you did give us some of the answers, in bits and pieces. That is what I get for reading chronologically.
I still don't know which model iMac you are using? Mavericks according to osxdaily will run on an iMac (Mid-2007 or later) and must have a 64-bit Intel CPU and an advanced GPU.
Of course the older it is, the more likely it will not run on the next version of OS X.
And please do follow Chris Jones' suggestion and check to see which PPC apps you need to replace __before__ you move to Mavericks. I moved to Office 11 when an employer picked up the bill. That includes checking the supporting software for you hardware accessories, like your printer and scanner.
Also check to see what ports will not be available on the new iMac, so you know what adapters you may need to buy to support your other accessories like external hard drives. Some of those Thunder adapters seem to be expensive.

iMac 10.6.8
I did a USB hookup from my phone to the computer and transferred my address book contacts. I transferred many more contacts than I want on the phone. I could delete the ones I don't want on the phone, but the next time I sync, I think they will be back. Do I set up a separate address book group for numbers I want on the phone and only sync that group?

Same thing happened to me when I moved from Eudora to Mail. Since Mail uses the MacOS address book (or contacts, depending on OS version), it transferred over all the Eudora addresses which were simply Email addresses, something I did not want. I made a "group" called "for phone" or something such as that, and told iTunes to sync only that group with the phone. (Actually, for full disclosure, in my case not a phone but an iPod Touch, but the same idea).

Why does it matter? Does it take up too much room?
Or does it make hard to find the ones you always call? Have you tried Favorites if that is the issue. Or I think you can turn off some of the groups.
Tell us why you want to do this and we might come up with a better way to do it.
