Howdy.
Since getting an iPad I've been checking out ePub and reading
applications.
The Macintosh App Store lists 23 ePub apps.
Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks should brink the iBooks Apple reading app to
the desktop.
I'm not sure is Google Play Books app is available for Mac OS X or only
for iOS and Android.
Confusingly Blackberry seems to have some app called Playbooks that may
or may not be viable on a Blackberry and may or may not be coming to
Android and iOS. Blackberry is being, as usual, confused and late on
the issue.
As part of all this look at a Macintosh application named Calibre.
It's for converting various digital book formats that are not DRM
protected.
Check out OverDrive Media Console. OverDrive has apps for Mac OS X and
for iOS. OverDrive is a front end for ePubs and for digital book
collections at many public libraries. You install OverDrive will let
you check for ePub digital books at many libraries. When you check out
the first one you are asked to create a free ePub account at Adobe with
a User Name and a Password. You can then check out/download the book
and read it in OverDrive or it can also be done for Kindle application
or iOS app. So you need a library card/account and user name and
password for your library and then you need to do the free Adobe ePub
account.
You should be able to find Kindle for Mac OS X and for iOS. Also Nook
from Barnes & Noble.
I've been trying Apple's iBooks, Amazon's Kindle, Barnes & Nobel's
Nook, Google's PlayBooks, Apple's iTunes U, and Apple's PodCasts app on
my iPad and iPhone.
I've done full book reads with all except Google's Play Books.
For iOS, IMO, after trying them, I like Apple's iBooks the best. The
text crispness. leading, letter spacing and quality appearance on
screen is superior. The ability to buy/download a digital book from
iBooks is a very nice touch that is not available in most other readers
where you have to launch a browser to buy the digital book. I like the
iBooks dictionary and notes and highlighting abilities.
2nd is Amazon's Kindle app which I've only tried on iPad. It's not bad
at all and very usable.
3rd is Barnes & Nobles Nook reader app on iPad. It's OK but not as
polished as iBooks, not as convenient, text quality on screen is just
not as good.
OverDrive, which I've only tried on iPad and not on Macintosh, is OK
but the touch interface is somewhat unusual. I had to do an internet
search to figure out how to bring up the text/settings/chapters/ and
other info links in the reading screen. Touch the center of the page
where all the other readers use a touch to top or bottom edge.
Take a look at iTunes U which has a lot of free manuals, learning
books, and more for all kinds of things like how to use a digital
camera to much more. Available for iOS and Macintosh.
And check into the now separate Apple application for iOS called
PodCasts. This ability used to be part of iTunes program but I find it
a lot more convenient for use as a separate app for iOS. I've been
listening to a GREAT 135 episode plus audio history of Rome in PodCasts
done by a guy named Mike Duncan. Recommended!
Hope some of this "book" length reply helps!

I love these. For my Window and Desktop I got the Matias Dual labelled
one which I love.
For my Galaxy Note II I amusing the Hackker keyboard for Dvorak or SwiftKeys.
For my Nexus 10 I don't like the Hacker's keyboard so I will be
researching Dvorak 3rd party keyboards that they think work well with
a 10" Tablet? I will be asking at my fave Android support group for
ideas.
Thanks again for telling me about the key covers they are great for the commute.

Can anyone recommend a free and reliable utility to clone my MacBook Pro hard drive?
I use Time Machine to back up my hard drive but I also want to make a full clone of my drive to keep in a second location.
I have used Carbon Copy Cloner before but the free trial expired. I am debating whether to pay for that program.
I would appreciate people's thoughts on the issue.
Thanks.

Several list members also recommend Super Duper.

IMHO, it is worth the money. I got it years ago when it was free or donation-ware. I very gladly paid the price. I understand now that it is $50 or so, though, and SuperDuper is still $30. I have very little experience (close to none) with the latter, since at that time one had to pay for it and CCC was free. I've heard great stuff about it though.

Apart from using rsync in Terminal, the only free option is Disk Utility >
Restore. This, however, can only do complete clones, i.e., there is no
incremental option.
I have used CCC for many years now and have no plans to change.

SuperDuper has been bulletproof for me, for years. And yes, you can use Restore for free, but won't get the "smart updates" and the scheduling, and so on.

I have no experience with apps that will change the size of partitions, but I understand they exist.
There is no need to defrag a Mac OS X partition, the underlying Unix will take care of that by itself.

To change the partition size in bootcamp, take a look at the following article.

Yes and no.
The OS does file defragmentation. Sometimes *free space* defragmentation is helpful.
> 2. Most of wy wasted space is a BootCamp partition that is TOO BIG. Is there an easy way to size it down and give bakc spack to Mac OSX?
There's iPartition.
I'm not sure it is entirely safe to use with BootCamp.
You could ask Coriolis.

The video below provides a look at what to me may be a dazzling 3D screen view for the coming iOS update. The white icon text, which has given me pause, may be clearly viewable if the effect is turned on. If the effect is turned off, I still see problems w the coming white icon text. Or maybe it's a none issue, TBD.

A PC user gave me a thumb drive with music files whose filenames end in .wma
I tried QuickTimePlayer and then downloaded Flip Player, but both have the same problem.
A box with arrows and numbers appears. When I press Play, the numbers go up and down as if the music is playing, but there is no sound. The volume is up on both apps and on my Mac, and I checked sound in Preferences. Other sound sources (Youtube videos, etc.) play just fine.
(1) What, if anything, can I do to hear these files?
(2) If I have to ask the PC user to give me the files in another format, what should he use?

Try VLC, but get the latest version.
EasyWMA will convert them to mp3 if you want.
But it all depends upon whether the files are corrupt
or not to begin with.
